Vaults And Crypts Of Muckross Abbey

Ойын-сауық

Muckross Abbey (Irish: Mainistir Locha Léin and Mainistir Mhucrois) is one of the major ecclesiastical sites, found in the Killarney National Park, County Kerry, Ireland. It was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan friary for the Observantine Franciscans by Donal McCarthy Mor.
It has had a violent history and has been damaged and reconstructed many times. The friars were often subjected to raids by marauding groups and were persecuted by Cromwellian forces under Lord Ludlow. Today the abbey is largely roofless although, apart from this, is generally quite well preserved. Its most striking feature is a central courtyard, which contains a large yew tree and is surrounded by a vaulted cloister.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, it became the burial place for prominent County Kerry poets O'Donoghue, Ó Rathaille and Ó Súilleabháin, while Piaras Feiritéar is buried in the graveyard just outside

Another epic video. You only seem to bring out the very best these days Cathal. A simply gorgeous day to show the beauty of this Abbey. Many of the headstones were very readable as if they were decades instead of hundreds years old. I will add this to my list when coming back next year. I never saw this one years ago. gorgeous abbey, and I would have sworn that 500-year-old tree was sculpted if you hadn't said it was real. Random thing, the depiction of the bird over its nest might have been a depiction of a pelican. In medieval times the pelican was thought to pierce its chest to feed its young from its blood and was used as a symbol of self-sacrifice for one's family and countrymen.

Superb - utterly amazing- I wonder if you've ever been to county Antrim. This is where my Scotch-Irish family, the Craigs who came to U.S. in 1799 lived. I'd love to know more about them.

With every grave visitation there should be a prayer recitation to your hosts at the graveyard- that evens up the books since you're benefitting from the display of what was bestowed to them

Do you think I have the time to say prayers at every place in the country? I keep these people's memories circulating by saying the names out loud even after 100 years.

What is the difference between an abbey and a church? Very cool to see these cemeteries. Nicely done!

Abbeys are complexes with varied centers. Each center is designed for a particular purpose like grooming, living, community gathering, praying and other functions.

I was pleased to visit Muckross Abbey last May. I am very puzzled about the recent burials there. Do you have to know somebody to be buried there?
