Vegan and Vegetarians Recovering from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea

I received a listener question about her moral dilemma - to leave veganism in order to improve her health and get her period back... or not. Clearly, it's a very hard decision for her to make and many others are in a similar boat. Wanting to maintain veganism throughout amenorrhea recovery is a widely shared challenge. So here is what I can tell you based on my experience with vegan and vegetarian clients.

Hmm, I've been vegan for 4.5 years and never got my BMI lower than 19, not that I was trying to. Never lost my period either. Bread, vegan butter and ice cream, peanut butter, pea protein powder, all vegan. Vegan diets do not make it any more difficult to get plenty of calories and nutrients. Unfortunately, though, scrupulosity and low self-esteem can point people toward vegan diets. If you're coming to it from a mentally unhealthy place, you'd expect unhealthy outcomes.

I’ve been vegan since 11 years old. Got my period on a vegan diet, just got it back on a vegan diet after disordered eating. The priority is to eat a variety of foods with protein, because only one source of protein won’t be enough. Also eating enough fats is super important. Things like nut butters and avocado

Did you also prioritise carbs too or just have a moderate amount at most meals?

@@ellie_strawcherry Hello! I think a missing period could be the cause of so many factors. I got my period on a vegan diet, so I don't believe being vegan could be the cause of a missing period. I believe it was from other factors. Any kind of stress could mess with your period. Undereating (which is what I was doing) puts stress on your body, so does intense exercise, and even illness. I got a few periods back after gaining weight and upping my calorie intake, as well as exercising less. I noticed that helps A LOT with getting your period. Especially focusing on protein and fats. That helped me to a certain extent, but my periods are still very irregular and my hormones are low. So I'm working on balancing my hormones to regulate my cycle. I would say maybe ask yourself why you want to become vegan; is it because you want to eat healthier or it's a form of restriction. And if you do become vegan, protein (from different sources) and fat is very important. So are carbs. Hope you will be able to get your period back! It's an awesome feeling! 😊

Having suffered from PCOS since I was 13 (I'm 29 now) and having 1-3 cycles a year at most, it was only when I went vegetarian (two years ago) and then fully vegan just under a year ago, my periods have actually doubled in frequency and are so healthy and "normal" now, whereas before they were so light for at most three days. It's still not perfect and I still have other symptoms like some excess hair growth, but it's so much better than it was, and considering I am on zero medication, I am so happy. If everything was true about needing dairy, I think my condition and cycles would have stopped completely when going fully vegan, but it's only got better for me. Hopefully it continues. Of course, everyone's situation is unique though. I hope this lady is able to do what's best for her :)

Hey! I’m not sure if I reference PCOS in this video which is different to HA, but yes it is a different issue that often requires individual management!

Yes, you're right, I was only commenting on the need for dairy part/animal proteins comments in the video. I was definitely really worried the vegan lifestyle would make my symptoms for PCOS even worse, especially because a low-carb diet is often recommended as the best diet type for PCOS and not something I've explored yet. But the "general" vegan diet of eating a variety of plant foods -and some processed (hoping to reduce this even more in the future) is working well for me - so far! :)

I appreciate your sharing of knowledge here, however, what makes you think “we’ll end the human population” without meat?

Oooh haha ok I found it, yep, I said that. Way to shake the tree. So the context for me and MY personal perspective is that I work in fertility and I am seeing a lot of women struggling to get pregnant as vegetarian. While we can figure it out and do figure it out for women who are serious (we almost always introduce SOME meat) we have to make a lot of changes that are hard work to maintain. In the video I talk about making your mess your message and advocating for change - at the rate that food quality is going and the education around eating is going, I feel like the push for fertility rates to increase if we are all moving away from animal products is a massive uphill battle. I don’t think it’s impossible and I’m not particularly outspoken on this, but I just personally struggle to see the potential based on the perspective that I see in my practice - which is fair. This is my perspective. I think it’s an interesting conversation for sure and would be open to changing that perspective as I see better results in practice.

Hi! I stumbled across this video in my recommendations. I was interested in this as I have been veggie for many years. I'm struggling with your conclusions though in this case - the person in the email / comment clearly stated their long struggle with an eating disorder and high stress levels,, though your conclusion is that the vegan diet was the part that harmed her? tricky.

Hey! Mmm solid point solid point. Most of the answers to my weekly Q&A typically are like “hey, you’re asking XYZ but CLEARLY the issue has more to do with your overall relationship with food, body, exercise”. With vegan and vegetarian women with amenorrhea, it can be REALLY hard to help people maintain that diet and recover without blurring the lines. Often times (definitely not always) the veganism is a tool used to maintain restriction, and my followers are often on a journey of discovering which one is them. If you go through my other videos, you would likely see I generally aim to make others aware of their bias and unhelpful behaviours more so than the vegetarianism. I’ve seen plenty of vegetarians recover, so it’s specific and nuanced for SURE.

I lost my period on a vegan diet. I too went vegan for ethical reasons, i.e. to cause less harm. I then was at a point where i was suffering, and the thought, my suffering matters too, helped me transition back to an inclusive diet. If it hadn't helped, I could have gone back to veganism, but it did and i would NEVER go back 🙂Also, living as a vegan in a non-vegan world is a tremendous stressor as well...
