dust and dirt will be orange with speckles in it, not yellow. yellow is unburn gases which will produce CO and soot. This is a cause of gas & air mixture not right, having the heater over carpet is not good as carpet holds dust and dirt and the air going to the burner and pilot comes from that location. Ventfree furnaces have large open flames and fire has moisture in it and that is (1) reason you need to keep an window open very little near an ventfree furnace along with needing oxygen to operate the burner and pilot, (why they all have ODS pilots) and not regular gas LP or Nat orifices. Ventfree furnace burner and pilot flames need to be watched for an even blue to light blue flames, light blue flames will be closer to the burner surface to 1/4" from the ports and darker blue flames will be 1/4" to 1" above the burner ports. Ventfree furnace need to to cleaned with a damp (not wet) rag or sponge that will not fall apart and nothing esle. This will be done often when using them in the season (make sure they are cooled down before Ever touching). If you ever remove the pilot it is very important that the pilots go back in the same way most are at 22 degree angle always check your manufactur spec. Never stick anything into the pilots and burner orifice as they mostly all have ruby orifice centers in them for the heat and continuous operation. Never use a ceiling fan or anyother fan around ventfree furnace as it can change the airflow mixture.

Ventless heaters are junk. Puts too much water vapor in the air promoting mold. Pet hair and dust also help it put out CO. Save a little more and get a vented one.

Running off propane is better or no

I recommend a dehumidifier for moisture issues. I live in a 40ft travel trailer in the forest. We have dehumidifiers in all of our sheds and campers. No more mold or condensation. 😊

These heaters are worth every penny. We have 2 in our house. In case of a power outage, you still have heat source

I live in Northern MI and have the radiant Mr Heater 30k BTU ventless (my home is about 1k sq ft). This past fall I had it connected to the 500 gallon propane tank in my yard, so I'll still have heat in case of a power outage just by turning it on, and tapping into the big tank is a game changer! I've also got 2 Big Buddy's (that I used before getting the 30k heater) and many 20 and 100 pound propane tanks in the pole barn, with filters (for the 20 pound tanks) and two stage regulators (for the 100 pound tanks), along with 2 kerosene heaters and many 5 gallon cans of kerosene (I've use kerosene for over 40 years as a backup, but am relatively new to these propane heaters). I'm in my 70's, 5'2", so these all work better for me than dealing with wood. The peace of mind these heaters give make them worth their weight in gold! I've watched all your video's on problem solving with the heaters and thank you very much!

my brother works for Ford up there and he can't wait t retire and leave . He went up there after the Ford plant closed in NJ . You are smart , My neighbors had a bigger tank installed propane fireplace and and range and another propane heat in basement and family room . I am putting mine in my basement . After loosing power in epic ice storm in VA for 10 days and worrying about pipes freezing I am not taking any chances again either . Funny so far this winter has been in 50's and 60's so i am getting yard work done early My eco fan is the best thing ever in front of my propane heater dyna glo

I have a 12x24 shed that is insulated, my windows got quite wet last winter like you were taking about, so I put the plastic stretch tape on insulator stuff on the inside of the window frames and that took care of the wet problem. By keeping the warm off the colder outside window it doesn’t condensate therefore staying clear and dry 😉

I have one of these in a mobile home on my vacation property, it came with it and it's legal for that purpose. I fired it up for the first time today. It needs to be cleaned as the pilot light is burning orange instead of blue and goes out. I'm going to clean it as recommended tomorrow. It puts out major heat and I love how it will maintain the setting over time. Very cool! No worries about Oxygen, the mobile home isn't tight (yet). It's being fed by a large propane tank the previous owner bought outright. Thank you for this video. Thanks to you and others I've learned a lot! The manual for these are available on the internet. I have a Mr. Heater 30,000 BTU model.

@@user-yf2iv1rt7l well, called mr. heater and they sent a replacement… we first sent them our unit and had the replacement sent to us within the same week . The company was very helpful. And yes the flames came out around a few inches taller than the heater.

@@user-yf2iv1rt7l I haven’t heard of dyna-glo… (dyna-glo maybe related to bluegrass?) we bought one from bluegrass because I wanted the black color….it had problems …Bluegrass doesn’t answer phones or email so we went back to mr.heater….we keep it on the first setting and keeps an open floor plan house of around 1500sqft warm, still we wear warm clothes as we are not trying to burn thru the propane!( we have the 30000 btu propane) definitely buy the blower!

