Good evening bud, Iv been watching and following for quite a long time now and absolutely admire how you live full time in your Motorhome, I’m in the middle of searching for a Motorhome myself to sell up and go full time, you are an absolute inspiration to me and anyone considering going full time, I find your posts very educational and extremely helpful to us first full timers even those who have been doing it for a while aswell, you always seem to have a smile on your face and that to me is you are living life to the max, I am a distance driver myself also and stay out 2-3 nights a week and always look forward to staying out, especially when I’m up Scotland, it’s not easy finding the rite Motorhome but I’m sure I will before this summer 2023,,,, then I will sell up and go full time😃,,,,,,cannot wait,,, always look forward to your next post bud, safe journey and never stop what makes you happy, all the best and have a great Christmas and new year 🤝🇬🇧🦞

A big b2b charger will keep you going no problem iv got a 60 amp renogy b2b charger and still use lead acid and have no problem with power basically my drive to work, to the supermarket and to pick my partner up from her work easily keeps up with my daily use and I use alot more power than most van lifers. Heater going constant, WiFi on 24/7, 12v fridge small twin tub 240v washing machine used 2/3 times a week and even leave a light on for my cat when not in and my b2b and solar keeps up with it all

That’s a really sensible approach Daz. Stealth camp as much as possible, but always have a campsite as fallback in winter - just in case conditions (or your situation) goes pear-shaped. Have a great Xmas 👍

you could use a small generator for emergencies, to charge main batteries, and power bank, when there are no other options, and noise will not disturb anyone.

Its not a bold claim Darren, its practical and common sense. Good vid mate.

The River Pro comes with me on trips to Motorway Services. After a shower and filling up a water caddy or two, I'll set up on a table next to a socket and kill some time on the Mac (which is *also* charging). I can fit a lot into those 2 hours of free parking. 😁

I stay a club site about 12 times a year I pay about £21 night but I do the same I charge everything and do all my washing I only have normal battery’s 200 amp lead acids get water full toilet done I think it saves me money in long run at least you tell the truth how it is not like others hope you stay well over winter

Make your solar tiltable for the winter sun. As a fellow trucker, I have a PowerOak and a Jackery. I take one with me when needed in the truck and charge it during the day from the 30a socket.

@Procat Procat I have 4 panels and made 2 of them tiltable. One tilts side to side and one tilts front to back. So at least one panel can be tilted towards the sun.

Great advice, Daz, we did this in Scotland, then went off grid for two weeks. If we did need to top up we were just going to top into a campsite for a night, but we did not require it, like you we are members of the camping and caravan club, well worth joining up.

We don't live in our van but we do use it year round and for longer trips. We usually stop at a site about once a week (not lithium) to use all the facilities, then off out into the wilds again. It works for us.

Just makes a load of good sense, again!!

I just have 2kw suitcase generator. Only takes half hour to charge lithium battery. Plus still can use air fryer and other gadgets plus charging phones etc. worked for me for 2 years.

We’re new to all this and having stayed at a couple of CAMC sites (like all sites) we met some really nice likeminded people too! That’s a win.

Made me laugh in a good way, well done for being honest, I live off grid during the week, if I need extra power I have a enverter generator to top up, and do campsites at the weekend to fully charge up etc..during the winter. Enjoy the campsite.

Hi Darren I am so glad you have started your dream. You are now living my dream. I am 62 years old and have another 5 years until I can retire . This season I will be working running a trailer kitchen at the Golden cap holiday park at Seatown near Bridport the scenery is fantastic and I will also have an electric pitch and laundry facilities. The only drawback I am tied to the campsite with only Tuesday and Wednesday off..but I hope to save up over the summer to live wild over the winter. Next year I would like to work on the road. Love ya Darran. You're such an authentically loveable character, and just so naturally positive! And you also offer many useful tips and tricks. I'm fulltiming in France/Europe in my older Hymer A class and am spoilt for parkups. I only have two lead acids and a couple of hundred watts of solar. I end up in a motorhome aire with electric about once a week at the moment and then I'm good for water, recharging, dumping of waste, rubbish disposal- and a bit of socialising if lucky! Also, very nice to have a safe spot to leave the van and go off to nose around local towns and cities, or be off for a day's cycling. There's no prize that I'm aware of for staying completely off-grid in the winter, and adding lithium and loads of other expensive goodies is not always an option for some. Planning to start my own channel soon - you've been a total inspiration.

