This wasn't on Matt. This literally happened because the PCs were being careless and Vex's PC rolled a 1 on an incredibly important saving throw. This wasn't scripted, it just happened. And that's part of why these sorts of stories are so engaging: almost anything can happen regardless of the "rules" of Hollywood.

The moment Matt asked Laura to clarify that she was reduced to 0 hit points by that trap, the look of horror on her face was almost immediate. She knew that that question meant, and it was absolutely heart wrenching.

Vex's death is a massive shock, but also echoes through the whole campaign going forwards. Matt Mercer is very good at making death matter in D&D, which is something that D&D often suffers from because resurrection is so relatively easy for higher level parties. He has some homebrew rules that make resurrection be not 100%, but also he builds it into the story and so do the players. The deaths in Critical Role always felt like big things, and they always had lasting effects, whether anyone was able to succeed in resurrecting the character or not. Also, I did have a set of dice within reach while watching this. They are going to dice jail, though, because I rolled a 6. I also failed my dex save and took 58 necrotic damage and insta died with Vex. RIP me, I guess.

Even if they don't have bidets, that was a joke Travis made that stuck SO HARD that it's how critters still welcome each other on almost all chat boards or even in person to this day years later. And we lived through this trauma years ago, but it's still traumatic to see her death again.

@@CallistoTheWarriorQueen They actually played homage to that in the show, just as Percy is reaching for the armor Vex says that they should wait for her brother to check. I think she did roll in the stream, Laura never argued it so must have been so low she knew it wouldn't have been high enough to find it. Also its a magic trap and not a mechanical one so probably a high DC on the trap to find it. Tho Trinket missed his dex save too and was hit by it too just had enough HP to survive, I guess that would have taken away from her getting hit and with the Raven Queen stalking Vax and the foreshadowing and its in her temple, I think it was better how it happens in the show.

I think I could've handled Vax crying. I've had time to prepared. But then they showed me crying. BABY. Vax. That's jut not fair. And cutting back and forth between him sobbing as a kid and sobbing as an adult, both times because Vex left him?? How tf is anyone supposed to stay dry eyed with that?

It's worth noting that Grog getting a beard is a really really big deal for Grog since Goliaths (being distantly related to Stone Giants) are normally hairless and thus incapable of growing beards. In the campaign Matt worked resurrections a little differently than most games. Resurrections required a skill challenge as part of a ritual to try and coax the soul to return. Basically each character participating in the ritual (up to 3 people) would make their appeal/sacrifice to the soul and their success or failure would adjust the DC of the roll to try and bring the person back. If the roll failed then the character suffers permadeath.

Ah that explains it. Grog is completely hairless. None of his chest, forearms or head. No wonder he was so excited over growing a beard Btw. I'm hoping that belt does more than grow a beard. I hope it doubles his strength or something.

IIRC, in the game, it was a Belt of the Dwarvenkind -- gave him a Constitution bonus; it also allowed him to read/write Dwarvish, if he could read or write.

Ripley is in Season 1. She's the woman they save in the briarwood dungeon who ends up running away when they are at the ziggurat. In case you guys forgot.

She took 58 necrotic damage which took her below 0, resulting in instant death. She was in middle of investigation check when Percy touched it, he rolled successful dex save and she didnt though.

The old man at the end of episode 2 who looks like Bumi from Last Airbender is Victor, a Black Powder Merchant that Matt made on the spot (since he didn't expect Percy's actor Talesin to have his character look for black powder at the time) in a session prior to even the Briarwood Arc in the original campaign. He became an instant fan favorite even though he only appeared in 3 episodes scattered throughout the campaign. I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "How do you still have more secrets from people?" at 11:36 when Percy was not the only person of the group to see Dr. Ripley leave during the final fight with the Briarwoods at the Zippertwat.

I can see why Percy didn't say anything. He was trying to let it go, especially with what was going on in the world.

"Do not go far from me" was originally said when they were all reeling from the Chroma Conclave attack. They really expanded on its history.

I believe the party was around level 13 here (they got there 4 sessions earlier, apart from Scanlan who leveled up to 13 in the next session), so had a lot of options. However the dice were crappy and Vex was hit with an instant-death-if-it-gets-you-to-zero-HP trap after a big fight (bigger then the one in episode 3 here). Plus Pike (who was only level 11 at the time) was also not in this session, so they had to look elsewhere for resurrections, hence the sudden shock of Vex going down and the despair at the lack of resources to bring her back. Saying more would be spoilers for the next episodes so I'll leave it there.

They didn’t wait for Vax to check for traps on that tomb, then Vex rolled a 1 on the Dex save (Percy successfully saved). It did 66 necrotic damage, with the bonus effect of instantly killing if the damage dropped the character to 0, no death saves. Nasty stuff, fitting the name Deathwalker’s Ward of the Matron of Ravens.

