Venice and the Ottoman Empire: Crash Course World History #19

In which John Green discusses the strange and mutually beneficial relationship between a republic, the city-state of Venice, and an Empire, the Ottomans--and how studying history can help you to be a better boyfriend/girlfriend. Together, the Ottoman Empire and Venice grew wealthy by facilitating trade: The Venetians had ships and nautical expertise; the Ottomans had access to many of the most valuable goods in the world, especially pepper and grain. Working together across cultural and religious divides, they both become very rich, and the Ottomans became one of the most powerful political entities in the world. We also discuss how economic realities can overcome religious and political differences (in this case between Muslims and Christians), the doges of Venice, the sultans of the Ottoman empire, the janissaries, and the so-called slave aristocracy of the Ottoman Empire, and how money and knowledge from the Islamic world helped fuel and fund the European Renaissance. Also, there's a They Might Be Giants joke.

For people who don't know, the funny hat of the Ottoman Sultans is the white thing the dead body is covered when they die, they wear it on their head as a symbol of humble and to remember death and also to not get cocky with their wealth

+Yasser Otmani Actually am not sure if what you said is true, this is just a turban many muslims wore throughout history. And the red hat, aka as Fez in Turkish or Tarboosh in arabian levantine, was an ottoman turkish invented hat that muslims, mostly Turkish and arab muslims of levantine, egypt and morroco wore throughout the caliphate. But I do know that people in sudan till now wear this white cloth around their head, aka as Kaffan in arabic, which is used to wrap the dead body before its placed inside the grave.

The Ottoman empire is a fascinating study, and Venice was unique in its time. One interesting thing is that the Ottomans didn't call Suleiman "the Magnificent"--that was the Europeans. His own people revered him as "the Lawgiver." Like Justinian, he collected and codified the laws, making them consistent across the empire. And unlike Mongols, Goths and Vandals, where the Ottomans conquered, they built. The constructed buildings, encouraged trade, and generally the whole population had a better quality of life than they did under many previous governments.

It isn't my place to correct John but I feel like he represented as almost all Devshirmes were eunuchs, which is very wrong. Janissaries were no eunuchs, as well as most of the bureucrat devshirmes. For example the famous Grand Vizier Pargalı İbrahim Paşa who was originally Greek was married to the sister of Sultan Suleiman and his most renowned successor Rüstem Paşa(originally Croat) was married to Suleiman's daughter and they both had kids from them. I'm not sure but I feel like it would be quite hard to do these stuffs if they were eunuchs.

They are very interesting and help me brush off some of my high school history lessons and teach me a lot that I never learned in school. I've been wondering for a while how the Ottoman empire ended. I know it has something to do with the first world war but that's about it. Could you make an episode on the Ottoman empire alone? Due to their long existence, they are at risk of being part of many videos without ever being properly explained.

A few facts I pulled out of a wonderful guide book whose name has slipt my mind. - Venice used to be marshlands and was then heavily farmed when it was in it's early stages (like 500AD) Now only the outer islands are farmed and used for farming. - Venice used to have huge gardens, each mansion (palace) had it's own garden. Land was in short supply so these villas were only for the rich and wealthy and each mansion was about 5 stories high. The bottom story was for storage, as it flooded a lot and each house on the canal had a back door leading right into the water! (for supplies and delivery) Today however, all of the grass is gone except for small privately owned areas and public gardens (which are tiny and normally owned by museums) - All paths that have 'rio' in front of it's name used to be canals! They were paved over during the rise of automobile popularity! (Even tho there are no cars in Venice, nice one Venice) - The foundations haven't been altered since it's construction almost 1200 years ago! - The original saint of Venice was Saint Theodore of Amasea - There is a throne made of stone on one of the outer islands of Venice said to be the throne of Attila the Hun

Erendira912 The Ottomans are never mentioned because telling about the Ottomans will reveal the weakness of Europe in the middle ages and to the seventeenth century. Even the Mongols get their places in history books, but when things get to the non-European, Muslim and Turkic Ottomans we get to alienate an era, wiping it out of the minds and never open these chapters of history. As a conclusion: no-one wants to talk more about the Ottomans. -Same goes for the Arabic empires, the South-East Asian kingdoms etc.

summary: everyone in this era cared about money, eating lots of food, and having the newest device, although all the devices were pretty much the same. China made a clever comeback by putting the western world in a ton of debt, but Russia kicked it old-school, conquering their neighbours with military power, rather than ipods. Religions began to decline globally and a lot of countries became more peaceful. There was also a super secret world powert called Google, hiding in their labs programming god-knows-what new product.

