The Venom movie is really boring, but when you watch it with a friend you will have the best time of your life. Its not a cinematic masterpiece but its the kind of thing you can absolutely have fun with when you watch it with the boys. Tom Hardy absolutely knows thats the appeal of this movie and ups it even more with the sequel. I get not liking it from a critical point of view, but you should also consider this side of the coin and it may help yoh understand where a lot of people come from.

Also you are just blatantly wrong about Venom's origin. Eddie isn't manipulated by the symbiote originally. If anything it is the opposite. Eddie corrupted the symbiote with his grudges and hatred. I can understand this misconception if you don't read comics though.

I think when most people say Venom is mainly a villain they're mostly thinking of the Mac Gargan version, which was a much more villainous version of the character. This is the version that appeared in very popular storylines, like Civil War, so it became the main exposure to the character for some. Also doesn't help that most adaptations don't go much beyond Venom's origin.

This film as well as its sequel are honestly huge guilty pleasures for me.

Venom for me is just a fun movie, like yeah ik, the writing isnt the best but i love the action scenes and seeing Venom, my favorite character in any fictional media ever on screen is just so cool to me! Do still wish the movies were able to be rated R though, its very obvious alotta scenes were cut

Yeah I kinda feel like this movie would have done better without the PG 13 restriction and was given a full hard R rating... that and somehow having it so Spider-man had the venom symbiote before the events of the movie (My idea being Spider-man found the symbiote in a simmer why to the 90s animated series realized the suits alive and it was turning him into a prick then rejected it, then the life foundation found and captured the venom symbiote and kept it in a lab till Eddy found it and the rest of the movie plays out the same but with blood and gore)

As a fun fact, originally in the comics the symbiote wasn't making Peter evil, he was only using his sleeping body to fight criminals and kiss Black Cat at night.

16:35 This is actually a common misconception about symbiotes and Venom, they're not actually evil, the reason why it made Spider-man angry and violent is because it just didn't understand the problem with that, theirs actually plenty of examples of symbiotes that were good and didn't negatively affect the host like Toxin, Agent Venom, Mania, and for awhile Scream (theirs also the problem that whenever people talk about symbiotes everyone uses different lore and pretty much all of them could fit so that just makes it more confusing, but the most accepted lore for symbiotes is that they aren't born evil and they learn from their hosts, which is why Carnage is always evil, because his first host was Cletus Kasady) I agree with pretty much everything else you said tho

Venom (2018) is definitely not perfect, but for what it is, its an enjoyable so bad its good movie, at least in my opinion.

The craziest part is that this movie was already made and it was done great. It was a movie called “Upgrade”. Instead of a symbiote it’s a computer chip on his spinal cord. The movie is so much better than Venom is will make it obsolete

This movie is an early 2000s super hero movie released in 2018. That era where no one knew what to do with cape shit, so they made a bunch of angsty character dramas with surprisingly graphic violence sprinkled in.

All i remember was eminem said VENOM VENOM VENOM VENOM the movie was alright

GodzillaMendoza brought up a good point that they could’ve done a live-action outing for Miguel, adapt the Spider-Girl comics starring Mayday Parker, or even doing an adaptation of Superior Foes of Spider-Man. Also imagine this unlikely scenario, WB licenses out Superman to Sony and we get an animated adaptation of the Superman vs The Amazing Spider-Man comic.

Apparently part of the reason the first Venom made so much was due to its marketing campaign in China, where there were adverts portraying Venom as a caring boyfriend.

My biggest gripe is that Venom as a movie contradicts Spider-Man's message when he gets rid of the symbiote: Resist the temptation of greater power if that power destroys not only you but those you love and the values you stand for. Like, there aren't any real consequences for Eddie using the symbiote. Hell even killing is okay because "we only eat bad guys". Nevermind the fact some people turn to a life of crime out of desperation or they're really young and don't know any better. Nevermind that some of them have the potential to be redeemed, but that opportunity for redemption is taken away because Eddie's space goo friend got the munchies. And lastly, there are totally no issues with Eddie and Venom being the sole judge, jury, and executioner. I'd rant more but this movie just seems like a way for Sony to secure the rights of Spider-Man villains so they can stick it to their bitter ex, Marvel.

