#001 It's funny, back in Z when Vegeta was introduced to us. Most of us were rather annoyed (albeit a little intimidated) of Vegeta blathering about him being the "Prince of Saiyans this and that". But if/when Vegeta does defeat Moro and Moro were to go for the typical villian line "How were you able to defeat me?" If Vegeta were to say "Because I am the Prince of Saiyans" but says it in a a way that gives a sense of heroic yet badass resolve, Vegeta fans will blow the roof of their houses! "Sometimes the best way to hit your target is to not hit the target at all" ~ Fuzzybrows

Well, can't argue with that, because Goku isn't trying to be a hero, he is literally just a guy that wants to fight

@Waveshocker Sigma They haven't forgotten it, it's just that despite this people treat him as being this paragon of virtue when the guy has no sense of adult responsibility whatsoever. They instead try to twist his intriguing character flaws into positives, because they can't stomach the idea that the "hero" might just be an imperfect guy who's made a ton of mistakes.

@Waveshocker Sigma I am not going to lie, when I grew up watching Dragon Ball, I always thought Goku was a righteous hero, but as I was getting older and rewatched the series in the original Japanese dub, I noticed that he was completely different from what I grew up with. I was actually okay with it because it made a lot more sense if you watched the original

@@craigpeoples9883 That is what I can always appreciate about Goku. He doesn't need to be a Hero like Jiren, or Superman or anyone else. As long as he will defend or save the planet when it is needed, he can do whatever he wants. I do wish that his character development was more on the line of his actions and learning from the consequences of his desire the fight strong opponents. That is all I want from Goku now, that he learns from those specific mistakes

MasakoX It feels like Goku has a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it“ mindset when it comes to defeating his enemies, and I feel like that’s why he’s getting more and more frustrated when fighting Moro, because he was using an outdated way going about things and he, like all of us, do not like change.

Goku in Z struck a balance between selfless defender and enthusiastic martial artist. Everyone around Goku in Z trusted his judgement and insight as much as they trusted his strength, and instead of just throwing Goku at the problem like a mindless tool, they constantly asked “what does Goku think about the situation?” Super has portrayed Goku like a hedonistic, self-absorbed fighter and nothing more. Reducing him in this way and simplifying his motivations has kept him easy to write for, but has kneecapped his personality. Goku’s desire to constantly fight and grow was a compelling aspect of his character when it was girded with his innate sense of right and respect for life, because it set boundaries that he wouldn’t cross and showed you when he would stop taking a matter as a exhibition match and regard it as what it was, him trying to save the world. Whenever Goku would butt up against these boundaries and you would see that shift in his behavior and tone, it told you a lot about him and how, as much as he deeply loved the unmolested, mono y mono way of resolving things, there was a line. Cross that line, and Goku will do anything he can to succeed because it has suddenly become more than a match. I think this is one of the reasons people still love the Goku Black arc despite its flaws; Goku gets serious once he goes to the future and never tries to reduce the situation to a mere fight. He readily recognizes the weight of the situation, treats it accordingly, and tries to come up with solutions. He’s not as insightful or illuminating as he would have been in Z, but it’s still a pleasant shift for him that showed Goku not being monotone. Super seems to have distaste for the idea of portraying Goku as competent and selfless, even with his selfish fighting indulgences that would accompany this portrayal in Z. When Goku can only be about one thing, it becomes very hard to root for him like we used to do.

This is a brilliant comment! I have been saying this for quite a while. People remembered Goku as being more heroic because..... he always was heroic. Sure he loved fighting but he never let that get in the way of doing what was ultimately right. Goku, in the original manga was a hero, a fighting genius and pretty wise when he had to be. Super has perpetuated this myth that Goku was an idiot, meathead that only cares about fighting. That was not the Goku I grew up with. Even when you look at this video, a few things stood out. For one, according to Super, Vegeta somehow became more humble than Goku. Goku always was willing to learn from others. All of his techniques come from some master. Super also perpetuates this idea that Goku only fought with his brawn and never his brain. Goku always used to think outside the box in his old fights. If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of Super loll.