Pretty sure the entire internet wants to see Clarus put together a Zahra cosplay now. 😁

Kash is played by Wil Friedel, he did the voice of Ron Possible in the Kim Possible show, and played Eric Matthews on Boy Meets world. And Sexy girl is played by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, she is the voice director of Legend of Vox Machina, as well as voice director on a lot of stuff. They actually played these characters in the campaign stream. They were guest players, during this session Ashley was actually not there. Don't remember of Pike was played by Matt or not, but Ashley wasn't there, and I think this was after one of the other players had left so there was room at the table. Wil Wheaton guest played too, I think they have skipped over where he was tho.... I am hopping they put him in somewhere else tho, I would love to see how they make reference to the Will Wheaton Dice Curse in the show lol

Mercer made the right call. Let the dice fall where they may.

Remember that some spells, traps, etc. If you fail the saving throw you skip death saving throws and go straight to death and some things even require very high spells to bring them back.

Referring to 11:30 - nope, no new Percy backstory there, just memory lapses on most reactors' part. Ripley was in Season 1, Episode 10. Having previously collaborated with the Briarwoods, she was the one-handed woman Vox Machina encountered under Whitestone Castle. Percy was forced to let her leave unharmed towards the end of the episode because he didn't want to give away his position by shooting her. So the character at the end of episode 2 is an iconic character from campaign 1 known as Victor the black powder salesman. I highly suggest looking up his highlights from campaign 1 or at least his intro. This is a very fast forward version of him, but he very much has Bumi vibes and was the first time Matt showed off this truly crazy character and it was gold the level of improv he pulled off from the insane scenarios and questions players asked this npc.

Of course, they had to have THAT moment happen in episode 3, so we all have to wait a full week to sit, stress, and hope. By the way, I rolled an 18.

Did yall grow up with Boy Meets World? Because Kashaw, the guy flirting with keyleth, is voiced by the actor that played Eric Matthew's. Oh and hes also Duncan from My Date with the President's Daughter. Growing up he was one of my favorite actors. So when he guest starred during C1 i was thrilled. And i was so happy to hear hed obviously voice his character when he shows up in the aninated series. Will Friedle is a god damn G.

its episode 44 in the campaign so Vax, Vex, Grog and Keyleith are level 13, Percy and Scanlan are level 12 (they get level 13 next Episode) and Pike is Level 11 as she is not there very often she only reaches level 13 at level 58 and stays 1-2 level behind each other player for the rest of the game

It was a running gag where the party would take all of Matt Mercer's location names and twist the names into something perverted.

This moment was intense but happened just as fast as that in the game, was so shocking and no one was ready for it. Can't wait to see u guys react to the next episode

There's a spell for that, but Matt Mercer uses homebrew rules that make ressurection more complicated and has a legitimate chance of failure. This moment, and what happens immediately after, has significant ramifications for the rest of the campaign.

Without any spoilers... the mantle of the raven queen seemed to have been trapped. But not just some physical trap. Some magical traps can reduce a character to zero instantly if they fail their save. When vax sees his sister they showed pike fail to heal her. So shes dead dead. Like dropped to zero and lost all 3 saving throws instantly. Not only did she fall unconscious, but they made a point to show the life leave her eyes.

He's done a ton of other stuff, but the long haired guy in the Slayers Take is Eric Mathews from Boy Meets World!!! aka Mr. Plays With Squirrels

😂😂😂 I took a drink at the wrong moment and almost choked at "hot lady and cash man"😂😂😂

I knew that dice were eldritch beings, but I didn't realize that Matt was their personification of them, that makes so much sense. The "bidet" moment happened exactly like that on the stream. Yes, that is the meme. They confirmed that in the watch-along. The combat wheelchair was created by someone in the community. You can get the stats for it (on like Drive Thru RPG or something like that, maybe for free, I don't remember). Matt created an NPC in their 2nd campaign who uses that. Great character. Which you'll get to see when the animated Mighty Nein series comes to Amazon - they just announced they had signed a deal this week. I think the Pike think is a mix of Scrying and the Astral Projection she did in episode 9 of season 1. "Earth, Wind, and Fire" - Keyleth's Aramente requires her to go to the different Asharii tribes and complete their trials. She's from the Air Asharii, and has already completed the Earth and Fire tribes. The only one she had left at that point is water - which is why she couldn't directly part the water. And why she's "Earth, Wind, and Fire". THe beard being cut was actually a reference to a prank Vax played on him in game. The Belt of Dwarven Kind actually takes a d100 roll to give you a beard. You have to roll under a certain amount. Travis kept rolling really well, so it took several episodes for him to grow the beard. He finally managed to roll a nat1. That night, Vax got him drunk, and cut off half the beard. They were about level 11 or 12 if I remember correctly. Problem was, Ashley was back in NY filming Blindspot during this time. And yes, Vex is dead dead - the spell she was hit with, if you're dropped to 0 HP by that spell, it's an insta-kill.