Yeah but that measage only a thing when the suit makes him more violent(which only exists in adaptations, 616 doesn’t do this) The rest sound like you dont like superhero characters without a no kill rule (which is fine)

Spider-Slop and Across The Sloppy-verse cannot compare to the likes of Peakbious and Venom and Venom 2: Let There Be Peak. But in all honestly at least we can agree that the 1st Venom movie had more of a cohesive story than the 2nd.

The Venom movies are basically drugs. They are bad for you but goddamn are they fun as hell

Unpopular opinion, but I think Topher Grace is a better Eddie Brock than Tom Hardy. Sure, Tom Hardy's take has good chemistry with Venom, but outside of that, he's a pretty boring and unremarkable character. What made Eddie work as a villain turned anti-hero is that he has a petty, vengeful side of him that blames everyone except himself whenever issues in his live happens. He blames Peter for ruining his life when in reality, he's just as guilty for his own downfall, but he's too bitter to realize that, and it's only after he becomes the "Lethal Protector" that he starts to become more noble and heroic. In the Venom films, he's way too selfless and relatable. Hell, the only reason he met Venom wasn't out of shared spite, but because he was contacted to expose a CEO and his company for doing unethical testing on humans. There's no edge to his personality. For all the issues Spider-Man 3 had, it at least perfectly portrayed Eddie as an asshole who self-sabotaged his own life thanks to his dishonesty.

This movie is a direct adaptation from those solo venom comic up until knull shit, and yes most of the time venom is fighting his own children, if the venomverse is successful sadly we will see more of these in the future

You could ask me if I took anything away after watching Venom or Let There Be Carnage and I will either say “The guy who plays Eddie is hot” or “Venom and Eddie will be historically remembered as just roommates”

I thought it was a fun movie, I get what your saying and all your points are valid but as someone who never really knew much about venom before watching this movie for the first time the first few segments were cool because it was kind of introducing me to something I knew nothing about because I have never watched any of the Sam Raimi spider man movies so it was kind of fun to discover what this creature is all about but I also get how someone who knows all the lore, like you, could really not enjoy the film as the first half is sort of an exposition dump for stuff you already know.

There are multiple factors that play into why people like this movie. Like how it was in production hell for 20 years, Sony not being able to use Spider-Man at the time, Tom Hardy's performance, what it takes from all the solo Venom comics, its alot of outside factors you have to already to like in ORDER to like the movie. Probably the only time id say a movie just isnt for you than it being bad.

I don’t find this a bad film but Your points are valid about the film’s flaws, One thing I will say Venom is one of the Few Spider-Man characters who can hold a film of his own(albeit in a universe with Spider-Man though from what I understand Sony’s contract with Marvel prevents them from having Peter Parker in that universe as a major character though if you ask me they should have a Spider-Man, it could be Miles Morales but I’d actually suggest Ben Reilly!)

the best thing about this movie for me is when my friend had a dream about it where he was in the movie and the venom song was playing as he was walking thru the city getting louder then when it was at max volume the symbiote jumped at him and merged with him then it was the scene where he was fighting the police officers in the apartment as venom and he grabbed one of the officers and opened his mouth and the song lyrics came out and fried the dude's face, then he ran up a skyscraper screamed out the rest of the lyrics then he woke up.

The appeal of Venom is watching Tom Hardy look like shit while evil goo monster calls him a loser.

best superhero franchise of this decade too

When it comes to "This character is a villain/Anti-Hero and we're gonna lean hard into that for marketing" is... it CAN work, there are plenty of stories where the point is "Protagonist is not a good person, but they've found an even WORSE person that they can't tolerate". Not saying Venom executed it well (the only times I've watched it I was drunk. Like... really drunk.) Actually, come to think of it, that's my favorite description of the "Darkman" movies. "He's a villain who battles other villains." and I think that can totally make for an entertaining franchise.

I like the Venom films, but One problem I have with cinematic universes is that they use so many different characters to make the same action comedy films. I think Venom should’ve leaned more into action.
