Venice is considered to be one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in the world. But, more importantly for the Jews, Venice was the first ghetto in the world. As we walk along the canals with professor of literature, Saul Bassi, he tells us about his ancestors' turbulent history fleeing the pogroms in Germany, founding a community, and building synagogues, all while learning to live together and respecting strict rules.
In one of the ghetto's five synagogues, we attend a Bar Mitzvah ceremony led by Venice's Chief Rabbi, Scialom Bahbout. He lives and works in the ghetto and promises to keep the spirit of the Jewish culture alive for future generations.