I heated my home with one and a 20 pound propane tank for 2 weeks one February. I didn't turn it up much, but it was bearable and my pipes didn't freeze

We have one blue flame and when it's dirty makes that diesel stink. Vacuumed or blow out dust helps. We just bought a catalytic orange flame one for the other room. I like it better. Keep the windows open a little.

This was an amazing video and a huge help! I just recently bought a house and it came with this heater so the 7 tips were extremely helpful! Mine def needs a cleaning. I was wondering when I set the heater to setting 1 or 2 it kicks on and off, is this normal? Between cycles the pilot stays on and there is no gas smell. Just want to be sure for safety. Thanks!

I know it's a year later after your question, but yes. It is normal to kick on and off on setting 1 or 2 with the pilot light continuing to stay on. I'm sure you figured it out already, just thought I would help. Take care.

My tips, if you need to have great control over the amount of heat needed, get a Open Flame like the one in the video, you can turn then down very low, whereas a heater that is a Radiant heater, you have setting, Low, Medium, High, low for many is too hot sometimes, so you cycle on, off, PITA. Also keep in mind between the spring and fall when the heaters not in use, spiders love to build webs in or around your pilot light, always look and clean before using in the fall. My last is in very well built homes that are insulated very well, need a little draft/air movement in the house, fire burns oxygen, that oxygen needs to be replenished, that’s why some people get a funny smell, I believe the air is more Burnt, then fresh, this really becomes true in some homes, and wood burning stoves, some folks can’t get their wood stoves to light very well, they just can’t get the fire burning well, it’s because it can’t get enough air to draft right, open a window slightly while firing up the stove, once running and you got good coals, close the window. When running our wood stove, I do keep a cracked window close to the stove.

They now make the radiant 1s with a better control , ie 1 thru 10 , settings . The radiant isore efficient in my opinion than the blue flame heaters . Also it is harder for a child to start a fire or your pet to get singed or be a racing flame thrower with a radiant. That is not to say those things will not happen just not as easily . I have had both the open blue flame & the radiant heaters & have learned the pros & cons of both & prefer the radiant heaters as far as safety is concerned .

I have two one in a two room living room .. rooms are 12x12 with 10ft high ceiling and two ceiling fans .. I always set it to 3 and both rooms get warm fast ceiling fans on low and in reverse.. before I start the heater for the winter season.. I vacuum all the vent holes and clean the pilot tip .. the other one I have in basement I only turn that one on when temps get below in the teens so pipes don’t freeze and that one’s in a open basement no rooms

I figured since these things are fairly common in rural areas, and there's a learning curve to them, it'd make a useful video.

I put one of those in my shop. Worked great, no problems-until I started cleaning with chemicals or welding. Then the smells got so bad, I quit using it. It's like new, but not going to use it again. I had good ventilation and it still stink's. Thanks for sharing Iowa is watching :) Happy Thanksgiving everyone :)

Yep exact same issues I had. All of the chemical vapors in the air hit the open flames and are combusting, creating more toxic vapors that permeate the room. The smell is unbearable and I can't imagine what's in that stew of burning toxic chemicals that you are breathing. I kept the heater but I'd only use it as a back up for emergencies.

I wish more people would stop bullshitting on the safeness of these things, its VENTLESS, which common sense tells you that the fumes will accumulate and you will breathe them eventually effecting your health. Not worth it to me just my opinion

Thanks for the good tips. I have a Mr. heater 36K btu unit that I stored outside during the summer. Now I can't get the pilot to light. Same thing happened with my previous heater. Will try to clean it. This heater works great for my living room. I keep the fireplace flu opened for air and I have carbon monoxide alarms installed.

Clean ALL the lines not just the pilot light. I have had the same problem during the summer & started , vacuuming the entire unit very well used duct tape to cover the large lines & found a plastic "cap" to gently put over the pilot light then covered in a heavy duty garbage bag . It ended the issue you are having now . I know this sounds OCD but not many of us can afford to buy a new 1 every yr because they are not cheap.

Well the same day I saw this video it inspired me to work on the heater. 4 screws front cover came off. Cleaned everything with a vacuum, rag, and hosed down the front cover because it was pretty dirty. Inside of heater looked new. I took that flare fitting and line off the pilot (with a flare wrench) and also that small thread to flare adaptor which has a tiny hole, similar to a carburetor jet. That fitting was plugged with a small piece of dirt. Cleaned that and bingo, it's running perfect now. Took me about an hour. You're right, these units have gone way up in price, Amazon wants like $350.

