Vauxhall Vectra B Real Road Test!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Yes, I have the road test you've always wanted. A 1999 Vauxhall Vectra CDX 2.2 estate in retail silver, with 111,000 miles on the clock.
The test drive was conducted in serious haste (it was a courtesy car, I had a business meeting) and in dreadful conditions (because UK) so it lacks important things like a conclusion.
However, I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.

I have never understood why the Vectra B is so derided. Sure, it wasn't a quantum leap over the mark 3 Cavalier, but it did exactly what most normal people wanted a car to do, and still does in many cases.

I had a P-plate 2.0 LS hatch about 11 years ago now. It used to ferry me about 1500 miles a month for the best part of a year. It was mega-reliable and went like stink. Best bit was that interestingly it was fitted with a CDX wiring loom which meant I could fit the CDX goodies like rear map lights and illuminated sunvisors. Even the top-end OBC was plug and play! Sold it to a guy who lived on the base at RAF Mildenhall. Good car, it was.

I'm here for the V6 Vectra, fabulous engine. Only weak spot was the rubber gasket that failed on the inlet manifold that allowed water/oil to mix and make you think the HG had failed. Cheap to fix but hours of dismantling. Also, Omega, fabulous car. Not the best looking but super comfortable and refined!

Up north there's a thing about independent Vauxhall garages being a bit er... pikey or generally dodgy, especially if they also do part worn tyres (with it spelled "tyrez" for bonus points). I remember a Vauxhall garage next to a friend's lock-up which informed me that they were "droppin' a diesel Cavalier engine into the Calibra 'coz Calibras never had diesel engines and Customs won't tank dip it when they run it on red diesel" - missing the fact it sounded like a diesel. One of the people who worked there often went to the toilet by weeing up the side of his own Vectra too...

In the United States we got these as Saturn L-Series. Sedan and wagons in both 4 and 6 cyl versions. Still see them quite often even thought the youngest is 15 years old and the oldest is over twenty. I have a 2001 Saturn LW300 (V6 wagon) that I bought new. Has 393k miles and the only thing that doesn't work is the cassette player. It has only stranded me twice in all the year I have owned it. Once for a faulty fuel pump relay and once when the starter seized.

Funny to see you reviewing one of these now that I just bought one a few weeks ago. It's a silver estate just like this one, but with a 1.6 engine and less equipment. Didn't have MOT but only paid 100€ (under £90) for it. Only had to renew one bushing from the rear axle and she's got a fresh MOT now. Needless to say she's slow as a snail, but other than that I'm actually liking it. Certainly quieter and more refined than the Citroën BX I currently daily, even if the suspension in the Vectra isn't quite as nice. And while the Vectra has way better winter tires than the BX, it just doesn't have BX levels of grip on snow and ice. But then again I find BX particularly good in this respect. :)

The Vectra estate (particularly in SRI form) is one of those cars that you shouldn't like, but yet somehow... It's handsome, comfortable, cheap and more fun to push on in than it should be. I wouldn't touch a 2.2 though, the engines have a tendency to fail spectacularly with little warning (think it's a timing chain guide issue). Wouldn't mind a cheap v6 vec to add as a hoonmobile to my fleet alongside my disco and cinq though.

However, driving it on a day very similar to yours in the video, I drove over a drain on an easy corner and the front and back swapped ends!! urbex2007 not quite, IIRC the car did about 27 on petrol and 20 on LPG, but the fuel was half the price, with the very high mileage I did in under two years it was a good idea, but for the average 10-15k a year driver, agreed, not worth the effort and these days of course, MPG has improved.

I used to have a 99 Vectra SRI140 and it was a great car. it was a 2.0ltr 4 door and It went well and handled well, It was slightly lower than a standard car and the suspension was a little stiffer. I'm afraid I cant remember the mpg now ( I sold it 6 years ago) but I'm sure it was better than 28MPG. Vauxhall engines have always been a little loud but you get used to it. The only reason I sold it was because my other half qualified for a motability vehicle so we got a Ford Grand Cmax 2.0TDI Titanium to replace it.

Feelings of deja vu here. My neighbour got one of these a few months ago, same colour and also an estate. Only difference is it's a 1.8 SRI version. This car guzzles oil. I read it into it and apparently dealers were told to tell owners 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles was normal, even from new. Apparently it was something to do with the way the cylinder bores were polished.

Could never understand the hatred for these cars, which in my opinion was all down to Clarkson's review. People hung on his every word and like sheep they are still saying the car is crap today just because of his review. After all British jobs relied on the success of this car. Whist not an earth shattering car, my lowly company R reg 1.6 16v Saloon was a good motorway cruiser, yes with some quirks (the weird adjustable steering), but it gave good MPG and was no slouch. It also looked pretty good in its Titanium metallic. It was certainly a better performer than the 2.0 petrol VW Bora that replaced it.

