If its not obvious by some of my replies to people's comments, I 100% prefer Z's portrayal of this scene. Vegeta is my all time favorite character, and imo Z shows EXACTLY why Vegeta does what he does, and is the way he is. Some say show don't tell, but I love the emotion Vegeta shows in Z, and This is one of my favorite scenes in all of Dragonball.

I don't see how anyone can think Z has better voice acting. Especially on the Frieza saga where they almost sound robotic. Gohan and Frieza sound like chain smokers in Z as opposed to Gohan sounding like a kid, and Friza sounding menacing and entitled.

IGothamGhostI Agreed. How anyone says Z had good voice acting is beyond me. The acting feels forced. Especially when you have the actors on record testifying their epic fails with the Z dub and how much more passionate they are with their Kai performance. How exactly does the Z dub portray Vegeta better when the purpose of Kai is to follow the Japanese version and manga closely. Now don’t get me wrong. The Z dub was SOMEWHAT more accurate to the scripts in Buu arc. But the saiyan saga to cell saga of Z was an utter mess all around. Kai nails it from beginning to end regardless of opinion.

The worst humiliation hadn't come to Vegeta yet, it was when Goku said that he didn't go SSJ3 against him because he was only gonna use it when he actually needed it 💀

Actually the fight is a plot hole for SSJ3. Goku WAS fighting full power here, as SSJ3 was only created later due to people not really liking the Buu saga that much. At the time of this battle SSJ3 wasn't even conceptualized, and they simply patched things later with Goku hiding it, however it's actually because Goku was never supposed to have it.

Ssj3 wasn't supposed to be canon, they just forced the transformation into the plot since the people weren't at all that interested in the buu saga, so they needed something badass to get the views they wanted for the show.

No, he didn’t go ssj3 against him because not only would he more than likely not have defeated vegeta but he would’ve lost ALL his energy too. Vegeta lasted longer against buu than anyone would’ve thought in his base form. Ssj3 Goku would run out of energy before killing him or even winning. I’m the end vegeta still won that fight.

Well, it goes a little more in depth then Vegeta simply being mad. Not every character needs to portray there frustration through words. But, I can see what you’re saying. While I will mainly prefer KAI since it’s what I grew up on, the dialogue and emotions feel more efficient, and ALOT less filler. But, I will say that Z had scenes where they are on par or even better then KAI at times

That is the point. Vegeta is full of ego and jealousy that someone could surpass him who was born lesser to him. He only sees value in power. But later when he sacrifices himself, he realises that strength is not the most important thing in his life. His conflict doesn't need to be vocalised in the scene, as it is evident throughout the entire saga that he doubts what he is doing as he progresses forward.

Vegeta’s narration in Z really sells the scene, specifically when recounting the Namek and cell sagas.

It’s not the reality of how truly feels. It does an extremely poor job of conveying his feelings to the audience. In turn, the imperceptive audience has a false out take on vegetas character. They don’t have grasp for who he is. (It could also have a bad influence on people that look up to vegeta, because they would take after these bad thoughts. Not that I give a shit about this because of someone were to abide and follow these thoughts just because they liked a character priorly is just an idiot anyway, and would be degenerate regardless who they follow or if they follow anyone. Take note of the last sentence in this piece. Make sure your not that person.

Vegeta is my favorite character but I didnt like him much in Kai. In Z his speeches sounded more... idk, prideful and hurt where as kai he just always comes off arrogant. Z was the perfect ammount of prideful arrogance and a bit of shame, whereas kai I just feel he sounds more.. entitled, arrogant and bitchy I guess?

Mr Omnipotent The old Funimation dub for Z changed dialogue to make Goku act more heroic and added unnecessary lines that were never there for most scenes. It was incredibly inaccurate Kai fixes all that and more

Interesting one, because in Z, Vegeta's much longer rant can be seen as filler and wasting time. But Vegeta waxing poetic about the past also does a much better job at doubling down on his pride and bitterness. This makes his moment of sacrifice hit so much harder. When he lets go of the grudge against Goku for all those years so that he can save the family he has come to love.

