these stories remind of when i first came to canada. the white and whitewash colored kids made fun of my traditional desi food and commented on the smell to the point it made me uncomfortable. luckily i didn't think too much of it. now i bring my food to the office and have no concern bringing desi finger food. some food is best with hands.

The fact that you have the courage to embrace your culture and protect your mom speaks larger and Louder volumes than those who stomp around their "This Is America. You speak English and do what I say" rhetoric .... America was Never an English speaking White Power nation! It was stolen , beaten, and tortured out from the feet and hard work of others because of manifest destiny... So go off, ma'am! Reclaim your purest identity! Show off your truest beauty and power! Ain’t nothing wrong or unsanitary about cooking or eating on the floor. I’m afro-latina and although most meals were prepped and cooked on countertops, we often ate on the floor. We’d have huge family gatherings to the point where there’s be no space to sit at the table and a lot of us just sit on the floor and eat. It’s normal!

The fact that some Americans believe that their way is the only way had ALWAYS astounded me. I spent my formative years raised Hispanic. It was my culture and Spanish/Mexican was my language. Then I HAD to learn English (toughest language around) but I was also learning Mandarin. I so prefer the cultures from other countries.

Give your mom a big hug and let her know I thoroughly enjoyed the making of traditional Kimchi and appreciate the love, sharing and hard work it takes to make, I'm sure the best Kimchi ever. Yes. I never left my shoes at the door and felt it a bother to do so until I finally had an aikido class that taught so, and formed friendships with families who follow this rule and now we have that rule in our home, too. I finally got educated! =) it is an odd thing in America how we learn to think "one way is the right way" and it is the "white man's way". I'm hoping this new generation of children who are more connected to the earth and its cultures and are re-connecting to their family traditions, or connecting to someone else's will move us further away from "one right way" and towards toward "ones way" is right. I'm glad to be on the "leave your shoes at the door" point in my life.

I appreciate everything you share with us, Joanne. You help to educate us all with your stories. Thank you. 💚 Growing up with culture clash within my own home (two cultures, one severely disrespected and disregarded), I can attest to the validity of the American “elitist ideal.” American patriotism has been twisted into a horrible, Nationalistic pride, in this last century. While it does not apply to every American, it is pervasive, even in families that do not notice the more subtle notes of it, in their midst. I feel grateful for having recognized the clash and found a way to embrace both of my cultures, while remaining guarded against the insidious, elitist ideals, of either side.

I went to Korea when I was 11 or 12 (I am 24 now) and I really loved the experience, I spent most of a month on Jeju Island and then a week in Seoul. My mother always thought it was good to introduce my siblings and I to as many different people and different ways of life as possible and I thank her for that now that I am older. I love your content and it brings tears to my eyes to hear this, I have experienced a lot of similar things growing up as 1 of 4 (2 of them being my siblings) black people in my town and the nearby town. My heart goes out to you two, sending love and hugs to you both! She sounds like an amazing woman! 🖤💜🖤

As a white american who is rather young and grew up around mainly white people, I never understood how people could hate other people of a different culture whether that be Asian or black culture and blatantly racist because it doesn't fit their 'norm'. I love learning and seeing you and your family show your culture and not backing down from the ignorance and racism thrown at you and others. You are inspiring.

Wow! That was some deep seeded racism, alright. Yo, dudes, don't you have KZread? Watch some travel shows, man. To you... I awe in your wisdom and love! What a perfect response to the ignorance that spurred those hurtful comments. I'm so humbled by you. (in EVERY video you make). I think you are an incredible teacher.. And I'm so glad you share your healing, your history, your growth, your delicious food, and your knowledge of the culture/history behind it. To your mom- your daughter is right. The traditional community she wanted to share with us is why we come to her channel. We heal from her wisdom while she nourishes our bodies and souls with her clever writing(?) / story-telling over a pot of delicious food while she teaches us how to cook. Her mesmerizing methodology calls us to the circle of humanity, where she shares, so humbly, communion with us. Thank you for sharing that circle with us, in YOUR home. I hope you'll invite us again. I love you! You know, as you were talking about this assimilation that happens in America--which has happened, oddly, since one foreigner put his foot on this soil and declared it "theirs"-- and the passing down of our mixing pot of traditions, it makes me think of my ancestors, Scots and Irish, once kings in their own lands-we only recently learned, the descendents of whom moved here, and assimilated so well, just like your mom, giving up their languages, accents, and traditions... But no daughter or son came next to save those ties or traditions or even recipes. That all faded away until "where are you from?" literally ended in "I don't know." And thus it happened. Until this story, I couldn't see how it faded away. I always have an "aha!" moment when I'm with you. Genius connection! Thanks! I love you, too! And I wish you much success on your cookbook!
