Lacquer is widely known for its ease of application and short drying time. It’s the most used wood finish commercially. Its primary component is the resin of varnish trees. After harvesting and refining, the resin is mixed with thinner to create lacquer.
Lacquer:
* It’s compatible with various solvents.
* It doesn’t show yellowing over time.
* It’s relatively affordable.
* It looks sleek after application.
* It has low resistance to chemicals.
* You have to apply it again year after year.
* If it gets contaminated, defects will appear on the wood.
* If the room’s temperature is too warm, bubbles will appear.
* It’s harmful to the environment.
Polyurethane is a sealant that provides exceptional durability on wood surfaces, and is available as both a water-based sealant and an oil-based sealant. Polyurethane is very durable - some label it as “liquid plastic” while its still in the tub, because when it dries it will turn as hard as plastic.
Polyurethane:
* Water-based or oil-based
* Slow drying
* Matte, satin, glossy, and high gloss finish
* Very strong sealant
* Provides a shiny look when dry
Varnish is a clear protective finish. Varnish has little to no color and is primarily used in wood finishing applications where the final product will be in harsh conditions, such as sun or water. It can be applied over wood stains as well.
Shellac is a resin secreted by the female lac bug on trees in forests. It is processed and sold as dry flakes, getting dissolved in denatured alcohol to make a wood finish.

    Wow, this video touched on a lot of real world experience, like lacquer drying so fast it’ll keep dust out, and you can spray many coats quickly. That’s great for DIY where you don’t have a completely dust free area.

    Hello this is an outstanding instructional video and exactly what I needed to see in order to decide how to finish my project. It is a platform base for a freestanding bathtub. The platform is required because drain plumbing comes up through the floor about a foot away from the center of the tub. Inside the platform, the drain PVC will be positioned horizontal/tilt to connect to the bottom of the tub and the top of the PVC coming up through the floor (tile on concrete). The platform's structure will be 2x6s, the sides hidden by sapele trim (I cannot afford teak). The sapele will be coated with SPAR varnish because the bathtub is next to a walk-in shower and a big window (so the room has humidity, sunlight, and temperature changes). Thank you for an excellent presentation! By the way I always apply three coats of poly and use 000 steel wood between coats to aid adhesion of the next coat. Maybe you can make a follow-up video one day that discusses the pros and cons of 2-part epoxy, which has become very popular by desk and table builders, and acrylic ("polycrylic").

    Thank you. You just took something that’s bewildered me for my whole life and explained it perfectly clear and throughly in 15mins Lol. I’ve never had a solid understanding of finish coats or what their strengths & weaknesses were. And I really appreciate the book recommendations! It’s obvious you know your stuff so they must be great. Thank you! Great content overall!

    Wow, this actually helps a lot, you go to the store and they have hundreds of different options. I never knew the difference between lacquer and varnish. I have used polyurethane and spar varnish a lot but didn't really know if they were different or that anything for a boat just costs a boat load more. Thank you!

    I made some cheap paddles for my rowing boat, out of 2x2s and 1/4 plywood.. I went with polyurethane, 5 coats, just bc it's the only thing I had at the time, and now it's been 2 years of rowing in the bay and the poly has held up nicely, I was worried about the water getting into the plywood and it falling apart but it hasn't happened, and the oars get plenty of flexibility work handling the bay water, on a 14 Ft boat.

    I wonder if you used water-based polycrylic over white paint (since water base doesn’t yellow...) and then put polyurethane on top to make a harder surface it would still turn yellow? I feel like if you put a layer of water-based poly on first it would block any yellowing. Or for that matter even spray a thin lacquer layer and THEN Polyurethane for durability and weather

    With all of that criteria, try a "water based varnish". It shouldn't yellow, but you should test somewhere first. However, water based just isn't as durable.

    Thank you very much for your time and the video. I do have a question for you if you don't mind. I'm a sign maker, and I'm starting to sell outdoor wooden signs that I stain (pine board, and then I put vinyl lettering on them). What type of finish would I use for that ? The Spar Urethane wouldn't work because the finish needs to be totally clear and glossy, almost like a glassy mirror finish since I want the natural stain and wood to shine through without a yellow tint. I'm at a loss for the answer, and I would very much appreciate your feedback. If someone buys a larger sign that says "WELCOME" for their porch, wouldn't I be able to just stain that and use laquer even though it says "for indoor use only" ? The sign would be out in the elements, but it won't be handled or under any amount of strain. Thanks for your time.

    For outdoors, the biggest issue is sunlight, along with precipitation. Lacquer doesn't hold up well outdoors. There isn't a perfect solution for your situation. Durability comes with spar varnish or oil based polyurethane, but they yellow. If I were you, I might try a water based polyurethane, to try and get the "best" of both words. That would be better than lacquer.

    Excellent explanation. Which one would you use for an indoor coffee table? What about water-based polyurethane?

  • @JustSayN2O

    How would this finish hold up against coffee rings (where the cup meets the table, in case the bottom of the cup is slightly wet with coffee)? I don't know. I've never used water poly. I always use either oil poly or SPAR oil poly for my furniture, whether I build it myself, or buy an "antique" to strip and re-finish. The very slight amount of amber that oil poly imparts, has never bothered me. But then again, I also never use very light colored wood like maple. I tend to use mahogany, sapele, walnut, that's just my preference. But if you want crystal clear then water poly might be better. Might. Research it online. I've also used lacquer spray on small tables. Absolutely crystal clear! However many many coats are necessary to protect the underlying wood. Get a 3M respirator and a pair of organic solvent filters for it. Nothing less than that would be safe, in the setting of lacquer application. I'm just an amateur but been doing this for over 40 years.

    I just researched it online and found this video. In the search box above, enter: Epoxy vs Rubio Monocoat vs Polyurethane vs Lacquer It's a lengthy video, so watch in SPEED 1.25x mode. There is no longer any question about which clear finish would be best for a not-large coffee table.

    I applied 2 coats of an oil based polyurethane onto the writing surface of a desk. I find that I can easily scratch or dent the surface for example with a small amount of pressure from my thumbnail. Did I possibly apply "too" much polyurethane? I'm very disappointed in the apparent lack of toughness of the finish!! The finish is semi-gloss.

    Incorrect. Polyurethane and varnish are very closely related (one technology). But, shellac is totally different. It is made from bug secretion. Lacquer is a nitro cellulose.
