    Since it’s one of their more expensive lines I would expect it to perform well. Thanks for doing the test.

    For those for whom that's important: i do not have any agreement with Varivas and don't money from any sales. I have a code 'i_fish' and i don't make anything from it - it is just a discount for you.

    This line was 1 year old and the line i benched was on top of the spool - the line that has been in the water the most. I'd say that's not bad. OK, i will admit, i didn't expect that, because my VARIVAS polyester lines bench well below the label number. And then in the water they bench even lower 😆. But his is an impressive bench test for any line, let alone line thats been in the water a year ago.

    Victor, really appreciate your videos on pro and cons on the lines. It most certainly helps narrow the huge Japanese line market. Many of these lines are not cheap. So any help to fish good line and save a few bucks is nice.

    i feel a little guilty that i review only expensive lines. Thats not what i recommend, but thats what i use, and what i test... I can't spend 3 months fishing some cheap line just to test it... my time on the water is too valuable for me. That said, i am 100% certain that most of the cheap lines are good enough!

    I just changed to P Line Trout copolymer 2lb for my gilly setup. I would have to guess that the breaking point would be around 3lbs. Works better for me than Richard Gene's 2lb Vicious. That stuff breaks trying to pull the lure out of weeds. So far I'm liking the P Line Trout

    Hmmm,, I’m older now and have switched to 6 or even 8lb test for these reasons… it is easier to manage, tying knots, being able to see it, handle it, etc. … if I get snagged it is easier to pull it free. … I don’t believe it prevents strikes,, especially if it’s invisible flouro. … #1 reason??? Lose less fish! The fish you do NOT want to lose is the occasional trophy! I caught a 40lb carp on 6lb test after a long, fun fight. You saw the pic too, but casted shade on my trophy… even if it was 30lbs it’s still amazing! You caught a huge musky on a tiny jig. What pound test was that?

  • @ifishcatfish

    @ifishcatfish

    It was 6 lb main line. I didnt use thin line back then. I completely agree that u are no going to lose fish due to using 6 lb line. That is not why i use thin line. If u have high end japanese rods thats the only line u can use. 6 lb will not even run through those tiny guides. But also casting 1 gram jigs is way easier with thin line.

    What's a good beginner line for ultralight fishing? I watched your review of the ES2 where you talk about the orange polyester being bad for beginners and you should fish "something else for the first 16 years" and that got me thinking what I should try. I fish perch on stupid horse gear but I want to try to catch them on as light gear as possible and not just crank them in like I've always done. I bought a 1000 size Vanquish, a 2000 size Presso and a few rods to get started. I'm gonna try 1-3g gekkabijin jig heads (depending on what rod I'm trying) and trout magnets but I'm not sure what line to get. I ordered some ES2, Super Ester (which I guess is the orange line you're referring to) and some thin-ass braid because that's what I'm used to but I'm open to trying anything and if it's more forgiving that's probably good because I'm about 16 years away from having fished 16 years on ultra light gear.

    I would put fluorocarbon on one of the reels. Fluorocarbon is much easier than any polyester. If u go for these polyesters, the clear color lines seem to have more nylon in them and are more manageable. I was joking in that video, but not completely. If u start with that orange polyester there is a very good probability u can get rage and throw it in the trash can and abandon it forever. So if u move to super thin lines its nice to dip your feet in the water first with some fluorocarbon. I do recommend picking a Japanese brand though. For super thin lines reliability becomes important. If your line is 4 lb or thicker, i don't care what u buy, because it will be excessively strong anyway. But if your line is 0.12mm, which is what i recommend, then a japanese brand will definitely be worth it over some chinese sh1t that is reselled under a different label.

    @@ifishcatfish Thank you for the reply. Picking up a few different 0.12 mm Japanese fluorocarbon lines to try. I don't even know if ultra light fishing is viable where I live (Sweden). I'm gonna target perch but from experience I'm going to hook a bunch of pike trying to get the perch. Sort of terrified of what will happen to the gear when (not if) that happens. I've seen you hook huge fish on your ultralight gear so I know it's possible but setting the drag to like 200 grams (for a 2 lbs line) feels like nothing if big pike boy goes for my hook. We will see what happens. Thanks again.

    @@parski the pikes that pester perch anglers are usually juvenile dinks. Never been to sweden of course, but ive caught them here in the midwest. These small pike are not much of a stress for ultralight equipment, pricided that ur leader line slides right between their teeth and it doesnt get cut. I landed a 40” musky (same as pike) on ultralight and didnt really stress my tackle, just took some time. Biggest issue is them teeth cutting your line and running away with your expensive japanese jigs. If u have pike around, i would have a clear fluorocarbon leader of at least 0.25mm. Not longer that 60cm. The leader will not really deter fish from biting, as long as its clear fluorocarbon