Z pumped you up as a viewer. you felt your own adrenaline pumping while you watched it. with kai you sometimes fall asleep and the fights happens too fast. (good for weekly viewing but on a binge watch it's just a blur in retrospect)

Also when he says about "the place that he was raised to believe as his royal birthright" kinda hits different when Goku tries to convince him to use the Potara Earrings and Goku says "we can't do that if we're so caught up in our old birthrights to see what is right in in front of us"

Z takes it. The extra dialogue, the hypocrisy of Vegeta (Blaming Goku for killing Frieza, whilst begging him to do it as his dying wish), the insults. It felt better in the original.

"Imagine my added shame, when it was you, and not me, who avenged our people by defeating Frieza. You, who were the first to achieve the pinnacle of our race. The first in 1000 years to take a place among the Super Saiyans of legend. A place that I had been raised to believe was my royal birth right" Yeah this part definitely needed the dialogue, which for some odd reason Kai skipped out on. The words Vegeta spoke here hit me close to home. Because you finally realize how much Goku one ups Vegeta for no reason, when Vegeta has the will of a god.

I will say that some people do prefer the one-liners of Z instead of kai, but the voice acting for most characters definitely improved. Personally I still prefer Kai though due to the delivery of thoughts in the dialogue and how it seems to balance details and pithy near perfectly.

The average viewer wouldnt understand why the flashbacks are being shown in kai, they'll simply think "oh cool flashbacks". In Z, Vegetas speech tells the viewer why they're being shown because each time Goku upped him, his hatred and jealousy accumulated. Z obviously did a better job here instead of the lazy writing they did in Kai

Well, they are both good scenes. The original felt like it had more emotion to it, but not saying anything at all says a lot. You feel a different emotion when you watch the flashbacks in Kai. Since there is no dialogue, the viewer has to put himself in Vegeta's place and that carriers a certain impact. I like them both to be honest.

I think with Kai it puts you in a place that makes it easy to consider Vegeta is pulling from his negative thoughts in part due to Babadi's magic. The DBZ one is a bit long, but it paints a relatable picture to a character we've seen had a lot to deal with. He also really sounds hurt the entire time.

I. Michel original soundtrack literally ruins it. It’s too loud plus it ruins the dialogue and the fight. Its too simplistic and boring overall. Kai wins in terms of animation and voice acting, both in sub and in dub. The original is for boomers who lost their sense of seeing and hearing. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks

I went in the reverse of this. As a kid I was team Vegeta but now rewatching the series as an adult, I've certainly gravited more towards Goku, as Vegeta did a lot of questionable sh1t that he honestly shouldn't have gotten a pass for in the long run.

There is actually quite a few where Z clearly hands down beats the Kai version an example being where Goku is trying to convince Vegeta to use the potara to fuse with him

Dragon Ball Z was ahead of its time. Vegeta was always so on-character, his dialogue was fucking marvellous

As much as I adore Kai's portrayal of Dbz in general, I think this seen could have done better if they focused on certain lines they carried out. For instance, in the Z cut, Vegeta hits Goku as he tells him that he doesn't know what humiliation is. Certain aspects like that shows Vegeta's frustration and really brings out the emotion that Vegeta feels. And with Chris Sabbat having time to master it in Kai, I can most definitely bet that if they would pay attention to, the little details, they would have a better scene. But hey! That's just my opinion.

Wish they kept Vegeta's speech in Kai because I personally love his voice in Kai than the Z! Then again, I was grown up with Kai so that's probably why I like Kai more in terms of voices than the original 😔😔

i might be the in minority here but I like Kai better. -The pacing of the dialogue and action on screen lines up in a clever way. like having vegeta say “me!” as it cuts to him gut checking goku. and holding of on him saying clown so that when he does finally kick him it’s more impactful because that tension gets to build up for a few second longer. -Vegeta seems more complex compared to Z because he also seems to be a bit more articulate too, He purposefully asked goku an open ended question to illicit a prideful response. “stinks of pride, doesn’t it” is 10x more clever than anything vegeta said in this scene in z. I always liked Kai vegeta more because Vegeta always seemed more present and less volatile in fights when he’s angry. -The silence of the flashbacks grants a more flexible interpretation because it leaves it to us to translate how those scenes relate to the present moment and primes us to really pay attention to what he says next. Besides i’m a sucker for great visual storytelling. A lot of shows just do talky-talky and leaves a lot to be desired in the visual department.

