Yesterday, Verizon announced a new 5G gateway unit with some great features including better upload speed, better Wi-Fi coverage, and an onboard signal strength meter. They are shipping NOW!

    I signed up last week. I got the white box. I cancelled and re signed up to take advantage of the xbox series x promotion. They had me send the white box back and sent me the grey unit. I cant imagine anything changed in those two days and it seems particularly random on which one gets sent out.

    There are no ports for external antennas. We'll have to wait for companies like Waveform to see if there is a way to hack on external antennas like they did for the ARC model: www.waveform.com/a/b/guides/hotspots/verizon-arc-xci55ax

    any idea how to do IP passthrough on the new device? I just got it yesterday and now my HUE bridge and nest router will not take...I have tried a multitude of things and tried to reference your last video, but dont have a pc with ethernet ports and my settings look different. Please advise if you have any feedback on how to get bridges to work again! thank you.

    Hi Disable. Verizon salespeople knocked on my door 25 minutes ago. They said the new hardware just became available TODAY. They were very excited to announce that, as apparently they too have been eagerly awaiting the announcement from Verizon mothership. We are lucky to have a Verizon cell tower TWO blocks from our home, so signal strength should not be an issue. Have not decided yet wether to pull the plug on Xfinity, but on the surface this does sound like a better deal, and a better overall concept for service provider from a technical point of view (as you have observed previously - no physical copper cable.) We want to keep Xfinity TV service, so not sure how the overall $$$ will wash out. Will keep you updated. Thanks for sharing your own experience!

    Great video. 5G will get better for all providers now that the FCC gave them the green light to use the new bands - verizon 5G around here has already been steadily improving since the FCC said go. About signal strength, the outside bars are good but as a first cut. The new firmware gives the db of the 4G signal and 5G signal and assists in fine tuning it, but you do have to log into the cube to see it. My 4G is nominally around -92db and 5G is around -110db, not great but well within the usable range.

    I can confirm that they are still shipping the ASK-1338. I have used that router for almost a year now. Mine started to get flaky the last few weeks. I contacted Verizon and they shipped out the same model. They wouldn't this new unit to me. It really doesn't matter though. They both do the same thing.

    What firmware version is your unit at? A lot of people are saying the latest firmware updated hosed things for them. - Brian

    @@disablemycable Mine is at 222656. The signal from the tower to the router was fine. It was the signal to my devices that was the issue. Sometimes the signal would be strong. Other times it was very weak. Playing with the wifi settings did nothing to improve the problem. I just received the new router today. I'll see what the firmware is on this new unit. I'll report back later.

    Hi. I’m in New York. I have been a Verizon customer for years. I just signed up for Verizon home internet plus and I received the old unit. How do I get the new one?

    You can try going to your local Verizon store to see if they can swap it out. No guarantees though. Some folks have been able to get their units exchanged, some not. - Brian

    Check out page 105 of the new gateway's manual: www.verizon.com/support/pdf/user_guide/Verizon-Internet-Gateway-WNC-CR200A-User-Manual-v1.pdf It does mention passthrough mode. Of course, I don't know anyone who has to the new unit yet so it hasn't been verified. - Brian

    Yea i just did the same thing. Apparently i cant exchange for a newer router without starting new service… and they really cap the speed with the new plans. The speedtest was eager to jump into the 3-400mbps but its capped at 100mbps per the signed up plan

    Was going to try and order with a new line but Verizon is saying 5G Home internet is not available in my area now yet I have it here and working. What's the deal with this?

    Verizon said they would cap the number of users in a given region when enough people sign up to avoid saturating their bandwidth. Perhaps that's what happened? - Brian

    Hello. Above, you asked how I like the service and gateway. Well here are my initial thoughts. I have had Spectrum cable internet with supposedly GB service (never even close) for several months now. Not happy with the speeds and lagging so I looked for a different solution. Enter Verizon 5G internet. Today I received the new Verizon 5G Gateway and set it up. I tested the speed of my desktop on WIFI with the existing Spectrum service against the new Verizon 5G service. There was no comparison. I ran speed tests on both services and here are the results: Spectrum Cable Internet = 38Mbps Verizon 5G Internet = 62 Mbps

    As you mentioned, Verizon likely has a good many old cubes still in inventory, so signing up for another account may in fact lead to the same exact box being sent to your house. It might be better to wait a few months before deploying such a tactic.

    Pretty sure this unit is only c-band. No mmwave support.

    Thanks, you might be right. The announcement said "the Verizon Receiver - which launched last year - is now available across the entire Verizon Home Internet footprint", and the "Verizon receiver" supports mm wave, so I took that to mean this unit would also. Now I'm thinking that might not be correct. Thanks. - Brian

    In the video it’s specifies the new feature is that it works with mmw, c-band, and lte.

    I don’t post on here….i got this thing dec 30th and shut off my old WiFi which worked perfectly……..so I bring it home got the red light flashing…..then moved it and finally got 2 bars and I was excited……then after 30 secs of working , it says “ no internet connection “. I brought it back to the Verizon store and as usual the damn thing worked PERFECTLY in the store and I took it home and it does the same thing! Now I don’t have WiFi…..kinda pissed to be honest…. What is going on? What is happening? You sound like you have a good grip on these things and the Verizon people are clueless! I’m done watching Verizon videos of just saying move it around! I NEED REAL HELP ! REAL ANSWERS !

    Sorry about your troubles. Honestly, my advice is to cancel Verizon ASAP and revert to your previous provider. Verizon customer service is rarely able to fix these types of problems; the reception in your are might just be bad. - Brian

    You’re too far away from an actual Verizon tower in which your router is supposed to receive the wireless signal from. Notice, No cables to the modem from the wall, except the power. Of course it would work exceptionally at the Verizon store location, where they have the smoke and mirrors at, to impress you with, to get a sale out of you. Of course the reps will play dumb with you just to keep you on board, how else will they get money out of you?
