Vanguard V4 vs Mavis Prima MPA-81s: More Bang For Your Buck?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There's no doubt the Mavis Prima MPA-81s is styled heavily after the Vanguard V4. They even have the same exact generic circuit. But how close do they sound? And is the Mavis Prima a better overall value? What about the MPA-81s as a Mic DIY donor platform?
The Mavis Prima MPA-81s is also known as the BaiFei Li V8 and can be found here:

I have been using this microphone for a long time as my main microphone for recording voice-overs and some effects. Very satisfied! On some sites it is more expensive than Vanguard...

That’s really interesting. I wasn’t aware it had been out that long. I’m glad to hear you’re getting everything out of it. It’s a killer deal.

@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff , On Tabao, this microphone was about 50% more expensive than the original Avangard in Moscow. Moscow prices were almost equal to Californian ones. I got it cheaper and showed it for the first time at the end of this video - kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4WE26-qkq3Hhso.html That video and all subsequent ones were recorded on it. I saw your message on the forum and was a little surprised that you wanted to make it a donor. I don't want to look like an expert, I just listen with my ears and I like the result with minimal or no processing at all, this is often better than guys with fancy audio cards and microphones. I like the very low level of my own noise and good timbre capture, the sound comes out visually tangible. KZread is pressing, but overall - I'm happy. This microphone closed this sound direction and will be used far beyond just voice, I have not only foam rubber for it, but also fur, even an airship - if necessary). Although there are guns and stereo pairs from other manufacturers.., maybe it won't leave the studio.. If you listen to the videos from the channel and give advice on improving the sound or its shortcomings, I'll be grateful.

That's a good point. Maybe it would be a great mic for Instagrammers if, like most of them, it's kinda dead inside.

Great video! There is also a brand in TaoBao called MRWHO which look alike Telefunkens. There are a few chinese KZreadrs here testing them. The model which looks like the Telefunken TF-11 sounds almost identical to the original.

Thanks Heraldo! That's interesting. I've been hearing more about TaoBao and the different mic things on there. That TF-11 body is pretty much everywhere these days so I'm not surprised someone is making affordable Telefunken clones

Hey Bill! LOLOL! These days I can't think of Paul Giamatti without thinking of his wonky eye in The Holdovers. And unlike a bottle of wine, none of these mics is gaining complexity as the days pass.

I bought a bunch of V4s(10 or 12) after extensive shoot-outs with much, much more expensive mics. We were planning on 2 new mics, but ended with 10-12 we thought sounded just as good for the same price. We use em on every instrument you can think or have heard of. I can not think of one thing that sounds bad on that mic. (There are better mics for some sources, of course). The bleed sounds GREAT when we fill our rooms with people. That tells you what you need to know about how good the capsule is, no matter the source of it. It was an absolute steal at $399, and I have not heard a better mic at $699. Would/Will buy again.

Through my monitors the Vanguard sounds like it has a bit more low frequencies as well as a significant bit more air.

Thanks Richard! That more of a “smile” frequency response would be what you’d expect from an edge terminated capsule, even with the same backplate. It’s a good example of the difference that the capsule can make.

$700? No way... Joe about a $499 SE Electronics Se4400 version 2. Great all arounder.... Honestly i don't think that mic is much of an upgrade from a Rode NT1 at like $269. It doesn't even have a transformer...

After crapping all over the Vanguard V4 for a week, I think it's decidedly a better mic than it seems and quite a nicely tuned mic with lots of detail and warmth that far exceeds any piece of shit that Rode has ever put out, but that being said, I agree there is no reason to pay $700 for it unless someone literally puts a gun to your head.

Hell to the hell no. This is why I call it a good case study. Vanguard figured out how to make their mic disappear with one terrible decision.