Just imagine Raditz comes back outside of games and other spin-offs seeking revenge on Vegeta for sending him off to Earth insults Vegeta and what not finally seeing Vegeta in SSJ3 and insults Raditz for being weak but Raditz comes out in SSJ3 and is mastered unlike Vegeta’s because of the tail puts him in such restraints giving Vegeta a big speech and than Vegeta frees himself with SSGSS just about when Raditz is about to do the killing blows than they both fight destroying small towns and stuff causing earthquakes than Raditz switches to SSGSS.

You know, I always hear that Kai has the superior script but it doesn't really show here. Also i think chris sabat was at the top of his game in the buu saga for z. I can hear his age in Kai sadly

I think it helps in Z's favor that Buu Saga was around the time when the English cast more or less solidified their abilities as voice actors. Yu Yu Hakusho's dub was airing around the same time as the Buu Saga, and that anime also showcases the cast's improved abilities since the early Z days. So while Kai's script may be more accurate, the talent of the voice work for late DBZ/GT and Kai as a whole is more or less the same.

Kai didn't do the Buu Saga that well IMO, but they definitely did the Saiyan Saga, Namek Saga, and Cell Saga better than Z Buu saga will always have the falconer track in my head

Z shows more of Vegeta's hatred over being a failure and being humiliated

Vegeta’s hatred toward Goku was really deep, I feel like they should’ve put more light on that. It would’ve made their rivalry so much better.

Yeaaaa the original holds the real meaning of how Vegeta felt and his speeches of being underpowered.

I'm usually not a big fan of anime, especially dubs, adding dialogue, but here, it definitely added to the scene by allowing Vegeta to go into EXCRUCIATING detail to express just how much Goku has wounded his pride and how much of a grudge he's holding because of it. Kai might be more accurate to the source material, but for Majin Vegeta monologues, I prefer the Z dub more than Kai or the original Japanese versions. And that's only partially because of Vegeta burning Gohan by straight up telling him that he's not a warrior.

The original funimation dub funnily enough feels like it understand vegetas character more. The sub and Kai make his feel like a child who didn’t get what he wanted but the dub really helps you understand that a once proud warrior who used to conquer entire planters an civilizations on a daily basis now has the most exciting part of his day be a visit to Walmart for groceries.

Kai is good here too though tbh. I feel like people miss the point that Vegeta is all about his pride and his internal conflict doesn't need to be vocalised, as it is evident through his mannerisms and actions. He cannot stand being surpassed by someone he perceives as lesser than him. But later he comes to accept it and realise there are more important things than just power. Z is better due the few lines that really sell it on showing his ego better. But if you watch the entire Kai arc, I feel like it doesn't need to be spoken about how he feels. You can just tell it. The silence shows how he feels.

This is why I just can't bring myself to finish watching kai

Kai has better acting, visuals, script, and (subjectively) a better score than English Z, although Japanese Z is the best for music. It's nostalgia, isn't it. I don't blame you for liking it more than Kai because of that, I understand, but you have to at least see where it was obviously improved and appreciate it, instead of insulting the actors who actually had experience in this dub.

That sprinkled in "YOU FOOL" from Goku in the flashback showcase is very nice.

You know I just kind of realized that this scene is actually part of one of those episodes where the characters remember what they went through and the series so far. Never thought of it like that and I'm sure not very many people have but that's kind of exactly what this is disguised as a really really good episode.

No doubt the original is better because Vegeta tells how he’s been feeling years past and at this point in time. His commentary during the cutscenes of Gokus success and failure really resonates with me.

Kai comes off more like Vegeta was forced to regress to his past, which I get was the point. The original makes it sound more like he's still in control but Babidi was the push he needed to finally air the grievances he's held onto for years.

This is one of those moments where adaptation soars over the original material. For me Z will always be the true interpretation of these moments.

Both versions are awesome but DBZ will always be my favorite overall

Absolutely no contest English dub as it aired on Toonami was far superior in every epic speech Vegeta ever gave and pretty much every single other way the main point being that the overall experience is much more powerful when delivered in such a fashion It was done so well that I can't even take most of the dialogue in the video games seriously except for in the first Dragon Ball Z Budokai and legacy of goku 2 and buus fury text

Z had so much cringey dialogue in the frieza and saiyan saga that needed to be changed, and kai did a great job with that, but they definitely changed something that didn't need to be changed with the buu sagas dialogue :[

Vegeta is a royal. He thought he was owed the universe. Plus he is a reformed villain. It makes sense that he monologues.
