Trivia but related: calico cats are chimeric, also. Mine has spots that are clearly orange tabby/marmalade and pure black spots on a white “field”. She’s almost like a half-moon cat, though, because the black spots are only on one side of her body (but more symmetrical on her head and her entire tail is black). It’s sad that I have to keep chopping her to keep her from reverting, though. 😢 🔪 😿

Wow, I am so impressed by this video. You did great explaining scientific topics to a general audience. There need to be more plant tubers sharing scientific info on the bio of plants on here. I think most people are afraid no one will be interested in these complicated topics but they give us a better understanding of what is really going on rather than spreading around old wives tales. I appreciate your respect for your viewer’s intelligence and hope you make more videos like this! I think you found your niche!

I will admit it is interesting though. Hope you enjoyed/learned something from the video. Thank you for the feedback.

@@phytosexual I think a video about photosynthesis would be interesting, especially with your humor. I’m a geek who took a bit of botany in college before switching majors to nursing so I would always have a job 😆. I found it interesting to learn quite a bit later in life that chlorophyll and hemoglobin are essentially the same molecule, with the main difference being Mg instead of Fe. I love that chemical kinship between our plants and ourselves.

Great video. Thank you for explaining the science behind variegations. If you want video ideas... can you do a video explaining what exactly all the different terms for lighting mean? For example what exactly counts as bright light, or low light, what about dappled light, etc. How far from the window does the bight light turn into medium light? Maybe what I consider bright light might not be what everyone else does.

This is a great video explaining the science! How come the genetic variegation of a Thai Constellation doesn't transfer through seeds? Actually I think PPP has transposon induced variegation. I know it has the reputation to revert easilly but once the plant is established even long time reverted stems puch out highly variegated leaves. Besides it does have that random speckled patern. Also it's not the only plant like that. Philodendron ilsemanii is also known as transposon induced variegated plant and it does also suppress it's variegation when stressed.

yes but x plantuber says you want it. They are taking a nosedive in price, if I can eventually get a decently variegated one for under $50 ill go for it. Currently the small ones at logees are $99

This is super informative thank you! I’ve got a quick question, I have a tricolour wandering Jew, and I’ve noticed that the leaf variegations tend to repeat on each vine (so I have a vine of half and half, a vine of single green stripe, etc. I love the effect, (and it means I can propagate the variegations that I love the most and give them as presents), but do you know what causes the patterns to repeat instead of being random? Thank you, love your content!

It's probably genetic if it's fairly consistent.

Yes! I Love these type of videos. People (myself included) can actually LEARN the facts instead of just guessing and making an ass of one self in the comment section. Not that that EVER happens (tisk*)🙄🤐😁 lol

I have neon pothos n they were kept directly in sun so they developed white variegation... m in awe but since they r out of sun they r normal with no variation anymore Was wondering if the gene got mutated n the stem still has the defect n the cutting will get variegated too

My pink princess for the loooongest time (4 months, but this is my life of waiting now, lol) didn't produce the bright saturated pink variegations I usually see online on IG and Pinterest. I was about to cut it after 3 olive green leaves in a row (with small whitish/washed out specks [4 nodes from the base at this point]). Then 3 days ago, it gave me the most striking pink half-moon leaf. Perhaps it needed more time to mature? I wish I could attach the picture, but it was definitely a religious moment for me. 🤣 Patience ❤❤❤ Hope yours will produce one soon!

I have a monstera deliciosa that pushed an variegated stem-leaf. Is it possible to make a variegated monstera from propagating that one leaf?

  • @phytosexual

Probably not. you could try to cut that leaf node off and propagate it to see what happens once it matures an has some stem above it.

I bought two crimson princess Hoyas and one has one green leaf and the other has a vine that has one variegated leaf and 5 green. Should I cut them out? These are such beautiful plants. I don’t even care they are common. My favorite that I own. 💕 I really don’t want them to revert.

So.... cut the greener/less variegated leaves off of an albo to promote more variegation?

Well not the leaves but the portion of the stem that is connected to the leaf.
