VelocityOne Yoke Detent Mod

Спорт

Here's my DIY mod to get rid of the very abrupt centre detent on the pitch axis of the Turtle Beach VelocityOne flight yoke.
This bit of hardware is very good in most respects, but the detent makes subtle pitch adjustments (such as when on final touchdown) very difficult.
It's quite simple, just a question of unscrewing the top cover and then removing two plastic shaft stops from the side shaft.
However - as per usual with these things, this is entirely at your own risk, and I accept no responsibility for any problems that may ensue if the mod is not done exactly as described, and with a reasonable level of competance.
I searched online and found various suggestions to ease the problem, but didn't see anyone else suggesting this method.
When I looked inside, I simply removed two plastic end stops on the seconday shaft. These caused each tension spring to abruptly stop pushing and then the other spring to require an initial abrupt push to start compressing it.
By just carefully removing these stops, the original springs work much better in concert, with a gradual take over of tension at the mid point.
I've also purchased one of vanDIJK's clever shaft supports, a printed plastic assemby that supports the yoke tube underneath where it emerges from the front of the casing. I'm confident that it will improve things even more, since the yoke also moves much more freely when lifted slightly, rather than dragging downwards with the weight of one's hands.

    Cheers for the video. I don’t have this yoke but the low end quality of it and having to do mods to improve it reminds me so much of the Saitek/Logitech which I had. Never again will I ever buy the cheap stuff, it’s simply not worth it for the money and you end up paying more in the long run by replacing them with something much better straight off the bat. FFB is in my near future and I can’t wait to not have to deal with rubbish springs, overly strong centre detents that don’t move with trimming the aircraft and stiction.

    I was at the flight sim expo in Las Vegas last week and there were a number of Velocity One flight yokes set up and I noticed they did not have the strong detent or the stickiness that is present in the older models. I believe they must have made some improvements to the design. I have the 3D printed support rollers on mine and they do work as well. About a year ago I tried to do a mod similar to yours but rather than remove the washers I used string tie to collapse two coils of the spring effectively making it slightly shorter and weaker.

    Brilliant, well done. This is an issue with controlling the aircraft during landing so making this mod is a great improvement. Thank you!

    The thing about this is that on a real plane, the yoke will tend to want to center the faster you're flying. It's like a natural detent. The wind over the elevators makes them want to go neutral at high speeds. During landing it's much less of an issue. If you find the tension to high to maintain a certain position of the yoke, you could always use trim like we do in real planes. I use trim constantly. That being said.....I have this on order so you might be right and this could be a great mod...I will see what it feels like but I'll bet even without the mod it's going to be an enormous improvement over my old CH Yoke and Rudder pedals!

    Very well put together video and clearly explained. Thank you. That 'detente' at the neutral point is really annoying on landing. This looks like it does the job. However, those Nyon bushes are there for a reason which is to act as a thrust bearing to prevent direct steel-to-plastic contact which is likely to wear the contact point on the travelling arm. Not only that but the collar in the nylon bushes also locates the spring ends radially so that it does not rub on the shaft. I suspect that the plastic on the travelling arm will wear and that the shaft will become scratched making the action less smooth. But time will tell. Perhaps a thin nylon washer to replace both bushes would be a possibility to prevent steel-plastic contact whilst not reducing the improved smoothness allbeit that the potential for shaft scratching / wear would still exist. Thank you for broadcasting this simple mod.

    I hear what you're saying, but the collars on the bushes are plastic anyway, and a lot thinner than the central arm, so if there's any plastic to metal wear it would occur with them anyway, (and I doubt if they're available as spares). Also, the shaft is very hard stainless steel and the spings are not (so are softer), so I don't think there will be anyscratches on the shaft from them.

    Kevin's mod arrived several weeks ago and I fitted it straight away. It has completed the transition, making the pitch axis wonderfully smooth, even when holding just one side of the yoke. I'd say it's now actually better than my Honecomb Alpha, being much lighter, wnd with no centre detent at all.

    I have determined the stickiness has nothing to do with the detent stops centring and have undone the mod in this video - restored it to original and to day I have dumped the TB Velocity one and have ordered the honeycomb yoke and quadrant....

    Right, it's really two different problems. 1) the centering that this video address and then 2) the "stickiness" that the 3D printed mod is addressing.

  • @jamesbiggleworth4458
    @jamesbiggleworth44584 ай бұрын

    Thanks for the video but unfortunately for me the mod does diddly-squat! (no reflection on your video or effort for posting) I still get the stickiness. I am going to put back the white nylon/plastic spring locators/stops without the black rubber/foam spaces and see how that goes. Of utmost importance is the smoothness of the control! All Turtle Beach can say it that it frees up with use..... I have been using it now for 150 hours of flying by hand and not autopilot, and it is just as sticky as it was new. So how much use does it take to free up - never perhaps. I do not mind the detent as such it is the stickiness where you are trying to finesse a landing by pulling back against the tension which then suddenly lets go and moves too far and the nose of the aircraft goes way up and buggers up the landing! This relatively expensive yoke is crap. I do hope the Honeycomb brand of yoke goes back into production and once again becomes available because I will be dumping the Velocity one yoke and getting the Honeycomb as soon as I can. I suppose if I had a 3D printer I could design and print brackets to hold small bearings inside for the shaft to roll on - I am aware of the ghastly mod to put bearings on the out side of the box.

  • @ShorebasePaul

    @ShorebasePaul

    4 ай бұрын

    Coincidentally, I have now also fitted VanDeik's "Ghastly Mod" of the bracket outside of the box with the rubber tyred roller bearings supporting the yoke shaft underneath as it exits the front plastic collar. I have to say that it now works brilliantly. Now that the "sag", caused by the hands resting on the grips and weighting it down slightly is now fully supported by the roller bearings, so that the shaft moves in and out as smoothly as any other yoke that I posess, (an Alpha XPC, a Macbare, and even my Brunner CLS-E !). The combination of his bracket and my removal of the spring stops has made the pitch axis perfectly smooth, with a gradual transition of forward to backward resistance. The roll axis still has a very distinct centre detent, but that is much easier to live with. I agree completely that the standard factory performance of the VelocityOne yoke is almost unusable in respect of the awful pitch axis binding, making final approach and flaring very unpleasant. Amazing really, considering how much effort they've put into the rest of it. It's a similar story (IMHO) with their VelocityOne Joystick too, I find that excellent, in all but one respect, the ridiculously stiff centre detent. Luckilly though, I found a video here on KZread where the Guy explains a very simople mod of opening the base and either cutting the coil spring or replacing it with a weaker one, (which I did), and that too, is now my best all in one "portable" joystick. (I also have a Virpil and a Rhino FF, which are in a different league altogether, but the VelocityOne is much more compact for portable use.
