The Orthodox memorial chant "Vechnaya pamyat'" (Eternal Memory / Memory Eternal) is performed by the Yale Russian Chorus Alumni at Battell Chapel of Yale University for departed comrades.

❗️ Interesting: remembering departed comrades, we sing the chant "Vechnaya pamyat'" (Eternal Memory) together for them-this is our special tradition. Often this happens when Chorus members come from all over the world for a major concert, or when there is a memorial service attended by many alumni, we sing it there as well.

Vechnaya pamyat' (Eternal Memory / Memory Eternal) is a chant used in Orthodox worship for the solemn commemoration of the departed. It is the liturgical counterpart to the Western Rite prayer "Eternal Rest".
Initially, this expression was used to glorify prominent persons living or deceased. The origin of this practice is attributed to the Hellenistic period. In Christianity it was used in the same sense, but already in relation to the deceased. At first it referred to churchmen, and then to emperors. In later practice, the chant became part of the memorial service (Panikhida) for any deceased. "Vechnaya pamyat'" also chanted at the end of services on Saturdays of the Dead, though not for an individual, but for all of the faithful departed. It is sung three times according to the following scheme:
Deacon: In a blessed falling asleep, grant, O Lord, eternal rest unto Thy departed servants (names) and make them memory to be eternal!
Choir: Eternal Memory! Eternal Memory! Eternal Memory!

The Yale Russian Chorus is the oldest singing group in the New World dedicated to the music of Russia and nearby countries. The YRC was founded 1953 at the height of the Cold War. Founders: Denis Mickiewicz and George Litton.
Singers join while students at Yale, and many stay active throughout their lives. Every year or so we hold a major concert in which students and alumni sing together. Many alumni also join the students on tours to Russia.
Without a doubt, each of us had our own motivation to join the Russian choir. But we offer you a quote from one of the members of our choir, which unites us to some extent and explains a little the meaning of the choir in our lives: "Singing the music of the YRC in the style we sang it, was an antidote to the intellectualism that got many of us into Yale in the first place, but that could be so restrictive to the heart and spirit".
The singers are not Russians, or emigrants from Russia, but are students and former students who share a passion for the music and a belief in the power of music to build connections between people of different countries.

We express our deepest sympathy to the victims and their families. We publish this on Western Good Friday, the most somber day of the liturgical year. This evening in church we will be singing the Stabat mater, in which Mary grieves for the death of her Son on the cross. Our hearts go out to all who have lost their loved ones in these tragic events. Мы публикуем это в западную Страстную пятницу, самый мрачный день литургического года.