But to it`s defence the 1.8 petrols i have had and have now they ar very cheap on fuel ! it does 45mpg highway and thats unbeliveble! No bottom end power so you have to thrash it but it likes to rew and that makes it fun! But for for heaven sake mind the timing belt!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe its not that the 2.2 16v lacks toque per say, but the gear ratios it has to work with are really tall! That makes it a good cruiser but not much of a sprinter. The SRi models had slightly closer ratios which helped you to keep it on the boil a bit easier, along with firmer suspensions, so was probably the better choice as a drivers car. I have always thought the estate versions was the best looker of the range, arguably nicer than its sucessor.

Unfortunately after my Astra J owing experience I could feel the energy being sapped out of me, watching this appraisal, hearing about the low torque engine, the hard seats, and feeling like the car was closing in around you. Ally that to an automatic gearbox that needs to change down to maintain motorway speeds on slight gradients, and thick screen pillars obstructing visibility, and I had an eight and a half thousand pound used car that on a short test drive seemed fine, but living with it was another story. I think maybe it's possible to like a borrowed car on a quick test drive, but Vauxhalls are off my shopping list from now on. A shame, because I've got books and brochures on 'heritage' Vauxhalls, but anything launched after 1979 is not for me.

I had a 2008 Vectra C 1.8 vvt. Covered 170k in 6 years. Believe it or not it was the most reliable car I’ve ever owned but was the dullest. Still at £7295 (thanks to Clarkson for the bad reputation forcing used prices down) at 1 year old it was the cheapest 170k miles ive covered. The only problem was a broken air con condenser.

The Seats and switches remind me of the US SATURN LS. Also had a base 2.2 liter engine. I have a 2007 SATURN ION Quad Coupe with a 2.2 and I'm driving happily at 126,000 miles. Is it fast, well NO! But damn reliable. No timing chain problems, I keep synthetic oil changes every 3000 miles (keeps the timing tensioner running free of sludge). I only manage 23 Miles per gallon, but then again European cars always seem to get better fuel mileage than US versions.

Ive had 2 Astra G's, they were super little cars, very reliable, and thanks to relatively short gearing, felt reasonably swift.. Never had trim squeaks or rattles, they were very solidly put together. Always got 35-40mpg, nearly 50 on a long drive.

I got a 2001 2.0 DTI vectra b after all the warning lights on my 1999 2.5 Omega came on all at once. The drive home was dull and sort of ecomical, I kept it for ten years and other than a couple of egr valves I never had to spend any serious money on it

I traded it in for a 2008 vectra c 1.9cdti, it had 160000 miles on the clock then and I still see it driving around, the vectra c was roomier and the engine was great but I thought the vectra b drove better.

I don't know much about Vauxhalls since they were never sold here but for $300.00 British Pound Sterlings i'm not sure how you could go wrong with that car. I do agree that it probably would be a lot more fun to drive if it was the V6 version versus the little 2.2 liter 4 cylinder. The 4 doesn't have enough power to move the wagon around briskley.

the only good ones are the v6 with upgraded suspension and the other usual stuff. they are fairly light in b form too, my converted 3.0 vectra b used to average about 34mpg and up to 40-45 on motorways at 80-90mph. i've had at least 4 v6 vectras and i thought they were all decent cars. the insignia is a pile, like most newer average cars.

Oh dear, I heard a lot of bad things about Insignia, and most of my local mechanics would say "buy an Astra, Insignia are rubbish". I own Opel Vectra 1.6V and I am very satisfied since it is holding up pretty awesome with my driving (still a greenhorn, just 2 years as a driver) :D And If I had a good amount of money, I would rather get it upgraded than buy a new car D:

I owned an X reg Vectra B LS. I also owner a T reg mk2 Mondeo Ghia X. Whilst I preferred the Mondeo, I never felt the Vectra was that bad and think the press almost wrote it off. It was best on a motorway, very comfortable but in terms of handling although not up to the Mondeo it was by no means the worst car I've ever driven for handling

so what happened at 6:52. A change of hair style yes but how and how quick? I would love you to review a 307 SW. Loads of room, Seven seats if required, Diesels are the better engine choice. Problems.... Seats can wear especially the bolsters, Arm rest are good for nothing. Red LCD display is not good in sun light or when you ware sun glasses. Plus the upper computer display fails and dose not display all of the figures correctly especially now the cars et older. Positives, Loads of space, remove the rear seats for a flat loading area, or add two more for a seven seater. The rest is for you.