@@pedroj3432 personally I think that much of the reason Vegeta doesn't get the win is more due to monetary reasons. Hear me out. Apparently, from what I've heard, Vegeta is far more liked in western culture like America rather then in Japan. The east (I don't mean to discriminate if I am wrong please inform me) loves Goku, and let's face it, that's where the story is being made. Maybe Akira is afraid of losing fans, if he gives the win to Vegeta rather then Goku for once.

Vegeta and Goku are a fine example of what people like to cheer for and why. People cheer for Goku because he's already the hero and super cool. People cheer for Vegeta because he's flawed and has to go on a personal journey to become the hero. It's (somewhat ironically since the dub voice of Vegeta also voices dub All Might) kinda like All Might and Endeavor in My Hero Academia. All Might is already the hero, Endeavor is a flawed as hell person that lost his way who (due to goings on) has to find that way again and become the hero and make up for his huge mistakes. Goku's the power fantasy, Vegeta's the relatable and interesting guy.

Vegeta's character arc as a whole really inspired me growing up. He taught me that anything worth doing is never easy. That the best place to be is when people underestimate you. Why? So you can turn that around on them. 36 now and to this day I'm still pushing myself because of what I learned. Thank you Prince Vegeta for the greatest life lesson that I could ever learn.

I never really liked Goku. When it came to DBZ I always liked the side characters better like Vegita, Piccolo, and Gohan. They kept me reading the manga.

@@andymoore8835 Actually no, it's very accurate. Don't forget, Goku didn't become heroic naturally he hit his head. In a very real way goku being a good guy is a mental defect. Hell, Vegeta is considered more heroic because he became that way naturally not by hitting his head or being mind controlled to do so but raw and pure character development.

Goku doesn’t SAY he’s a hero of justice, but actions speak louder than words and Gokus actions definitely show he is one. He had no reason to deal with Zamasu as he’s literally immortal, but wanted to help Trunks for the sake of him being Trunks.

Goku didn't say he wasn't much of a hero. What he said is that he doesn't go out of his way to be one.

I want Vegetas version of the I am speech that's focussed on him exclaiming he is the defender of the weak. I also want it to be a rare moment of transparency from Vegeta where he admits he loves his family, friends, and the planet he has come to call home. I think it would be an amazing and impactful moment that would be the cherry on top of Vegetas character development.

That entire premise hasn't been true for the better part of three decades. Toriyama has stated in multiple interviews over the last 10 years that Vegeta has become one of his favorite characters, though obviously Goku will always be his favorite - if for no other reason than the fact he's by design the easiest character for a lazy writer to write.

I didn't like Vegeta in season 4 of Z, but I really liked him in freeza saga and buu saga. It's like in season 4 he totally changed and went from a practical ruthless badie to a whiny impulsive d-bag, it's more and more weird the more I look back on it.

@@StanTheBland everyone's entitled to their favorite characters. Mine's the Z-era Future Trunks because had a compassionate heart and never gave up no matter how hopeless things got; he also never let his pride get in the way of him ending a threat quickly and efficiently before it became too powerful. That said, I really didn't mind Goku prior to Super, but he's never been a favorite character of mine for the exact reasons that you like him. I always prefer Dragon Ball when it's serious, and Goku has always been hit or miss with that due to his personality. In the Super era, he's just unbearable. I prefer Vegeta every single time over Goku in that case.

One thing I find interesting is the conversation about going to hell between Moro and Vegeta. He still sees himself as a villain, that he will be going to hell when he dies. Which makes you wonder if what Piccolo says is true, if Vegeta really thinks he can wipe the slate clean or if in his head he will always be a villain regardless of him never committing another villainous act.

