    Nice! I once investigated the possibility of moving to Tonga to start a farm. I'll be ordering my vanilla from these guys soon. I checked out their site, and they sell it at a reasonable price so long as you stay away from the value added products. When I get my farm started in central California, I'll give vanilla a try. Probably only a small number for personal use in the greenhouse with the pineapple and banana trees. It always amazes me how much work goes into stuff the average person takes for granted at the grocery store. Vanilla looks like it's pretty labor intense, but no where near as bad as cashews. Oh my god, I can't believe all the work put into harvesting cashews!!!

    That guy from the EU can go suck a bag of 'you know what' though! Damn socialist taking in circles with his circular collectivist logic.

    Thank you, very interesting to learn about this marvelous flower and the intense process to acquire this spice. For sure one appreciates these wonders of nature much more when one learns about the work that goes behind it and how the people really care about the product. ;-)

    I have no back ground on agriculture, why do we need to pollinate each flower? What happens if the flowers weren't pollinated?

  • @jburtonca

    @jburtonca

    7 жыл бұрын

    The plants will not produce pods if they are not pollinated. It's the same with apples, cherries etc. Vanilla originates in the Gulf coast of Mexico. In Mexico there is a type of small bee that pollinates the vanilla flower. There were attempts to introduce these bees to other regions where vanilla could be produced, but for some reason they did not survive. For this reason the vanilla flowers must be hand pollinated.

    I live in central Mexico and I have many plants. I have lots of vanilla pods every year but I have to hand pollinate my flowers to get the beans. Unfortunately the bees are going extinct...

    Your plant has to be at least 7 meters long before blooming. Mine took five years. The first year I only had three beans because hand pollinating is not that easy. Last year I had over 50:flowers but got only 17 pods.. I am now curing my pods..
