I can’t be the only one who cackled with laughter at 2:17 when he said, “I’m a-punch wall, and I’m-a punch yooou!” I was howling at that and replayed it many times.

Keep in mind that not all ppl w disabilities look a certain way. You could be interacting w a developmentally low person who does not fit a typical description.

I have a nonverbal resident who depends on body language. She can understand what we are trying to to tell her but she has difficulty ex po ressing her needs verbally so she expresses them by pinching, hitting, or digging her nails into your arm when she is feeling frustrated or when she is uncomfortable with how we are handling her. Its hard for me to watch and makes me sick yo my stomach to watch how my coworkers treat her. I work night shift and am rarely working during the day but when I am mandated to stay she will gravitate towards me even if she understands that I am not her staff fir the day. I always keep an eye on her though.

Short statements. Short questions. Ques by pointing w one word rather than verbal. Pauses in between waiting for response. May take time to process what you asked. If you keep asking over and over without giving time to process what is asked, it can create anxiety and even outburst in an escalated situation. Xo.

I don't think a lot of caregivers actually care. It becomes a ridiculous power struggle about making a dd person comply. Physically handling, being aggressive, and threatening DON'T WORK. Though I watch police and caregivers do these things often.

It's so nice to see a depiction of officers that are understanding and empathetic, especially to those with developmental disabilities. Thank you to all officers who act calmly and with humanity. You are a beacon of hope in the sea of typical bad policing practices.

I understand everything. I am autistic and am tired of mental age theory. I look “normal”, yet process sound and other senses differently and may not appear to understand. But I do understand, often too well!

People with DD are normal and there’s nothing wrong with them they just do stuff at a different pace than other people and that doesn’t make them different. They are normal human beings

@@lauramartin8115 Don't put words in my mouth insinuating that I imply something is wrong. I used "normal" for it's actual use "part of a norm, a recurring thing/phenomenon". What I do imply is that police is already normalizing being hostile to """normal""" people. It would be nice for them to take the same care they do here with everyone period.

If more care were taken for situations like this, there would be less people would be shot by police with autism for not following a command, etc. And like the other commenter said, it won't usually be so obvious.

Sorry if this has a different name I’m using my moms phone, but why call the cops clearly he is having a hard time and is having difficulty processing and when that happens the situation can escalate for a moment and if you know what to do witch the mom clearly dosen’t then it could de escalate the situation. I’m a 17 year old with autism and iv’e been out in these situation’s before and it’s hard for me to do things, like go to my room to calm down. It will take me a few minutes to processes then I would usually do it but I have punched a whole in a wall not because I wanted to because I would never want to do that it’s just that I’m having a hard time and I would threaten people not because I want to just because in the moment I’m angry, frustrated, upset or something to do with my anxiety. Like for an example I can’t deal with any noise that’s high pitch usually dog toys, babies or what noises girls make when there excited. It would sometimes send me into a meltdown but usually I would cover my ears and cry because it sends me into an anxiety attack and in those moments I don’t know what to do but my mom is usually there so she can usually help me in those situations. But in this situation she is obviously confused and didn’t know what to do so she called the cops because she didn’t know what to do and the cops would know what to do but in reality a lot of cops don’t know what autism is so they would just think your trying to hurt someone witch I would never fo now and would put them in handcuffs witch would escalate the situation even more. Not trying to say cops are dumb they just need to learn what to do with people who have DD

. PPl become like the lifestyle and company they are exposed a lot to. it may turn you towards life or towards death... I thought boy was going to have a fit, maybe freezed, too fearful to. Though broke the lamp in chaos. I think he did very well for his issues, don't think I could have handled the unexpected intrusion of them that good, despite education, but then he is more safe, shielded with less stress levels. and traumas to activate. Why and how could she bother the police with boy refusing to clean room? Police needed for worse things, like i couldn't make reports. for about 14 years. OMG, i too can make abiúsive words I don't normally, when feeling attacked, cornered, disturbed, stressed, threatened, intruded upon and abused, not really really knowing what I am saying in that moment, thinking they MUST get me, my pitch and whole expression must telkl them they do wrong by me and make tj´hings bad/worse for me. As soon as they put themselves in my place. Which they never seem to do, though. So they made things up about me, bad, hateful.how shall I stop, change it? I am truly froze in deadly stress and terror, not able to think clearly except a thin thread while I write or talk, but not about THAT. just surviving, and must find a solution. Afraid of worse "punishments" (is there an English word for injury without crime? punishment means theer was a crime or violation.

I am so sad to see this is their typical view of people with certain development trouble. The ones with let's say more brain Power aren't like this. I really want to say as an autistic person, if the "regular" people are so smart why are most top criminals and Police handicapped / some times mentally challanged. I forgot its called unique Ways of approaching. They did get one thing right tho most of the people fitting this stereotype are kinda clinged to their mums. My ex made me realise. I needed to not use childish behaviour. So here I am. Anyway good day xxxx
