Vancouver Island | The Mosquitoes of my Discontent

Episode 14 - After 37 days of non-stop riding and filming I have a very emotional day and struggle to learn from the experience. The riding has not been particularly difficult, but there are other challenges I face trying to film my journey the way that I want to. And then the mosquitoes...

We do enjoy your content. Even if you feel like not getting the shots/scenes/... you strive for - we are happy with your content. Don't let your work/travel/vloging become something that makes you unhappy when you think about it. I'm not an expert, but maybe just slow your pace, production-wise. Get some me-time by taking a day off and then another one, for as long as you need to. spend quality time in a hotel with nice food, or go for a hike. Whatever floats your boat. You deliver content plentyful and regularly. And it's top notch. Slowing your pace won't change that impression.

As a fellow KZreadr and motorcycle traveler, I have to say that this is my favorite video you have made. I consider your videos to be a master class on film making, and something I aspire to, but sometimes they are so good that they paint motorcycle travel as this romantic, idealistic experience. My experiences on the road are always a combination of beautiful scenery, great roads, amazing people and also a few hard times or issues that I have to deal with. This video is real and shows that even someone with your talent and experience has struggles. I applaud you for being vulnerable and showing us what is real!

This video is brilliant, honest and vulnerable. I could feel myself right there with him, getting eaten alive and wondering WTF I was doing out there! Thing is… when you get home after a trip like this, the sense of accomplishment is so rewarding, and while you may wanna take a break, you also can’t help but to start planning the next journey! 🤣

Fellow KZreadr here, I’ve been riding to the Arctic Ocean every year for the last 6 years. I ride alone and often camp in remote locations. Yes, the mosquitoes, bears and often horrible weather can push you to your limits. I took bear spray on my first trips but now I don’t even bother. No good way to escape the mosquitoes, plenty of deet and a head net is about it. I don’t even check the weather anymore, I just tough it out. I’m 74, if I give up now I’ll never get back in the groove.

In a weird backwards way, this is one of the most inspiring videos I have ever seen. As someone who has been in this situation many times and then see everyone portray this life style as only positive, how refreshing it is to see a fellow adventurer share the struggles I have also faced. The irony is, one day you will look back and can't wait to be miserable all over again.

You’ve certainly presented your emotions to a new level in this video Sterling, it comes through on the last couple of videos that things were heading in the wrong direction. The rawness when your at your worst…harrowed and haggard in your hoody, waging battle against the mozzies and your mind, yet, you still keep on recording to present what you do so well…tell a story through your images. We have bad days, then we have even worse, but there will be beautiful ones too that make it all the more worthwhile. Take it easy, take care of yourself and hope you get back on that big horse to ride some more spectacular sunsets.

Thanks for sharing the "human transformation" experience that you are having on this trip. Truely amazing that you can share this journey with an audience that is attentive to your message. Your positivity ALWAYS shines through in all of your videos, so there is no need to apologize for any negative content. Honesty and vulnerability are virtues not to be dismissed. I look forward to the rest of your journey no matter what it brings. I'm a long time Northwest motorcyclist, hiker backpacker and have spent many evenings sheltering in my tent from the mosquitoes. Not sure I would trade that with the dust storm you endured earlier in the desert on this trip. You ARE an inspiration, thank you.

Intense discomfort from those insects is a very clear memory. Planted trees out there and the bugs did drive more than a few to the brink of madness. I truly appreciate that you were so genuine in this video. I think we all have this idealistic view of what we imagine certain things will be like. It rarely turns out how we imagine it to be but every once in a while it all comes together to give us that wonderful experience we imagined. I think that’s what keeps us motivated to push on. Life should be viewed like a string of pearls. The pearls are the occasional gems we encounter throughout life while the string is the majority of our lives being the struggles, challenges and monotony. Don’t view your lows as negative’s for us to see. Your an inspiration. We are all human. Love these videos. Thanks so much.

I think a number of us can relate. Crappy weather or bugs can alter an experience. Without the bugs, you could relax in you hammock or wander around a bit. Same goes if you hit days on end of rain. Both those things will confine you to your tent and frankly, that’s not much fun. As you mentioned , highs and lows while traveling are to be expected. The lows just make the highs that much better. Thanks for a great video.

