Used to use “hot mix”. Sand salt combo. Worked great if you were waiting for the loads to come in.

Pretty interesting to see the evolution of the MNDOT Plows. The ones they have today are so much more advanced than what they used to have.

In the state where I live, State Highway has been using a mix of salt, sugar beet juice and where needed, abrasives. Especially on bridges, tankers go out and spray the road surface with the sugar beet solution early on when the first snow is predicted then periodically as necessary. Many counties and municipalities are following along as well.