Great tactics buddy makes perfect sense you get a nice long worry free shower empty all your tanks and refill with fresh water charging up ya batteries and have another shower all for £14 Brilliant 👍

Nice to hear and know these things as I dont live in a motorhome as such but live in a touring caravan and planning on solar and upgrade the battery so I dont have to be hooked up to the mains for most part of the year and have thay feeling off being off grid

I have installed a type 2 socket on my van next to the shore power inlet, the socket is programmed to request 240 volts ac single phase from the EV charger so i can just run that stright into my standard mains chargers. I must echo what @ngylo says further down about not taking spaces from actual EV vehicles if you do go down this route. I only charge at night and limit myself to 3 hours at any time. I also move away if there are no more empty spaces on any bank of chargers so im not depriving an actual EV from using them. As long as you follow similar rules i highly recomend looking into installing an EV socket as its far far cheaper than using a campsite. (28p/Kwh at time of commenting so no more then £1.50 per sitting.) The only down side is finding a charger i can park an XLWB van next to.

@@Mevi It is a self install but the specialist parts are from Evbitz. The options have changed slightly from when i brought it but you would need to get a Type 2 socket with 1P tails and an optiopn for auto switch on. i believe thats under the P3 tails dropdown. The person that runs Evbitz is friendly and helped me out selecting the right one so give them an email of you want to feature it and to confirm what settings/options are needed. the end result is a socket you can mount in the side of a van with long cables for Live, Neutral and Earth that woudl need wiring like any other mains source.

We like you find power difficult in the short dark winter days if we are not on the move every other day. We have 500 watts of solar and 420 amps of battery. Our solution is a 2kw Honda inverter generator that seems to run for ages on a jug full of petrol.

Your just telling us what real life is Darren ha ha. In winter the most you can go for is lasting as long as you can off grid before going to a campsite. This is why i alway recommend to folks to buy the most powerful mains battery charger you can afford - so you can spend less time having to charge up. Thanks for the vlog!

Nice video Daz ! For me it’s all about your setup ! I don’t have solar anymore since I have upgraded my dc charger 120amps from Sterling ( 560ah lithium battery ) forget about Victron you would need 4 to do the job of one Sterling …. Works well .

Pub park ups can be great. Theres a pub near us that charges £5 for a park up and an extra £5 if you want to plug in.

My partner and I have immigrated to Australia, we live in a motorhome and travel around australia, we have 240ah lithium installed and 200w solar, we purposefully book into camp sites every 10 days - 2 weeks for washing and a destress. also to boost our batteries to 14.4v. Camp sites here per night are $40 dollars offpeak, ONPEAK ... u ready?..... $200 + PER NIGHT. ( on the beach front mind you)

I don’t have anywhere near the capacity you’ve got, and would always consider a hook-up when it’s needed. However it’s always good to refresh peoples minds 👍🍻

I agree with having a caravan club membership 💯 but full timers need a petrol generator as a real backup👍

Pragmatic beats frozen van and lithium batteries every time. Any fool can get cold on principle pie, but in winter a campsite stay can solve a bunch of problems in short notice. Less facetime shaming , more practical independence should be the watch words. If your vans not set up for 3 season van life, don't punish yourself, find a good hook-up and plug in. EV type 2 charging converters for your leisure batteries are becoming more and more common nowadays. Charge your house batteries via a EV charging station. Theres 2 ways to go about it. Either get a converter for £100-200 that steps down the voltage for your house battery or a battery bank that accepts an EV inlet prebuilt. Ecoflow already has a converter going for less than £100 last I saw that lets you charge ecoflow batteries at EV charging stations. (EV X-Stream Adapter) Only downside is you SHOULD NOT take priority over actual EV cars, else charging stations might start limiting their stations to be only used by actual EVs.

I've been casually looking into how the viewers might be able to top-up using an EV charger. I guess a middle of the night charge up shouldn't put many out and hey, money is money. I'll mention the EcoFlow adapter to Daz and see if we can get some info from them. Thanks for that!

There is no need to use camp sites. Solar works in all temperatures, you just have to face the sun. Use gas for cooking in the winter weeks. My solar still powers my phone, tablet, camera, laptop and TV in winter. You just need to be frugal.

