VAPORFLY NEXT% 2 vs ADIOS PRO 2 | The tough choice

Спорт

Hey everyone,
I hope you're all doing great! Today's video is all about two shoes: the Nike Vaporfly Next% 2 and the Adidas Adizero Adios Pro 2. Why these two? Essentially for two reasons: they're on my list for my next events and they may also be on yours for you Fall marathons.
As always we dissect the metrics, the stats, we go through the words and points and at the end I share my recommendations and personal choices!
Hope you'll enjoy this one, including the vlogging bit at the beginning (if you're reading this, let me know if you enjoyed it).
Cheers,
Alex

    I got the Alphafly and the Vaporflys as my daily trainers. I got the same problem like you. The Vaporflys have a very narrow and highly unstable heel midsole. So you gotta be super careful with your form. Just slight mistakes when running can lead to an inward pronation of the ankle, not dramatic but it adds up when you run about 15k every day like i do. That's not a big issue if you have a couple of other shoes in your rotation, but i guess only running in the Vaporflys will lead to some serious ankle and ligament problems over time. And yeah before anybody asks Alphaflys and Vaporflys can be used as daily trainers if you wait till wintersale and buy them in bulk for half the price. Or if you tape the exposed zoomx midsole foam so it doesn't wear out as quickly. The pair i use have about 410 km on them an still work fine. I have to say though that the continental rubber on all the Adidas shoes seems to be far more durable.

    Hi Alex. Great review! I joined your channel recently and am enjoying your comparisions a lot. I am wondering, why don't you consider Asics Metaspeed Sky for your race? I own VF Next% 2 and Adios Pro 2 - both works quite well for me (though, I prefer Adios Pro 2 for longer distances). I tried Metaspeed Sky and had a mixed feeling. In the beginning, it was quite good (I could easily pick-up a pace). However, my ankle became sore extremely fast (after just 8 kilometers) so that I had to make a couple of breaks to run back home :-( I never experienced this in other shoes. May be, you can give me an idea, why such a soreness might happen in the Metaspeed Sky?

  • @AlexFilitti

    @AlexFilitti

    Hi Vitaly, thanks for you nice comment and welcome on the channel. For me the MetaSpeed Sky *feels* a bit too aggressive and while it may work for a standalone 10k, I wouldn't use it for the opening 10k in the context of my race where I want fresh legs afterwards. Thanks for sharing your experience with the MetaSpeed. Never heard of such an issue but for me it comes down to either a different footstrike pattern or the lever effect of the rigid plate on your lower limbs. Hard to say but it may go away with time (and strengthening these areas for you which is good as well). Most important is too avoid getting injured by the shoe. Hope this helps :-) Take care

    Great comparison. I'm a bit surprised at the conclusion on the outsole. I have the N% 2 and, after a single run on gravel, the durability is not good at all (ie. significant damage to a point I will contact Nike). While I cannot compare with the Adios Pro, the continental rubber from other models has been much more durable in my experience.

    Very nice comparison! I am a tall and heavy runner, I currently have the Next% 1 as my race-shoe, my only gripe is that it’s a bit unstable over longer distances when my technique starts to suffer (everything beyond a half marathon in a running race or the half in a 70.3). Seems like the Adios Pro (v3) could be the shoe for me! By the way, as a triathlete I would love some content about your bike ;)

    Big time heel striker here. I felt a lot more rocker and forward propel from the adios pro 2, while the next %2 feels more flat. Generally I prefer the adios 2. However, the adios sole is so thin and after 400 km I’ve ran through the sole already and running on foam now. I just bought the next %2 and I feel it’s less bouncy compared the adios pro 2. I’m 87 kg and 190 cm tall. Also I can confirm the foam on the next %2 has the levels of hardness.

    I think I heard somewhere that while the Next% is the more efficient shoe, the Adios pro is easier to accelerate / change pace in. Can you confirm that? Would be an interesting factor for race tactics as the Next% would thereby be the better shoe for mostly even paced runners going for their fastest time, while the Adios pro would then be better for sit and kick type of runners.

    When I did one of my shoeoff tests (here running at 5K at about marathon pace and about 2.5K about 10K speed) was very little in it. I still prefer the NEXT% 1 to both however as the NEXT% 2 fits a bit wide for me plus it has done very in actual races from 5K to marathon and a few shorter TTs. Surprised you say the Adios Pro 2 is more stable as found it quite wobbly until got the hang of it and found it likes a midfoot landing. If I rocked back on heels (say downhill) then felt a bit unstable. Never really had any stability issues in a NEXT%.

  • @AlexFilitti

    Hi Tim! Thanks for the super interesting comment here. Yes the Adios gets a much lower pronation angle (almost a 10 degree difference between the two shoes which is a lot) and also less pronation velocity. But I agree that at slower paces or in some fast descents it may *feel* wobbly.

