I've thought about doing a variation where the board rotates 90° every 5 turns, but the pawns' directionality doesn't (so basically A-H and 1-8 stay the same) I'd call it Gravity Chess 😁

I played this and it is actually a fun alternative to normal chess, the difference is that when I play, I remove the rook pawns

Personally if vertical chess is a thing the pawns would have to be slightly altered in that White pawns can only move Right and Black pawns can only move left. Vertical up and down for attacking.

And now the chess board can be rotated by 180 degrees, that means the black pieces are starting from the first two ranks and white’s pieces start from the 7th and 8th rank