Seriously, this brings you to the "human" level, not that I want to see you struggle but it makes it real, that you have the same things to deal with that I do on a lot of my trips. This has to be one of my favorite motorcycle camping videos of all time. Thanks so much for not making a fake video just to get those views. I've been where you are in this video and it's really great to see others have also been there. It's not all IG pics and amazing views. Sometimes the flow just isn't there. Thank you again.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that has been in this situation. The last big one month adventure for me ended in a self induced Iron Butt from south of SLC to north of Seattle in one long day because I hit a very low spot mentally. Unseasonably hot weather in late September tipped the scales of fun, and I bolted. Thank you for sharing this, it now makes a little more sense.

So many others have already said it better than I could hope to, but this episode brings more reality to adventure riding than so many others where it's always sunshine, clear blue skies and no extraneous issues. But that's not reality. Mother Nature has a vote on any trip and, being on two wheels with a tent, that may not be in our favor. Keep up the great content and a positive attitude.

Don’t worry about being negative. You are being honest and showing the human aspect of your travels which makes this video even more realistic. Life is not always all peaches and cream. You are tired. So, go get some rest buddy.

Thanks for keeping it real. Watching your videos is an immersive experience. We want to share a wonderful experience with you, but there is always yin and yang. It's not realistic to expect all good, regardless of your vast experience and preparation. One aspect that fascinates me is the extent to which external events impact my mood, and how that contributes to future experiences as they unfold. Once things start going bad and my mood sours, on a deeply subconscious level I create my own negative reality as things go from bad to worse. I'm aware of the phenomenon and try to consciously correct it when I see it happening but it's not easy. For me, a sudden acute problem - a crash, injury, mechanical failure - isn't as problematic as continual adversity that emotionally wears me down - a week of cold and wet weather, mosquitoes, etc. Mosquitoes in particular are a spirit devouring torment. I took an extended canoe camping trip to northern Wisconsin in the mid 70s. During the day, the mosquitoes and biting flies took turns. At night, it was all mosquitoes. It was the first year I had a tent with mosquito netting and I recall thinking that a person could die from anemia if left unprotected. The mosquitoes formed a half inch thick buzzing gray mass over the tent's mosquito netting. The incessant buzzing noise was creepy and loud enough to keep me awake. I had to cover my ears to sleep. I was forced to exit the tent to go to the bathroom. I dove out as quickly as possible although that probably admitted hundreds of mosquitoes. I ran as fast as I could from the local mosquito cloud, holding my breath to avoid leaving a carbon dioxide trail for the mosquitoes to follow. I pooped as fast as possible but was covered in mosquitoes. I wiped my hands across my thighs and forearms and left red-gray sheets of my own blood mixed with smeared mosquitoes. It was a scene from an alien horror movie. When I went camping in Alaska in 2008, I packed loose fitting clothes that covered me from head to foot, including gloves and a hooded GoreTex parka with an added large mosquito head net. It was a hassle but manageable. We tried to stay in bright sun and strong wind to avoid most of the mosquitoes. One thing that helps me in adverse times is to surrender to the situation. Instead of trying to fight it, deliberately sitting in the smoke of a campfire trying to keep the mosquitoes at bay (20:30), I set up camp as quickly as possible and jump in my hammock, safe inside the mosquito netting. I hate being forced to abandon my camping experience but it's better than suffering while trying to salvage it as my mood worsens. In such times, it's good to have a book to read, or an audio book. These days, we can have a few movies to watch on a tablet. It's kinda cool to lay in the hammock, cozy as can be, with the tablet in the gear loft like a big screen TV at that short distance. In one sense it's a surrender to the mosquitoes or the rain, but in a different mindset it's an elegant triumph over the adversity. I look forward to your next video, and hope it's a better adventure for you.

Sterling, thank you for being brutally honest in this mosquito episode. Life will shove us into some nasty situations. Dealing with it, and sharing the situation can only demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism and personal character. Mosquitos and ticks are just revolting creatures and you manage to rise above their torment.

You've bounced back long before this video aired (I hope). Cheers from the sunny B.C. Okanagan. I'm looking forward to the 49er Rally in Mariposa, CA. May 25-28, 2023.

Thank you for this video Sterling. I remember so well those feelings on a few occasions during my travels. I remember so well not feeling in synch with myself and with the world. As bad as those moments are I also remember how good I felt when things fell back into place, that silver lining after the clouds cleared feeling. I love this series! Thank you!
