Thank you. Always validate them even apologizing profusely- I’d say step to angles not straight backwards. Sty one step out of kicking range if able. Calm voice yes ! Give them choice(present options) they will feel heard and in more control. Peace.

Speaking of parking spots when somebody parked in my parking spot at the apartments I was living at I then parked in the only open spot I could find which didn't look like it even belonged to anybody. But turns out it did. And the manager told me that the guy who had that spot had gotten his gun and had sworn he was going to kill me. WTF! Luckily when I ran into him he didn't have his gun with him anymore and I was able to deescalate by staying calm and saying I had no idea it was his spot, which was true. That was too close for comfort. I almost got killed over a damn parking spot! I'll fight for freedom, but not some damn parking spot.

Sorry that you had to go through this Bob and Evan . Sadly some people have a lot of internal issues but that doesn't justify their actions one bit. Knowing when to actually defend yourself or just de-escalate is the matter of life and death . So many people have lost their lives over the most petty things possible . Just like that they are gone , very depressing . Hope your friend and yourself Evan made it out and Bob hope you don't have to deal with people that aggressive again . I've dealt with people who took things too personally and tried to get into a fight with me but its not worth the risk even more so if you don't have the skills to fight and the situation is petty . Hope you guys are doing fine and are safe . It really is a crazy world out there .

Forreal. So many videos that have been circulating in the news, if the cops had properly used (or gotten) their de escalation training, people would still be alive, like, there is no reason that someone without a gun or a knife or any weapon, not driving a vehicle, of smaller stature than the one or several cops interacting with them, there is little to no reason that subject should end up injured, let alone dead! How many times have we seen a pair or group of cops run up and immediately start trying to acquire their identification or obtain an arrest, within seconds, no attempt to assess the situation or figure out the root of the problem, they don't show up trying to solve so many of these situations, they show up wanting to make an arrest, write a ticket, because that's what these cops are taught to do, most security jobs, armed or unarmed are about protecting a specific property, police work for the state, they protect state assets, which are everywhere, and are funded by taxes aaaaaand, the justice system! Any fucked up thing that happens in this world. All you gotta do is follow the money They dont care about de escalating, they want to arrest and write tickets, that's why we keep seeing people getting arrested illegally and unnecessarily, and that leads to deaths when the perpetrator carries deadly weapons

The majority of law enforcement officers go through training yearly in this very subject as it is a requirement in most departments, 30 second clip or headlines you read doesn’t do justice what these men and woman go through daily. You have no idea what they do, keep assuming, you’re smarter than everyone

Let's remember that verbal de-escalation depends on the cooperation of the other party. We can attempt to de-escalate all we want and if the other party is already past the verbal stage, it's all going to be for naught. Prepare for the escalation of the physical fight.

Al Gore Rhythm! Funny because when someone at work got in my face and put their finger in my face I did that exact same thing. The only thing that I added was move my right and left hand back and forth coming together in front of me drawing an imaginary line in front of me. That’s when I gave commands for them to get out of my space and say go, move.

Keeping your hands up can also tip them off that you are going to fight ,plus ,if they have a knife, they could slash at your hands, wrist,so be careful with this.

True . They can also grab onto your arm . Honestly once they start arguing , if its out in public just run for your dear life as they may have friends who can suckerpunch you from behind or perhaps a firearm or knife . If it is in a professional workplace , walk away or run but ultimately bring it up to HR if necessary . I've had many situations where I was minding my own business but someone wanted to hurt me for their own reasons . Very scary stuff out there . Just glad I'm not knocked out on the pavement dead which may have happened if I wasn't careful . The world is too unsafe to be called safe , its really bad out there as people lives are ruined by their poor mental health , poverty , drugs and all sorts all over the world . May we all be safe .

Verbal de-escalation in most cases would work, but if you're dealing with a mentally deranged individual &/or has been drinking and is intent on hurting you or robbing you there's probably little chance of doing that. Talking sense to a drunk is a hopeless situation.

  • @ImpactDefense

That’s true, but that’s definitely not a normal situation. You always need training and skills in case verbal de-escalation techniques do not work.

"Mentally deranged" individuals? Even people with mental health problems can be spoken to with these skills. People under the influence of something are different than a person in a mental health crisis. Two different levels of thing and processing information. Criminals also think differently. Some can be talked down depending on the circumstances. It's worth trying anyway. Running away isn't always a solution.