I like that contrast between Goku and Moro and how Moro actually both scared goku then made him angry: Moro’s not a fighter cause he’s a Warlock

Oh good we are finally really talking about this, vegeta is my favorite and in full honestly he still gets jipped whenever stuff happens he is just as strong (if not stronger) then goku but bc goku is basically the golden boy, vegeta and other characters just put on the back burner which forces everyone to either become weaker to show off goku's new form or as in the case of DBsuper weaken an already extremely powerful form to that of basically krillin, I'm looking at you SSJ god and blue

To me, the Moro arc so far feels like the difference between reading something by an author that's passionate about their characters and work versus someone that is just phoning it in for a paycheck. If Toyotarou is able to convincingly and decisively give Vegeta the win in this arc over Goku, and have the former teach the latter some humility in the process, it will cement him as the superior author of the Dragon Ball franchise going forward, at least for me. But I think that's because he's more of a "Z" style writer whereas Toriyama seems to prefer the og DB style more (which I hate).

Vegeta is more of an actual conscious character. Goku is more instinctive and naive. I honestly think Vegeta is more likely to make the better decisions.

The entire series feels like abridged. I'm pretty sure that's the point of super. Tapping into that Dragon ball z abridged love.

It feels almost like goku is slowly going towards a more happy-go-lucky version of what vegeta used to be, wanting strong challenges and being too prideful, while Vegeta is becoming what goku used to be, but with a more taciturn and calm tone.

It'll never happen in a million years, but I do think it would be a genuinely interesting plot twist if the final villain in the Dragon Ball franchise wound up being Goku himself. Maybe something like Goku eventually becomes so powerful and battlestarved that he's willing to unleash some multiversal Cthulhu monster for a good fight. The Angels and Omni King are too weak to stop him at that point, and Vegeta has to come in and put him down (hakai or otherwise) in order to avoid the entire Dragon Ball omniverse being destroyed.

@Dante Hunter uh, no, it would actually be good writing if over the course of the entire franchise the roles of Vegeta and Goku were reversed in a gradual but meaningful way which was brought about due to their very characterizations from the moment they were introduced ultimately leading them down different paths rather than a strictly "character x becomes evil/good for the sake of plot". It could only be considered a "stab in the back" because a lot of those "fans", Toriyama included, don't like seeing their favorite characters go through any meaningful change. That's why anime and cartoons in general get ridiculed as a medium for children and the immature. The world's most famous anime and cartoon franchises are more often than not ridiculed with problems like that, and as a result greatly diminish the actual artistic value of the medium as a whole and the various series which are lovingly crafted and designed by writers and production staff who aren't lazy hacks and immature fanboys that need to be spoon-fed their stories because they don't have any interest in having their characters grow up with them. It's really sad and pathetic.

It's so weird how Toriyama supposedly hates (or hated) Vegeta, but he also gets the singular best character arc in the entire series. I don't think he'll ever become The Main Hero™ as long as Toriyama has the last word, but we all know he's the best.

Its interesting that Future Trunks, Kid Trunks, Vegeta, and Bulma have grown but Son Family remains a bit stagnant.

I don’t follow Super really, so I may be wrong here. Goku has always been one of my favorite characters, preferred him over Vegeta as well. I do like to refer back to TNMark’s mention of Goku being a (positive) flat character in which the character changes the world around them, but the character doesn’t really change themselves. But from what I’ve heard Super Goku is not that great. And I don’t think Goku himself ever describes himself as a hero, but as someone who likes fighting stronger people.

Yeah you pretty much got it.

I’m always going to use Z as a good basis. Vegeta developed a little bit in Super. But they make Goku an idiot in Super. As far as development, Vegeta, out of a lot of any anime characters, has pulled off a lot more than others.

(Old) Vegeta has a bit of a problem letting enemies power up to the point of overpowering him later in a fight, and Goku is usually too merciful. Trunks is a good compromise, but his plans almost always go wrong one way or another. New vegeta is a vast improvement while still being Vegeta.

Note that, if I shout "What are you doing, Goku?" it usually isn't a bad thing. The short version is I like my Goku silly. That's the "real" Goku to me. Not sure where the serious guy came from, other than liberties taken by the dubs.

