Hello. The tomb of Saint John Paul II is not in the downstairs crypt. The photo of Saint John Paul II there is to remind people that he was buried initially there when he died. Pope Benedict XVI is now buried in that space. In face Saint Pooe John XXIII was the first Pooe to be buried in that space in 1963. Saint John Paul II's remains were moved to the main floor of the Basilica in 2011 when he was beatified. He now lays under the altar in the Chapel of St Sebastian which is next door to Michaelangelo's Pieta, 10:51 on the right hand side immediately after entering the Basilica. Saint John Paul II's resting place is one of the most visited sites within the Basilica. Mass is celebrated there every morning at 7am. I hope this info is of some use to you. I am in Ireland and I visit Vatican City twice a year. My next trip is in October for the feast day of Saint John Paul II . I hope you had a wonderful trip ❤ Pauline.