I like how crash course is not only useful but also professionally(half informally ish) done and although these videos are shown in schools and classes all around the world, it was only shown in my class today when my teacher was trying to look fancy and well organised for another teacher that was filming "class life" today. It was so cool to have this in class but so embarrassing cause no one else knew about crash course(or vlogbrothers or John green or mental floss(cause who knows who the eff is Hank???)). An explanation on why I finally got the chance to watch crash course in class and this was what went on. My teacher throughout the lesson was pretty much this: "hahaha I say something, you guys laugh" *cue genuine laughter* "now, I will pause at this nice, glamorous frame" *pauses at **0:52* "and all of you will turn to page 83, highlight something while you talk to one another and- oh. Ok Mr Loh is done. Now time for today's test on Venice I know none of you actually studied for"

My teacher makes my AP class watch these videos and answers questions along with the video. It's not bad, but when you forget to do it and have to watch a 10-15 minute video quickly before school and write answers down, it sucks XD. Very helpful though. I'll be sure to watch these before my test at the end of the year.

Not all devshirme's were eunichs, actually eunichs were collected from Africa, they were not european boys. And, only Janissaries were forbidden to have children, burocrats(called pashas in the Empire) were allowed to marry and have a family, they often served as governors(Ottomans ruled over a vast territory and most of them weren't so easy to govern). This system not only resulted in a stability and prevented nobles from undermining the sultan, it also created a great, well educated ruling class. Who're trained as generals, diplomats and so much more. Suleiman the Magnificent for example had the best governing officers of his time. But it's quite true that Ottomans had a semi-aristocrasy, a pasha lived under very harsh principles. For example, if they were serving the sultan as his governor, no matter what, they couldn't live their territory, any lack of dicipline meant death and sultan could have any of them killed if he wanted. And Janisseries became a unique social class that even the sultans tried their best to get along with.

Snobby Gamer Eunochs were collected from Africa, i can't remember what they're called but some sort of cult, kidnapped young boys and turned them into eunochs to sell them to Ottomans. I wasn't clear about devshirme i guess. Devshirme was a system to provide good ruling class, Harem guards were chosen from a different sort of people. And the bloody succession actually served to higher purposes in my opinion, always the strong one came to power until Bayezid the second, his brother was much like his father but he managed to trick him and get the throne. Before converting to islam, turks were a middle asian nomadic society, and the blood of the khans(ruler) were sacred and all children of a khan had some sort of territory when a khan died. This of cource cannot be allowed in an empire that wants to keep his power and stability, Mehmet the second simply wanted a succession law that served the Ottoman Empire's purposes. And the succession was mostly obvious even before the Sultan dies, Sehzades(Ottoman princes) were serving as governors already, they were actively ruling some part of territory when their father was on the throne, and a good prince always knew how to gain support from pashas and the people. The biggest element was the jannisaries, elite guard of the sultan, anyone who wasn't favored by the jannisaries in Istanbul would have quite a hard time to keep his rule together, Suleiman the Magnificent's father Selim the Cruel for example, overthrown his father by the support of jannisaries and eventually killed him in order to make sure he won't be any future threat. This gladiator arena may seem harsh and bloody, but it also served to the realm, the rise of the Ottomans came with the 10 good emperors who were strong, smart, experienced and had will to do what's necessary. Then Ahmet the first changed this law with keeping all princes in the capital caused a bunch of inexperienced, psychologically unstable leaders who blew everything up.

This is probably the definition of Irony, but I was playing a game of Civ 5 with Venice and had a lot of trade with the Ottomans (who had founded Islam), then they asked me to help them declare war on Spain (who had founded Catholicism), and when I said no, they conquered me. When I went back to my previous save and said yes, I actually ended up winning the game by tourism/a cultural victory. (I'd only just gotten BNW so I was only playing on Prince, so it wasn't actually that hard, but I just thought that was funny.)

You're wrong about Venice not being an empire. They weren't an empire in any sense of the word for land based, sea and trade? They were indeed, there's also a word that goes with that as well, thalassocracy. Venice also wasn't a mere city-state by the time of the 15th century, they ruled over stretches of land from Crete to Cyrus, to many lands in Dalmatia as well, and onto the Italian mainland. Their government also reflected this idea of trade, sea power, and influence; through state funded and owned naval yards, the most famous being the Venetian Arsenal.

In fact, the city power starts to decrease only with the "discovery" of the Americas, just because a completely new commercial path was open and the Mediterranean sea became less important. But until that day, Venice rocked.

I thought that pepper being used on spoiled meat was a myth because anyone rich enough to buy a lot of pepper could pretty easily afford animals and a supply of fresh meat. For those who did not have a supply of fresh meat, I thought that salt and sometimes salt and vinegar were used to preserve meat.

Uthman bin affan indeed was the companion of the prophet but he is not related with the ottoman empire in any way. Actually the ottoman caliphate controlled the Levantine, North africa and parts of the Arabian peninsula only in the 16th century.