I like the idea of Vegeta taking the wheel and becoming the hero and I agree with the direction the Moro arch is going but Super is notorious for giving great build up but never really taking risks to see that build up or concept through so I'm cautiously optimistic because I do have my doubts.

I have many comments on what is said about Goku, being someone who has Pride. In the first place, he asked help to be trained as well. When he asked, it was not known to him that Merus is an Angel. Who only knew that he can teach him something. Also people forgot that Goku would have trained in Ydratt longer if he wasn't informed that Freeza is going to earth. Goku has always been caring in his own way. People from the west just like Vegeta more since his way is like how most western folks think. It's much relatable to them than Goku who is more eastern in a way. I don't think Goku's portrayal in Super was Bad. His still the same as he is when there's no threat and can sense good in people. What Super did that made an injustice is Goten. They wasted his potential.

Not to stir up trouble, but Goten never really had any potential at all anywhere outside of GT. A small Goku clone has no place in modern Dragon Ball, so until they can actually come up with a place to take his character, I'm glad he doesn't appear.

Here some waht ifs i like to share Masakox! 1. What if the grand kai was canon and used more often in dbz and dbs, perhaps replacing the elder kai? 2. What if zangya turned good? 3. What if puar was used more in series and what if she/he trained? 4. What if videl and erasa came to master roshi island in the 7 years after the cell games and they trained as hard as Goku and Vegeta? Not sure if these interest you but I continue to post this in hopes it inspires someone to do a what if lol

@@jakesstatefarm someones fanfic kind of got ideas of puar being utilized more. Sure his/her current body isn't made for combat. But imagine pushing shapeshifting abilities and utilizing ki and pushing the body she shapeshifting to beyond its limits. Puar was always better shapeshifter than oolong so wouldn't be suprising she push the bodies she mimics better too.

Well yeah Vegeta is a better hero in Super because Goku is a bigger idiot then in Z and literally just pretty much cares about fighting

@MasakoX you probably hit the nail on the head at @8:40. I think Goku felt Moro "looking back at him" when he was tracking him down, and very possibly that is the reason he hasn't been able to focus enough vs the Billy Goat. Moro got into his head, and the more thinking Goku does in battle, especially re UI the worse he comes off - the opposite for Vegeta. Speaking of Vegeta (imo) his new technique from ch61 seems to be 2 parts- 1st he lands a hit not to do damage, but to get a fine-tuned "read" of Moro's ki - which is how he could then avoid or counter most of his attacks - then the main bit, releasing the energy out of his control and body.

I've really been enjoying this arc. I'm reading (and using it for Japanese study) the manga here in Japan and I hope it gets an anime adaptation. I really wanna see OG73, Moro, and Mirus in animated form (and hopefully added to DB FighterZ)

You know piccolo should have got the ultimate state and saved gohan's ass against buutenks and kept being a badass. And another thing he would do is kick Frost's shnozes and then will humiliate him by beating the crap out of him then will announce about the poison needles

The thing with Frost is a bit weird to begin with.... Piccolo totally eclipses the power of Namek Saga 100% power Frieza by the midpoint of the Android saga, so it never made much sense to me for Frost to give him so much trouble in the first place. Logically he shouldn't be that far off from where Frieza was in power before his defeat. It strikes me as a pretty huge plot hole that Frost even had a chance *to* cheat against Piccolo in that fight, the difference in battle power, speed, instinct, battlefield awareness... literally everything should've been massively in Piccolo's favor, yet Piccolo *struggles* even before Frost actually cheats.

This is really in keeping with the ending of z as well. Vegeta is around to protect earth and goku does his own thing aka runs off to train Uub.

It's possible that we might even end up with a main protagonist Vegeta considering the fact that the series title doesn't have either of Goku's names in it. ehh probably not.