That's how traps get you. They did it to themselves. Don't blame poor Matt, he's not out to kill the players, he just wants to destroy his own world. ;)

I don't really blame Vasselheim for their isolationist policy (although I disagree with it). They're one of the oldest cities in existence. They are practically as old as the Vestiges of the Divergence, and they've survived things much worse than the dragons. Realistically, Thordak could show up, and they'd probably be okay. They're the reason humanity still exists, so their focus is on making sure they're able to so it again if need be. The Take really exists for contracts. Someone needs magical creature parts, so they hire the Take to get the items for them. The Take gets paid a lot of money and they deliver within days of the contract being accepted. It's not a bad system really. Combat wheelchairs (the ones with the swords) are wonderful. And yes, that was the butterfly meme

When I first watched what happened to Vex on CR I had to rewind cuz it happened so quickly in session. Some things have been truncated and changed for the show but I'm pleased that scene remains largely faithful and given proper time.

As a long-time Critter, it's refreshing to see blind reactions to these moments. My reaction to the Vex death, knowing it was coming, was... extremely emotional. I cried, and not even manly tears, it was full-on sobbing. Also, I rolled a 10. Hope my modifier is high...

At this point in the campaign they were lvl 12 I believe.

iirc for context, they were level 9 beginning of the stream... ep 3 here takes place around Ep 40something of the stream, so they are a little bit higher level than 6.

Yep - I imagine it's because the show didn't constantly use her name and she was only in 1 episode. For anyone who reads this, Dr Ripley was the one-handed woman the party found in the jail cell underneath Whitestone Castle. She had previously tortured Percy and his sister. She had recently fallen out of the Briarwoods' favour and, when the party found her, offered to guide them to the Ziggurat. Percy wanted to execute her on sight but everyone stopped him. After she led them to the Ziggurat, she knew he wouldn't want to shoot her and give away his position, which allowed her to escape unharmed.

So the belt is a belt of dwarven kind, you can look up the stats, i think it gave 2 con and something else, and Grog already had 18 con but this bumped it to 20 so like god tier con, but he was already so high but no.... Travis took it for the rp side ability, it had a small percentage chance to make you grow a beard every day you wear it. So Travis rolled EVERY time they took a long rest..... I so love that, it's so me too. Im such a fashion fighter, forget the stats, does it make me look cool

Campaigns 2 and 3 are fun but Campaign 1 gets dark and emotional... as well as hilarious. Buckle up, buttercup bc ya'll are in for a fun ride lol

This is so Vox Machina, they all survive killing a dragon, then killing a Vampire Lord and his Necromancer Wife that created him (technically only knocked on conscious there but close).... but she dies to a random trap, that had she healed up after the fish fight she probably would have survived..... so random lol

To people with no sound here early: I believe it's still processing, not blocked. It's working on my PC but not my phone, and my phone has up to 1080p while PC just had 360p. give it a bit.

So yeah that tomb they are in now? Yeah it is dedicated to a Godess of Death. So I have a feeling that spells like Revivify are not going to work here.

Yeah, from what I've gathered that's basically what happened in the campaign. They're in a dungeon of a death goddess and the rogue is trying to look through it for traps and treasure and trying to emphasize how dangerous this place is( Vax's player was one of the more experienced players at the time I believe) and they triggered a trap on the armor of the champion of the death goddess and bam. That happened, she was dealt over 50 points of necrotic damage. If this style of damage reduces the player to 0 life points, it will kill them instantly rather than knocking them unconscious.

They adapt the arc so well. I love it. They get the very bleak feel with the humor still being there. And the animation is just beautiful

in the stream their health got pretty low but still the trap killing vex out of the blew for me ... especially as its dead dead not just unconcious as its very good shown here in the animation

I rolled three times. Failed my death saves, but apparently I'm in good company!

I have heard this comment in several reactions now, about Vex calling people "darling". It is part of her posh british accent. She calls almost everyone darling, and there is no reference ever of Vex being bisexual

@@RaginMunchkin from what i remembered it has been mentioned in-stream as well. And she has flirted with some women. I don't remember names or anything but it has certainly been said in-stream that both of the twins are bi. Laura has certainly confirmed that, and I think that she has confirmed that a lot of times she is not just trying to be charming, but actually just flirting.

Yeah, the whole "we have walls" is like a commander telling me "don't worry, we have sandbags". Yes. We do. And they have an A-10 thunderbolt. The dreaded Warthog close air support gunship. I am so not not hiding behind the sandbags! We gotta kill those, NOW.

That's what happens when you don't check for traps, have death magic trap, and you roll a 1 on your save.

Love you'r reaction :) Matt didn't kill Vex the dice did , and if you'l see hes reaction in that moment in the original game you'l know it was hard for him aswell .now thows of us who sow the game live can tell you that litrally 1 sec' everything is nice ther looking around then1 sec later Vex is dead Laura was in shoke every one was in shoke and the timeing in the original game and in this eps is Right becuse in the original game it happens like 10min or so befor the game endedd ( not incloding the talking after it endedd ) . keep watching it's only the begining of an Amazing talle.