Honda eu2000i generator super quiet and sipps fuel.....not everybody wants or needs solar.....😁

I think it is fairer to say; no one wants a generator and quite a lot of people want free autonomous power from solar. Get up at 10am in the summer and the power you took out of your batteries the night before has already been replaced with you lifting a finger? Agreed a generator may be necessary for some people in the winter but definitely not wanted

This is my first winter in my (unfinished) van conversion here in the UK. I noticed quickly going from summer to autumn/winter that my 400W solar wasn't going to cut it during this time in the UK. I've added another battery (total 360Ah AGM), they were only 3 months old so no problem adding an upgrade. I've installed a 30A B2B charger, had to pull out my old mains battery charger as it couldn't cope with the Ah upgrade to a 30A mains charger, have got the golden ticket to plug into the mains over winter and now I got mould growing in the bulkhead... I've sorted that now to but hey, fun times! :)

I remember my first winter living in the van was quite OK. I didn't have solar, so I drove to charge the batteries and used battery powered lights. This winter feels colder than the last few. My waste pipe has frozen, so my sink won't drain!! 🤣

Spot on Darren, we fulltime and having the 2x 135amps of lithium and btb and inverter plus more solar fitted (600watts) fitted. Will never mind going on a site to fill up water, empty waste , loo, have a shower, washing, and a good recharge. It's a great feeling with 150lts of water plus empty waste tanks, and fully charged batteries, and both gas tanks filled up.

Hi Darren… we have met a couple of times just before so started full time in my van. I adopted the approach you suggested and I roughly spend 6-8 days a month on a site as I have my sons with me and due to their playing football every weekend, I have to stay local (near where you are I think)… I use an EcoFlow Delta Max for most of my needs with the Leisure battery just providing power to the Fridge and Heater. I was pretty naive about how the Leisure Battery needs to have sufficient charge to get my Webasto Diesel Heater to work. It is this reason that I use the sites. I can charge everything up, charge the EcoFlow and thereby keep warm. Interestingly, it has been suggested that if push came to shove, I could use a EHU to Mains Adapter and then use the EcoFlow to power the Diesel Heater. Not tried it yet but there is no reason why it shouldn’t work… I will update this comment on Sunday as I will be back on site then. Hope to catch up with you again in person sometime. I power my van purely by power bank. I terminated the diesel heater power cable with a 12v plug which I plug in when needed. It start-up it draws 100W for a couple of minutes, lowest heat setting draws 6W and it seems to go up in 2W increments for every heat level. Basically, your plan would work. 😎👍

Just a thought but why don’t you take your solar generator to work with you & charge for free off your trucks 12v socket ? Or better still if your truck is fitted with an invertor you can charge off that for free ? I know 12v charging is slow but if your driving for a living you do a lot of miles / hours ?

Heya, newbie here, question about your electrical system. i got a horsebox that has been half converted to a motorhome already and i will convert the back of it shortly. it has shore power but... i will be off-grid pretty much continuously when im in it (holidays and long weekends only) I do have access to a backup generator and also in an emergency i can do off shore. My question is about the way you had your motorhome altered to use solar, inverter and leisure batteries and also have a switch to then change to offshore. how does that work and how much did it cost? I already have 500w solar panels, inverter and charge controller but i have no clue how this is going to work now! Thanks for any insight, im such a newbie!

Get an electric under blanket not to keep warm but to warm the mattress under the quilt then pull the quilt back allowing any damp to escape the mattress and quilt drying them out before sleeping

Diesel is my biggest expense which at least seems to be a stable price now, even though it's stupidly high. After that it's food which is the one I notice creeping up. It's slim pickingss on the supermarket reduced aisle. Everyone is broke. Not a lot of lit-up houses this festive season!

Prices are going crazy that’s for sure! You know what really hit me though last night with the whole energy cost crisis was when I was walking back to my motorhome and noticing almost all houses still had frost/snow on the roof, there was the odd few that didn’t but it’s really showing how much people are having to cut back on the basics, very sad times 😞

You must have your diesel heater on or 230v heater as you are sitting in your t-shirt lol.

If you scroll through the comments on this vid, one commenter actually fitted a charge socket on his van. Follow the messages back and forth and he shares the part and supplier. Seems you'll get single phase 240v, delivering a little over 3KW.