I see Vegeta Videos. I smash like. I watch. Such is life! 💪🏽

If what you're saying is true, that Goku hitting this brick wall that is Moro could provide a really neat existential crisis for him in a future arc. Do I think that will happen? I doubt it, but it could sure be interesting for Goku to encounter a foe like Moro, be disturbed by this fact that Moro doesn't care nor respect training, and could really set up a subplot in a future arc that calls Goku's raison d'etre into question. It wouldn't necessarily mean he'd have to become more heroic like Superman, but it would be a neat thing for him to be haunted by this scenario. And yes, I know, Goku is dumb, but I can speculate too, can't I? On a similar note, if Vegeta is taking the mantle of Earth's defender and is getting stronger thank Goku, then this will most definitely be a really neat thing in the future as their roles and dynamics are going to change, possibly even come into conflict, and the paradigm of both them and the show could differ in many, even drastic ways.

Buu didn't respect or care training, and he absorbed people to get stronger. Yet, Goku had no issue with him. And Black outright cheated and stole his body along with all his hardwork, something Vegeta called Black out on.

Vegeta got more character focus and moments on him in Super. Like his relationship with Cabba. It’s clear that the writers wanted to do more with him. At this point, I believe all Goku has is just serving as a living power barometer. No longer a hero, but just a guy who fights. He’s become a non-character in Super. He doesn’t grow or change. He’s just there.

And unfortunately that's by very intentional design on Toriyama's part. He said in several interviews that he doesn't like having to think too much about plot or characters, it's too stressful for him. So, the moment Dragon Ball became big enough that he was able to get out of being micromanaged by his production staff we got things like the Buu saga and Super. I think that speaks volumes by itself.

Vegeta is also a fighter, yet he's not a incompetent ass clown that will sacrifice everything just because "muh fight", "me wanna fight strong guy". Neither is Piccolo, neither was Goku himself prior to Super, regardless of what fanboys say.

Goku really needs a character change to fit in, but if he did it wouldn't work with his character, Sad.

I think your final statements are apropos, DB as a thing is evolving, at least regarding Goku and Vegeta. Vegeta is certainly the more prepared hero of the story, and ultimately is the more valuable skill as a hero. And now Super has convinced the world Goku is so foolish that so many lack the sympathy we had for him even in the Buu arc. I think we will get there again though.

goku isnt a hero, he just wants to fight... but vegeta is one he fights for his pride his family his world!

I wrote about this under someone video yesterday... so it’s good to see people feel the same about vegeta . Ultimately this fits nicely with goku leaving to train UUb . Vegeta can be the real earths champion. Goku only cares for his own power . Vegeta is so much more than power hungry . Vegeta trials are molding him to be a better king than his father .

Love ur vids but I have to disagree with you Goku still has alot of development to go like it's not like Vegeta is gonna get every win now it's just that this arc wanted Vegeta too get the win against Moro that was always going to happen but I don't think we can go as far and say just after one win and Goku's many wins the time like the god of destruction was literally about to blow up his planet Goku had too put all his morals aside and get power from someone else with a ritual that Goku hates but he realized he had too cuz he got bullied with all his transformations but he then realized what he had to and put all his morals aside to save the world so I don't think it's ok say that after one win Vegeta is the main hero now just my opinion

I remember getting pissed that Vegeta is wearing his Cell saga outfit in Super. Idk It was nice to see it go *Full body suit*--->*Less armor*------>*no armor*------>*Normal clothes*

I hope Vegeta gets to at least take part in defeating Moro, at the Ram Man just pulled a Uno reverse card on him.

I mean if you think about it Goku hasn't really trained since King Kai. All through dragon ball and the start of Z Goku willingly took up training under masters to get stronger and learn new moves. Then SSJ happened and he basically gave up and either didn't train at all or only did self training. Sure he learned a few tricks on Yardat but didn't give it the normal 110% effort he did in the past towards training. Super was basically just him fighting Whis, a super strong guy he wanted to fight and calling that "training". But actually seeking out new masters, people possibly weaker than him just doesn't happen. Nor does he invent any new technique himself pretty much ever beyond new SSJ transformations that usually happen by accident.

Depends, Goku was a hero in dbz and in Gt, always being serious whenever a threat is causing towards Earth. Dbs of course dumb him down and makes him care more about fighting than people's safety.