I checked to see how much I paid for this unit, which is a 30K not 36K btu. I purchased it on ebay back in 2019 for $204. Now the same heater is $322. Wow, what happened? how come the prices are way higher now?

These units require adequate fresh air for proper combustion and user safety. Be sure to follow the instructions in the owner's manual, regarding combustion air and correct heater sizing for the space you intend to heat. If excess condensation forms on windows and walls, you'll need to provide more fresh air for the indoor space.

I'm using the Bluegrass Living one (which is very attractive unlike the other brands) and it's very cheap to operate. My house was built in 1935 and it 640 sqft. I have to infrared model and it works so well. I have not died from not having it vented outside. The worst part was the first week when it stunk so bad and would make it hard to breathe, but after it burned off all that it was fine. Now it only stinks for the first 2 days every year when I start using it, but it doesn't stink like it did when it was brand new for a week. After it stops stinking, you more or less have a chlorine pool smell a little bit, but it's not bad at all.

Great video, I run my 30k btu mr heat on 2 40 gal tanks. When they get close to empty it stinks , the rotten egg smell , is this just a fact of life running this type of heater.

I have a relative who heats his home with a similar heater ..his ac unit is in the attic( which is really cold in the winter) and the moist hot air was going up through the return vent and the condensation got to the circuit board and caused rust then in the spring when the ac was tuned on the board burnt up..he ended up blocking the return vent the following fall to stop the rusting...just something to think about...

Lower wall placement will yield more contact time with the air convectively thus reducing burn time, and your gas bill.. I have a procom 30k blue flame heater.

Great video but you forgot to mention that dehumidifiers solve the humidity issue. I like my kitchen in the winter at 72 and on very cold days (ie 20 degrees Fahrenheit) my kitchen windows will definitely fog up and the dehumidifiers always solves this issue. Just like it does in the bathroom when one takes a very hot shower on a cold day. Dehumidifiers are the solution to indoor moisture.

They heat well are pretty cheap to buy and run the only drawback for me is they cause mold. They create a lot of moisture. If you have one in your home you will need a few dehumidifiers.

I have a ventless heater that has the infrared bricks & actually gone thru 2 of them in 20 plus yrs . I live in a very old mobile home & the only reason for 1 to not be usable for me is when the mobile has settled & 1 of the "bricks" has cracked . When 1 cracks it can cause the pilot light to blow out & I am always worried about gas still coming thru & building up in the house . I have yet to find a way to replace the broken "brick" so have had to replace the entire unit. Other than that I have no other complaints about them .

With a ventless heater when you see condensation on the windows it is time to crack the window an inch for oxygen. It won’t cost you that much and will keep you and the flame alive. Cleaning the pilot orifice means removing it and soaking it in rubbing alcohol for an hour and blowing thru it. It needs cleaned if the flame shroud doesn’t have a cherry red ring. You’ll think it is everything else. It is not. It’s a gummed up orifice. No other gas appliance gums up like a foreign made heater.

i don't understand what fresh air is supposed to do. if your interior air is warmer than the outside air, you're going to be getting condensation--heater or not.

I had one of these in my living room just for heat when the power goes out. I had every problem you described with it especially the odd smell. I never trusted it. Eventually my wife wanted a vent free gas fireplace. I told her no way. ( no place for a vent). She got her way of course. Put it in and absolutely no problems. The flame is more orange than Blue ?? That doesn’t seem right but all good.

Spray bottle with water only, wash out the pilot and your good to go. We use ours in a dirty room with no problems.

I use to inspect for Carbon Monoxide and my friend had one which I tested his home for CO and 4ppm of CO was the result.This is a low number but I prefer 0 ppm in my home!

My pilot light stays lit but when I turn up the thermostat for it to turn on it does a minimal Burst flame which just does very small flickering flame across the bar but then blows out along with the pilot light? Any idea? This thing is brand new and has not been used but a few hours

The ODS is just a hyper sensitive pressure switch. It shuts off the gas when the weight of the air indicates slightly low oxygen.

Sounds like dust to me.

