She must have gotten special treatment under so many circumstances for so long that it astounded he when she finally didn't. There is also a long history of murder cases with female defendants who were found not guilty despite a mountain of evidence to the contrary.

Her reaction is like she went to court for a speeding ticket and suddenly was found guilty of murder, and her lawyer didn't seem to be overly comforting. But she looked as if being found guilty of murder wasn't one of the choices the jury had. She should probably read the indictment next time.

Her lawyer really didn't do his job, if he would have pled for 2nd degree murder at worst, she still would have had a chance at a life afterward, but he falsely gave her confidence that she could "beat" a case with so much "self-inflicted" evidence in regard to text messages.

Her lawyer was a moron if he encouraged her to take this to trial instead of accepting a plea deal. He easily cost her the rest of her natural born youth as she should have took a plea deal for manslaughter and received probably 20 years max with 12-15 with good behavior and she'd be out by her mid 50s, but now she won't see the light of day until at least 65, and this probably is directly a result of the lawyer.

'I can't carry him alone and I can't keep a kicking body in my trunk.' 'I am about to club him on the head as he is waking up.' 'I'm not strong enough. He is very aware now and I am on my own.' --- A friend who did answer her call for help, Adam Siplyak, went to the home on New Year's Eve but said he would not help her to get rid of the body. The following day, he went to the police to report what happened. Janks originally told him that she needed help getting Merriman home because he was high on pills. However, when Siplyak showed up, she confessed what happened. When police arrived his body was found outside under a pile of trash.

Moral of the story? Don't take the law into your own hands. Report to the relevant authorities of any breaches of law. Acting as judge, jury, and executioner is not the answer. I think mandatory min of 25-life is much too harsh. But I'm not going to argue against the conviction. The only affirmative defense to murder is self defense or defense of another person. Vengeance killings, even if the person is a POS is not, and should never be a defense.

As a lawyer this is shocking. Finding nude pictures on her step father's computer is not a legal defense to murder. Had she killed him in the heat of passion when she found out it would be manslaughter. The fact that she planned the killing and took the steps to do it with the sole intent to kill renders her guilty of first degree murder. She cannot use the heat of passion defense in this case. It simply does not work that way. Had she kept her mouth shut then the jury would have to convict her based on the evidence that she committed first degree murder beyond a reasonable doubt. Criminals are usually dumb. This is a classic example of one. The text messages sealed her fate.
