I INFILTRATED NY's Jewish Community: IT SHOCKED Me!

I am planning to visit Isreal very soon. I am fascinated with the Jewish culture and I want to learn a bit more. So, I decided to visit the Hasidic Jews of Brooklyn, New York. They are widely considered to be America’s most religious and closed-off community, even more than the Amish of Pennsylvania.
In this short video, I start my research about the traditions and customs. It is very hard to get anyone to talk on camera but I tried. I think this video will show you the challenges that I encountered.
In my climax scene, I finally met a gentleman who was kind enough to talk to me. He explained to me a couple of things and I knew it would be the best I will be able to do that day I will certainly be back and try to get more answers to more questions.
This story is really fascinating and I can't wait to return there. From the traditional clothing, music, and food to the strict gender roles and controversies surrounding the community, this is the beginning of the conversation on Hasidic life.
Hasidism, sometimes spelled Chassidism, and also known as Hasidic Judaism, is a Jewish religious group that arose as a spiritual revival movement in the territory of contemporary Western Ukraine during the 18th century, and spread rapidly throughout Eastern Europe.

Bro these people are the most mysterious people I have ever came across in the western world. I used to see them in an area called Stamford Hill in London UK way back in the early 90's. Also another area called Golden Green in London. They don't mix and interact with the rest of the society. Ivan the fact you could even get them to have a brief conversation with you is impressive.

The flip phones are used because it allows the avoidance of consequences related to social media addiction. Most smartphone users are hopelessly addicted and consequently suffer from depression, insomnia, anxiety, loneliness and isolation. Leaving many existing in a state where their attention and self determination is captured by mechanisms outside of their own will. Real human relationships are forged via experiences that occur in reality.

Hello Carol. I'm a Jew, a religious Jew, and frankly I do not know what you are talking about. Jews buy stuff everywhere. Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, Shop Rite. Just about anywhere. Your comment is very weird, like we're hoarding money, and keeping it from other people. Very strange comment. For house repairs, I hire a black electrician, a Greek HVAC guy, a white non-Jewish plumber. And there are plenty of Jewish repair people I could hire instead, but I am familiar with these guys and they've never let me down, so why look elsewhere. I'm really scratching my head here, trying to figure out what you are talking about, saying we only buy from our own people. It's a strange thing, when it comes to money, people always accuse Jews of doing something weird. It's a nasty habit that many non-Jews like you Carol have.

The one thing I'll add is that certain foods, Jews can only buy from Jews, because chicken and meat for example have to be slaughtered correctly by a rabbi who knows the laws of kosher slaughtering. And it is difficult to buy modest clothes just anywhere, so a community like the Satmar of Williamsburg will have many Jewish owned clothing stores that specialize in modest clothing for women, or that carry specialized long coats and hats for the chassidic men. But, other than those items, Jews frequently buy things outside of the Jewish community.

You are sooooo correct about these Jaws and how they keep their business wealth within their own communities. My uncle use to tell me in the 1970s that back in his early days (around the 1940s) in Iraq, how the Jews use to walk a very long distance to Jewish bakeries, etc. to buy their food despite other bakeries near to them, so that the profit/wealth should not benefit other people, like Muslims for example!! Extremely stingy people and a closed-minded community! Look how these two were talking to the gentleman like he was trying to deceive or take an advantage from them lol!

Interestingly at the end he mentioned actually answered your question and gave one of the biggest difference between between Hasidic and other Jews which is over ownership of Israel, they follow the teaching that they mustn't take possession of Israel before the coming of the Mossiah. This is evident in the extreme with the Naturei Karta but is a widely held Hassidic belief, it is also a cause of friction in things in Israel like National Service etc.

Hi Ivan, I'm glad I came across your video. I can try and answer some of your questions. The reason why they're all on their phones most of the time is they're listening to Jewish broadcast hotlines. They don't use the internet, and this is a way to find out all that's happening in their communities. As well as Bible studies. They tend to shy away from interviews partly because most don't have any association with non jews. Although you will find many within the hasidic community that do feel more comfortable and have smart phones, etc, it's a matter of bumping into them. I suggest you visit Boro Park in Brooklyn, another hasidic enclave, but a more diverse community, not so insular. I'd gladly show you around boro park next time you're in NYC and answer any questions you might have Mike

As a religous Jew, i will explain. The torah warns us to guard our eyes (what we look at) and be careful of things which may tempt the heart to stray. Smart phones have internet access and people can send you things which are immodest. Smart phones or computers can be used only if they are filtered. Bless you.

This is so much better to listen to than the foolishness Marwa yabb about on his vlog. Especially talking about getting women pregnant in columbia. TMI and quite distasteful. Keep good and clean contents and we will watch you. Love from Bethesda MD.

Hi. I just want to say that I watched your video with interest. I am an orthodox Jewish woman. Although I am not Hasidic I am familiar with the Hasidic community and its customs and culture. Please do not take offense by their refusal to talk to you. As stated by many in the comments section, they aren’t used to cameras and they are wary of strangers. That’s not a bad thing. It makes sense not to trust people you don’t know in 2023 when there is so much crime everywhere. Many rabbis in the Hasidic community suggest that using smartphones should be avoided do to the inappropriate content on the internet. These Hasidic Jews are trying to remain pure and protect themselves from being exposed to immorality of which there is plenty of on the internet. In my opinion their efforts should be admired. They live very wholesome and moral lives with faith and family at the core. The Jewish people in general are kind, just, peaceful and loving. Good luck to you with your channel.

The reason for the flip phone is easy. Men and women try to avoid seeing the filth on the internet and avoid talking to the opposite sex other than your spouse because marriage is holy and special. Also, the reason why you get a lot of reluctance is unfortunately, because of antisemitism. Because of a lot of hate, our communities are very closed. Mixed with that, is the fact that religious Jews don’t really mix with secular society. Because secular society has a lot of, not the best, morals. So many religious will usually stay within their own community and they’re very hesitant with people that are outside of the community coming in. It’s more of a protection type of thing. It’s not anything rooted in hostility. Because once you get to know these people, they are the nicest people you will ever meet. but there’s just a reluctance of having a stranger walk around, because of past things. What is this person want? What is he doing? You get a lot of antisemitic stuff. You get a lot of anti-Israel stuff. Our properties get graffitied with swastikas and hate. So it’s just a very closed environment.

Ivan very good video at least you got some to speak to you. They are taught to be leery and weary of strangers within some of the Hasidic sect community. Although they live in the US some of them do not speak English, they speak Yiddish. They have no TV in their homes and as you said they use of the Flip phones it is to limit internet access, some sects are very insular and “ do not mix with the outside world” although it surrounds them. You should have gone to the Crown Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn and would have been more fruitful in your quest to actually engage and get more relevant information.
