    12:16 good general discussion, but I disagree with Scott’s point about our testosterone, causing conflict with China. As a US citizen in Taiwan, I believe you are missing out that China is an authoritarian powerful threat to a shrinking world, which it wants to dominate. “We” (meaning the western world and India, not just the USA )should have an aggressive protectionist attitude. In the future, China will be using whatever tech they can create themselves or take from us against us to control our population, economy and government just because these things affect and threaten them and they want to grow more powerful, it’s not evil it’s just what’s going to happen.

    The packet switching she brought up was American Paul Baran, who had published in1960-1964, but he called it the inferior name, "Block Switching" while Davies used the name "packet-switching" and presented to the right people from ARPANET at the Symposium on Operating Systems Principles in October 1967. I wouldn't say the same time. The French claim a role in the invention of the internet with TCP as well.

In how this “game” is played…and it’s quite a game…also the UK is so much about culture vs the US which is commerce. I do think UK & US is a lot like Ancient Greece and Rome. To be fancy, Roman's would learn Greek, Greek philosophy, art, writing etc, and Greece was always seen as the founder of many institutions which Rome admired. The Greeks had a bit of snobby outlook on the Romans. But Rome's empire, military, economy, influence was a 1000 times greater than Greece's. A lot of the legacy of Greece, despite the Roman's conquering of them, was preserved by Rome - a lot of Greek writings, sculptures, plays only exist today due to Roman copies. I think there's a similarity with the UK & US.

Same thing with the VA....the implementation of new systems that didn't work have made things worse rather than better. There was a Twilight Zone show about computers fighting wars. Computer casualties were taken to a room periodically and executed because they had been killed in the latest battle. It was supposed to be less costly because no military had to be put in place or maintained. Will AI fight the battles in the future?

  • @Sumonebody

    @Sumonebody

    Do you know the episode name, I'd like to watch that! I guess you could counter with the example of 'champion warfare' - two kings or champions to decide a battle is mainly a thing of fiction. And even in fiction (like in Troy when Hector and Achilles duelled) the losing side normally ignores the outcome. Sure our AI armies could fight, but I'm gonna ignore the outcome if I lose... For sure though AI will be implemented in military technology - target acquisition, automatic weapons systems, accelerating testing, increased cyber warfare, information warfare, effects on encryption, intelligence analysis.

    Differences with UK & US: UK political institutions are more democratic. Less influence of money in politics. Institutions are significantly older and more mature - our uncodified constitution is 1000 years old, universities, the political system, scientific institutions etc. News and media is more objective. Politics is significantly less partisan. Less inequality and extreme poverty. Larger safety nets, public institutions (namely free healthcare). Larger state more regulation to protect citizens - higher food safety standards, ban on high risk financial instruments. Greater workers rights - more PTO, more public holidays, mat leave. Greater education and literacy rates. UK is more global from it's position in the globe and being a smaller geographical country. No 1st amendment, - as a result significantly less issue of police brutality. Better race relations - never been a history of segregation, race is really a non issue in the UK. UK's influence is waning, but it's history still draws a lot of people, and the UK's influence still punches above it's weight (politics, film, music, sports, military imprint). Having said that, the UK has many negatives, the US has many positives. And I do think (as brexit vote showed), the UK is more culturally close to the US, than it is with Europe.