When looking for a motorhome I kept reading about power, I thought I needed solar panels lithium batteries and the rest, having owned one now for 6 weeks with no solar just one leisure battery I have had no problems, I live in it and its my only vehicle, my power usage is one light and tv plus a bit of water heating, I have sat 2 days and my battery has only dropped a bit, as soon as I start driving its back full again, for what I need I have no problem with just 1 battery, I don't get the need for all this excess power? Maybe I'm missing something?

You have quite low power usage and happy to move / plug in every few days so lead-acid is probably fine for you. Lead acid is good at one thing only, being cheap. They are inferior in every other measurable way. A lithium battery would last a very long time with your low usage so probably the last battery you would ever buy. A lot of motorhome users want to be able to stay still with no hook-up for days to weeks and use high power equipment like hairdryer, air fryer, hair straighteners etc. Some people use lower power devices for long periods like running office equipment for 6-8 hours per day or diesel heater and DC fridge 24/7. Horses for courses

I understand they need to be a good size and mounted high up to produce enough power to be worthwhile AND installed away from the vehicle otherwise the vibrations transmitted through the shell of the vehicle would be maddening. Wub-wub-wub-wub-wub. 😆 Something that would work for static off grid, but probably too impactical for mobile.

I expect it's a matter of planning permission for motorhome specific spaces being granted by local authorities. I'd actually like to see something like this at motorway services to go with the showers & launderettes.

Remember spray your feet with antiperspirant so socks don't get damp and feet stay warm.

If you did have more battery power, you could reduce your campsite visits.

You might want to check out the KZreadr Robert Murray Smith, he has been playing around with things like terracotta heaters and rocket stoves.

Darran , I wonder if you can help if you’d be so kind? Just had 210ah of e/t lithium 525w Solar and 2 x 30 Orion b2b , problem is the b2bs aren’t charging! And supplier/fitters are closed 😢 30% left in lithium and no b2b charging! I’ll have to plug in on a site tomorrow

Were they working and *then* stopped working? Are you able to connect to both the Orions in the app over Bluetooth? Any obvious problems with the cables? That said, I don't know much if any about these things. Hopefully the fitters are open after the weekend and not on a festive shut-down. In an emergency, contact Luke (KZread Luke's Van Life) and Mark at Blue Fix. They will understand your pain as they're both Vanlifers themselves AND they're official Victron suppliers. Stay warm!!

No offence but all good having 2x iron battery’s and a eco flow, Only if u have a big bank balance Ur battery’s are showing 700+ pound each Ecoflow ur talking a 500+ depending on what one u want Thats 2k just on that Not everyone can afford that, I look up stuff u guys recommend and is way to pricey How about a video on more cheaper products for people on a budget

That was the main point of this video really, sure you can buy more lithium or ecoflows and that’s great if you’ve got the cash, or you can buy more B2Bs/solar, again that’s great if you got cash and the option to have more but the simplest and most economical way to stay charged in the winter when solar is pants is to go to a site for a night or two every 3/4 weeks (or what your system allows), closest thing to plug and play for between £15/20 a night.

These products should be seen in the context of a motorhome. Average motorhomes are probably £50,000 and useless if your battery is flat, cold and dark. If you are in a shoestring budget van full time then the money saved on rent/mortgage can go towards decent equipment for the van which you live in. These products should be seen as an investment into your home/leisure vehicle

Keep motorhome living but purchase a cheap house with plenty parking in cheap area park it there and charge, rent rooms out, first £150 rent every week is tax free from own home or rent whole house keep land use for van charging. Own home is capital gains tax free no tax on selling, unless been letting.

I don't understand this rush to get lithium batteries. Why do so many KZreadrs lie about them. I use 2 x 135 amp lead acid. From previous experience I know I can get eight years out of them. I use 200 watts of solar and a 30amp DC to DC charger. I have never ran out of power. I can safely use %50 of available watts but lithium batteries you can only use %60 safely, not this nonsense of %100. I can buy 20 years of lead acid for the price of maybe ten years of lithium. The end.

Lol. If only they all knew what you know. All these people just wasting all their money on these silly lithium batteries which are no better than lead acid but loads more expensive. How do we get the word out that all these people who own and use lithium batteries are just lying to hide the embarrassment of admitting they bought lithium when all they needed was lead acid Maybe you should start a new lead-acid leisure battery company and put all these lying lithium pedlars out of business

Bought a hymer today used obvs lol. It has 2 solar panels on, do I add another battery ? which ecoflow is better? Bought a genny jic too.