The Gas Man that comes to start the my ventless gas heater, for the winter says just don't use any arasol's around it cause it will stop up the pilot light and don't run the ceiling fans on high so I turned it off for summer and put a LG. plastic black bag all around to keep from damaging in the pilot Hopefully! This is the second year I will be using it but it is a bit hard to get started I haven't tried this year yet! I ALSO use electricity and a wood stove for other parts of the house I HOPE I won't have trouble with IT this year Thanks for your post It is a picky heater You have to be so careful It is not to CHEAP to operate either😢

Now! You can set it to low, and its start popping! That is gas escaping and can smell it. Just turn it up a little bit to stop that popping. YOUR SET 👍 Yes you want to keep it clean! During the summer, i put a plastic bag over it, to help keep it clean. You definitely don't want any thing to catch on fire. Like spider webs, comb webs. ect. in your stove! Any thing that would catch on fire. Some time a mice or rat will chew into the lines. So if you smell gas? Test it with soap and water and inspect the line for chew marks and cracks. Most of the time you didn't turn the valve tight enough on the tank to get a proper seal. Hand tight is plenty! as hard as you can. Then test it with soap and water ~ ALSO ITS A NO NO! to use metal tools on gas brass fittings! It got to be brass on brass tools ~ All it take is 1 spark! and BOOM!

I'm puzzled...we hooked up a procom 10000btu propane heater and have the kitchen window cracked in the kitchen behind it and have no carpet and it keeps burning orange. We took an air hose and using small bursts of air, blew out the inside and got all the dirt and dust out. We have a 2 step regulator on a 100lb tank and have used these heaters before when we lived in TN last yr. Were now in IN. Any suggestions? Thanks

Please help! I have a gas ventless heater that won't light. I changed out the thermocouple/ ignitor and cleaned the unit but it still won't light. I lit it with a lighter manually but it only ran for about 45 seconds. Any suggestions?

Do all ventless heaters have these issues? What brand do you own? How do the ceramic infrared heaters compare to the blue flame heaters? Thanks.

I've had both. The blue flame models heat the room's air in a similar way that forced air heat does. The ceramic infrared heaters heat the objects in the room. It's more of a radiant heat like what you would feel on a sunny cold day standing in the sunshine. You will feel an instant warmth in the presence of a radiant heater. They work in uninsulated spaces much better than blue flame. Unfortunately with both types I had these issues. They are unvented so all the combustion particles fill up the space.

Does the propane ones do the same????

I got a pro com 25,000 btu for my 6x8 elevated hunting blind. Like brand new. Only paid $5 for it. It came with a wall mount and 2 foot hose. I am running the hose through the floor, and 8 foot down to the ground to the tank. So I will need and extention hose. Do I need a regulator, or anything for it? Shut off valve maybe? My hunting blind is very well insulated, carpeted, wrapped in metal, and sealed windows. It is built as good, or better than my house. So this is way over kill. But couldn't pass up the deal. Just want to be sure I do the plumbing correctly.

Your tank should be provided with a propane gas regulator, preferably a two-stage unit. They can be purchased inexpensively from a number of online suppliers, from ebay sellers, or from a big box store or hardware store. Hose extensions or longer hoses can also be found from those sources. Be sure to soap test all of your gas connections before firing up the heater. Put water and a squeeze of dish soap into an empty spray bottle, shake it up, and spray all gas connections, looking for bubbles to appear. If you see bubbles, you have a gas leak. Never fire up a gas heater if you suspect a gas leak.

Thanks for the vid. Maybe you can give me some more insight. In approx a 30x30 shop, insulated, drywalled, concrete floor, I run a Mr.Heater ventless. Been fine all winter. Last 2 times I used it, which was days after staining, it smelled like Kerosene majorly, and left a light haze in the air. Upon finding your video, the fact that I had stained a table in here on 2 different occasions, explained the odor. I've taken the face off, blew out the burner well. Wiped everything down, all clean and shiny. Just fired it up, and smelling the air its giving out above it, still smells of kerosene. Havent had it running long yet (10 mins) if the odor should continue, any other suggestions? Not poisonous, right? I've got a nice blue flame with minimal flames of orange. Appreciate any intel. Will be the last time staining/painting out here with it running, thats for sure.

Stains and paints can offgass heavily for days or weeks when freshly applied. That's probably the issue. It's not bad, but you might consider some extra ventilation for a bit.

How do you keep house smelling good whenever you can't spray house spray rgej

I have a redstone heater like this from tractor supply, it's about 5 or so years old..this year I can't get the main burner to burn...the pilot will burn and stay lit but when I turn the knob to kick it on, the main burner will start for a couple seconds then trickle down to nothing almost like it's not getting any gas....anyone have any ideas?
