+Kenneth Lamb That's only "2ND PLACE" compared to Whitney Houston. Let's be 'HONOST' now,,, who ever had Whitney's special gifted tone? However,,, the ONLY thing I will be honost w/ about Vanessa,,, no one else has ever had the extraordinary hazel eye's like her's. They are just shining crystal's to me.

Malinda S let;s not! The real tea concerning the one and only Ms. Vanessa Williams is that unlike Whitey Houston, Vanessa is an Acclaimed and Accomplished Broadway Superstar celebrated across all of the Arts hence a (real) triple threat. 14 Grammy noms, 3 Emmy noms, 2 Tony noms, assisted in the snatching of the Oscar for "Colors of the Wind" Beauty unmatched with a Natural sex appeal almost impossible to duplicate. Unlike Whitey Houston, Vanessa is a classically trained singer whom unlike Whitey up until late in her career kept it Urban at black radio. Vanessa admires women like Bette and Barbara Streisand women who really sing not just screamed their vocal cords to pieces and unlike Whitey respect their Gift. Vanessa managed to make History for black women to be admired in mainstream media. No shade of course, just some true tea.

Most R&B and Pop acts got lumped in a box, until they weren't. Especially when it came down to videos because there was finally other places to watch videos, other than MTV. Record executives wanted their artists to be on some heavily listened, or heavily watched programming. I do remember this Video was big on Video Soul and VH1. Shortly after Vanessa released the 1988 Right Stuff Album, a tape was released showing Vanessa talking about each video she did for this album. For The Right Stuff single, she talks about how disappointed she was at seeing the finished edit and how "a lot of the dance scenes were cut out and left on the cutting room floor". She said "I don't know if the angles weren't right, or the dancers messed up, but at least I got to show people I can dance in He's Got The Look". Vanessa was away in Europe when filming finished on the Right Stuff single, and during the editing process, she was not able to be part of the final edit. It kills me to know many dance scenes were cut out (notice some of the song is also cut out in the video), because this is still one of my favorite music videos ever. Such a great slammin song.

Nia Peeples was an actress from Fame, so she was known more for that so it was seen as her being more marketable to Vanessa at first. Vanessa would have been classed as a model. And race played a factor throughout the industry. Mercury Records wasn't even known as a Black Music label. More Rock and Pop. MCA and Motown were the place to be.

  • @tara3870

@@matthewprince9705 yes, and on top of that, they wouldn't even play Vanessa's music on MTV. They actually made Nia a VJ which was insane. She always managed to sneak her vids on there when she was hosting too. I found her quite clumsy 'cause she was always fumbling her lines. She wasn't a good VJ at all. She got all these opportunities and favorable deals & she still couldn't make fetch happen. Vanessa found a home with VH1 though and they eventually gave her her own show as well. She stood the test of time in all fields of entertainment and is still marketable today.

Additionally, I can see the influences of Janet's "When I Think of You" and "What Have You Done For Me Lately"! You nailed it Vanessa. I still have this cd!
