Superb interview, Scott. At age 69, I have the benefit of hindsight, & so much of this discussion is pertinent to people of all ages! I wish I had been more attentive to this broad spectrum for happiness at a younger age. But…my wife has kept me around for 50 years, & we’re pretty happy! Thank you for your concise interview questions, as well as allowing your guest to fully respond. You set the high bar for KZread/podcast content!

It’s not just about men losing something (or everything) in their 50s or 60s. It’s the monumental task of starting over and rebuilding in a society that’s not particularly suited to men in their 50s and 60s starting over. It’s the destruction of their identity and the judgement of others. It’s about finding the will and the energy to do it all over again with a tired mind and worn out body that can’t do what they did in their 20s and 30s. It’s about justifying why it’s worth it to rebuild if by the time you get there, if you can get there, you’re bumping up against your 70s or 80s in a best case scenario.

Valuable advice about philosophy! Stoicism and Objectivism can focus you on the need to apply rationality Put another wan, as Spinoza observed, "He alone is free who lives with Free-Consent under the entire guidance of Reason".

I'll be 70 this year and have been retired for the pas five, so I do have some life experience. Contrary to Scott's advice, I did "follow my passion" and I did follow love, not always with a great success, but it paid off. Money was never my goal, enjoying what I do, was. I worked for over 40 years in the entertainment business (Behind the scene). I had some terrible years of professional struggle, and I lost a wife of 25 years to cancer, so it wasn't all fun and roses, but I came out financially secure, I found a new love and I'm having the time of my life... Always follow you gut...

@@ziv2liv you do realize the numbers are still towards people with degree making more money than people without degrees right? Yeah those numbers exist, are one of the most explored metrics, measured both by the government and private company that shows people with a degree will outpace those without even after accounting for the student debt. You’re talking about a subset of the non degree professionals, but in no way shape or form does it change the overall statistical likelihood of degree versus non degree earning over a lifetime in a significant way. But yes that’s why we measure outcomes through research and study, and the numbers are still clear even for your profession, those numbers exist. BLS.

Great watch, I agree with everything Dr. Brooks was saying except the Religion part. It's very depressing to live your life knowing your going to be judged at the end of it, and it's liberating to let go of these stone aged beliefs written by an ancient man who couldn't make sense of the world. It's hard to forgive your self for any life mistake you make, if you feel there is a deity judging your mistakes.

You’re missing the point of transcendent. Do you believe that you should be a better version of yourself tomorrow than you are today? That’s transcendence. Do you believe that life is good, beautiful and true? That’s transcendence. Do you want to live in a way that embodies these things? That’s all it means to be religious. You don’t need a body of dogmatic belief that says the meaning of life is, rather live a life where the meaning in life is defined by you and oriented towards the good, true and beautiful. Bit if you want to live in hedonic, and nihilism that’s also your choice, just don’t hurt anyone in the process or pay the consequences. At least that’s first principles of a liberal society.

True neurobabble is still neurobabble for all that. What help to his audience does citing the relevant neurotransmitters/hormones do? If forging a meaningful 'metaphysical' relationship with your partner is what leads to long term happiness, then give further concrete interventions that contribute to that. Don't just cite oxytocin.

GREAT CONTENT..Do you know Bitcoin is on its way to breaking records, getting closer to hitting new high prices, showing that it's gaining more value and could go even higher than we've seen before. This could mean great things for people looking to invest, suggesting now might be a good time to get involved before it jumps even higher. It's an exciting moment that could change the game in general...managed to grow a nest egg of around 1.2Biitcoin to a decent 6.4Biitcoin. At the heart of this evolution is indeko Glenn, whose deep understanding of both cryptocurrency and traditional trading has been instrumental. Her holistic approach to investment and commitment to staying abreast of market trends make her an invaluable ally in navigating this new era in cryptocurrency investment....