    I just think NIke shoes are to expensive, alpha or vapor. I was already doubting between these 2 for my marathon in october (training for now). But i stuck with the Adios 2 since i am still training in the Adios 1 now. So i get your point about choosing where you have trust in. But good info on the pounding with the adios 2! I could feel that after my 25k last weekend (in the adios 1, but i believe the 2 is softer?) and now i'm doubting again whether i can finish 42k on the Adios 2. So i picked up another shoe entirely. The RC Elite 2, purely because it's supposed to be the softest and most comfy of the carbon racers. The fit is a bit better for me in the adios 1 then the 2, i am a heavy runner and wide footed and had to go half a size up on the adios 2. But the RC Elite 2 feels much better in size and fit for me. But maybe i lose to much energy on the RC Elite 2 because it's less rigid and softer. So i'm gonna alternate between the Adios 2 and RC Elite 2 untill like september and then decide (purely for the long runs ofc). Never thought choosing the right shoe for a full marathon was that hard. I thought i'll just pick whatever and go with it. I'm using the Endorphin Speed for all the other runs in the week. It is my first full marathon however so it might be safest to choose for the RC due to comfort but aargghhh i dunno.

We're all different and we have different needs that's why I give those "recommendations" but they can become more accurate thanks to this kind of comments. Based on what you wrote, RC makes some sense. Efficiency is important but there's no point in having the most efficient shoe if you and up with blisters and cramps on race day because of it. Your testing approach sounds good: you can even try to switch during the same session back and forth to see how you feel. Keep us posted!!

Now I will try the Adios for a tune up race or a TT kind of workout to gain that experience too and then decide on race day solely on "what's the best for me today" and no external factors like experience or confidence. Thanks for the comment and take care :-)

    I have both, the vaporfly is MUCH better shoe for me. Lighter, better fit, more energy return, more stable platform not wobbly. The adios energy rods have hot spots (pressure points) what is not good for long run. By the way I really liked your review.

    i specialise in posture correction and running gate. I'll just say this, no matter the runner once these things are corrected the only reason i would recommend the adidas is after testing them both and watching tests, is if the vapor simply didnt fit the foot and the adidas did. And to be honest, I had hoped the adidas would have been the better shoe after enjoying few yrs of assistance from them when competing(Still love there stuff)... but alas the Nike is ahead in race performance...and by a lot.

    Hi Alex, what’s the durometer score for the Invincible compared to the VaporFly next % 2 ?

  • @AlexFilitti

    @AlexFilitti

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi! Excellent question :-) Exact same score (32) as the upper layer of ZoomX on the Next% 2. So quite soft. But ZoomX is such a special animal because even if it's not that soft compared to other foams (the autoclaved Fuelcell, the FF Turbo) it's so bouncy and it returns so much energy. Are you surprised about the two layers of ZoomX on the Next%? (I don't remember if you own one). Thanks for the comment ;-)

    @@AlexFilitti yes surprised there are two levels indeed Alex! I was very much taken with the Invincible when it was released and I have 300km on my pair however I’ve learned that depending on how my legs feel, it can really sap the energy from my runs. It seems I’m sinking so far in that it’s a struggle to get my feet out of the midsole in my stride ! 😢 especially after ive just run in the Rebel v2. I feel best in the Invincible sometimes when I’m not totally exhausted! In this regard I’m having to reassess my usage of them on recovery runs! I still love them, it’s just that the honeymoon is over and I understand their strengths and weaknesses 😊

RunScribe is a fantastic tool to collect gait analysis metrics (Stryd collects some as well but a very limited amount compared to RS) and Stryd is great for training and racing (while RS is not designed for that). Hope this helps :-)

    Bonjour Alex.

    Peanut butter my bread is so funny. Now to the battle. I’m not one to give Nike Any slack but I think Nike’s secret to success in the shoe is the plate. We all know that you tune the plate to different stiffnesses for different purposes. I believe what Nike doesn’t say and what ultimately separate them in each battle and regardless of what shoe company puts out a contender to take down Nike. I believe the Nike plate is progressive. I believe they have figured out how to use a plate the progressively gets stiffer the more force you put into it. The faster you run the more force and the stiffer the plate. Actually I should say the flex of the plate. Easier at slower speeds and stiffer at faster paces. I believe this is the difference and Nike figured it out. Anyway great review keeping spreading that peanut butter! 💪💪💪🥜🧈

  • @AlexFilitti

    Hi Mike. I totally agree in the end it comes down to the plate. But I think on top of the rigidity and how it evolves through the paces, there's also the shape of the plate. And Nike imagines that curved plate that reacts differently depending a) how much force you put into it, that's for sure but also b) where you strike on it. And the curvature at the front is I believe designed to enhance the energy return at faster paces (based on the assumption that people strike more towards the forefoot at higher paces or at least transition faster from their heel to that toeoff area). Does that make any sense? A great thing would be to remove those plates and compare not only their thicknesses but also their shapes...
