STORYLINE:
Pope John Paul II, the Polish pontiff who led the Roman Catholic Church for more than a quarter century and became history's most-travelled pope, died on Saturday in his Vatican apartment. He was 84.
Bells tolled at the Vatican and across Rome, and Vatican, Italian and European Union flags were being lowered to half-mast across the capital.
The crowd of 70 thousand people gathered in Saint Peter's Square listened to the bells in silence. Some cried, other kept praying their rosaries.
The pope died after suffering heart and kidney failure following two hospitalisations in as many months. Just a few hours earlier, the Vatican had said he was in "very serious" condition but had responded to members of the papal household.

I hate when people say Catholics worship saints we don’t, we simply ask the saints to pray for us. Just as we pray to our lost parents and relatives we pray to the saints but we pray to them and worship god. God is the almighty the saints are man just as u and I but they are wise. God is wisdom

Oddly, while in Sunni Islam, saints are forbidden, in Shia Islam (Iran), saints are revered as in the Catholic faith.

I remember the feeling I got hearing that bell toll as it played live on US TV back in 2005, and I get the same feeling watching it again. Very eerie, gives chills and goosebumps as it tolls.

stixnatedogg Exactly the same feeling! I was also watching it 13 years ago but in the Czech Republic. I found it eerie as well. Moreover, Wojtyla had visited a monastery in my hometown. I and my parents had been there.
