Van Life: When comments can be foolish & dangerous,

Ойын-сауық

I recently aired a video about a senior couple who were traveling and camping in their rv enjoying their retirement when tragedy struck after they crossed paths with a predator at a rest stop in Nebraska. In this video I address how some people are in denial and how I believe that can be a very dangerous thing, especially as it prevents people from taking proper precautions whether living as nomads or living in a traditional home. Let me know in the comments if you agree or disagree with me.

When I hear people especially in the US say to not fear monger given the absolute levels of violence there anywhere actually is dillusional. The female van lifers getting out of van at night, camping in middle of nowhere with no signal is beyond dangerous

💗Prey or easy target, the same. Year ago at mid-day I stopped my car at a deserted rest stop on the California coast just to open my back door and get a cold drink I couldn't reach. No going to the bathroom, no. In a split second a guy was a few feet away from my elbow saying he wanted to ask me something-lickety split I hopped in the front, slammed the door and locked. He pulled at my door handle but I gunned it and was out of there. Fast. There was malice in this creep's face, no mistaking it. Lucky me that day. You can NEVER warn people to be careful too much. Anyone who whines about it is a petulant child who probably never takes advice from anyone, and probably never did from their own parents. As others have said, Thank you for keeping it real! 💗

I was on Newport Beach had my new solar equipment charging and I went away from people just to be by the ocean and at this guy at a nowhere suddenly was there looking at my equipment and I said hi and he just gave me the face and I looked at him like I am not gonna let you take my things and I kind of puffed up and he walked away. I guess it was foolish but $1500 worth of equipment. I wasn’t gonna let him have it and I’m 71 female, but I’m strong and I’m smart and maybe I was foolish, but I wasn’t gonna let him have it. My instincts told me that he wasn’t violent.

Thank you for keeping it REAL. Take the rose-colored glasses off, people. Approach vanlife with your eyes wide open (& your head on a swivel). We look left & right when we cross the street at a four way stop (Ronald Reagan said, "Trust, but verify."). Why would it be any different at a gas station, truck stop, rest area or anywhere else? Be vigilant. Be safe. (and as Robin Barrett says) Be Free!

This is why. I don't want a lot of big Van channels because they do just that. Sell people a Fairytale story that Van life is perfect. It's awesome, sell your house. Sell your stuff, sell everything and live in a Van and down the river's gonna be sweet. It's not always like that. People don't realize that the truth is truth. This is why love about your channel. My dear cause you Gloria, you tell it like it is? Yes, you have fun times and you have bad times and you tell us both. This is why I love your channel. Cause you're a real you don't sell. People lies you sell people the truth. If we put on a haircut block, you go somewhere else.

Months ago I commented on a woman’s KZread channel and then received a few upset comments back. These upset people seemed to have their head in the sand and my comments were to inform, not monger. And now everybody, including the women’s channel that I made the comments in a few months ago, are finding this type of info valid. I was saying “be careful” and don’t get yourself in these situations. The owner of the channel just let it pass and did not utter one word to help. And now she is doing videos about the same things I mentioned. Carol just apologized to a commenter for misunderstanding a comment. Good for you Carol, you have the heart and brains to “warn” people and the kindness to admit a misunderstanding.

Sticks and bricks dweller here. You are 100% correct. Caution is necessary, especially now with the issues people are dealing with. So we had been in this house for a few days. The front door has half window so I put up a curtain. A woman started banging on my door and shaking it by the doorknob like she was trying to break in. So I pulled back the curtain and asked her what her problem was. She stared at me for a few seconds then asked if this was xxxx's house. I'm already ticked off ok. Then she's like I was told that....That's all I heard. I was like get off my porch now!!! I have an automatic hole puncher if you know what I mean, so she walked away. Then I noticed she had a kid with her. Looked to be about 3. So I watched her. A guy pulled up and they were talking and it looked like he was telling her where to go next. No telling what their game was!

Your reaction to that comment is how I feel a lot of the times. It’s easy for people to say “it’s just the internet” but no it’s not. These people really feel the way they type and some are just crazy enough to act on their feelings and opinions with no consideration to others… good riddance to them. Being informed is what has helped me have such a blissful time on the road.

First time commenter, but not my first video of yours. Sometimes, i think we are far removed from all that preparedness that we had as children. Remember fire drills, the threat of the bomb dropping, childhood diseases like polio? We prepared for them, not because we were fear mongering, but because a well prepared person has a higher degree of surviving an incident, IF they are prepared. I am a 71 yr old nomad traveling with my daughter and DIL in a 5th wheel for 4 years now. I give you and other solo female nomads so much credit. I'm not sure that i could do this on my own. Thank you for facing the criticism to be here for us. God bless your journey. ❤🦋

I'm 57 people are getting meaner. I'm a loner more than ever out of protection against the evil. I pray for strength, because it's hard to keep being good in a world of evil. Vanlife is hard, it not all bad, but the economy and people everything has gone down hill. I can't even afford section eight they raised my rent after signing a lease after four months for $205. I have to move right back in my van. I either have to pick an apartment or a car payment. The wages suck. In Portland Oregon the wages are the lowest in the West Coast, but our rents are like Seattle. Life is what you make it. I just make my little van my home. I thank God for Bob Wells and channel like this that support Vanlife, because living in a van there's a stigma, but the real stigma is being poor in the United States. They don't want to own up to paying people such a horrible wage that they have to live out of a vehicle. The real crime in this country is GREED! Peace and light and love.

I remember Ted Bundy.. he was caught in my hometown area. I keep my house and vehicle locked even if I am just sitting in the car at the grocery store before or after shopping. I have had people come up to me while pumping gas and I put my hand out and say "stop" (since they don't have sense enough to know not to approach someone that is alone and might be armed). After that, THEY are on guard that I will not be played easily. I have had two instances of women approaching me.. one was truly angry that I told her to go into the gas station to get money/phone whatever, and the other one wanted a "ride" to which I directed her to the taxi at the next pump.. The lady driving the taxi said "I don't give free rides!"... so that settled that situation... but the SCARY part of that one... was that I watched her leave... cross the street and meet up with her very large male companion waiting..... Don't fall for any sob stories and keep your vehicle locked even if you are sitting in it!!!

Carol you are so EXACTLY RIGHT about being careful and the attitude in the comment. When an attitude of ‘I just wanna have fun’ is there you lose focus and that can KILL your fun!! The unfortunate truth is there are more bad actors out there than there used to be and we must be aware! As a solo older female on the road I simply plan to be careful, I watch everything around and evaluate my surroundings, the direction my vehicle is aimed etc. like I pick the gas pump on the end so no one will pull in front of me, if I have to walk into a station or store, I say to my van “OK I’ll be back in a minute” implying I am not alone. I lock my van even while I am standing at the gas pump! I always have a simple bucket potty in my vehicle so I do not have to walk into a restroom if I am in a sketchy place or a rest stop with too few people around. Walk with purpose and look around, do not look like an easy mark. I keep an extra fanny pack in my vehicle so I can put a few dollars in it and not carry my whole purse with all my info in it when going in a gas station store, buy 2 things like someone is with me. I always think, what if, & plan for the possible unexpected. This isn’t hard, it has become second nature, on the road or in my home. I do not do this our of fear but for my security, when I feel prepared I HAVE FUN! I LOVE being on the road and enjoy my travels because I am prepared. You always have great videos, thanks

All of us benefit from these videos sharing how we can travel safely even in our cars. Please continue to share. I plan to put your advice to good use as I travel in my car, alone. And telling the stories of people facing hardships. If you don't tell how are we to know. It's people like you doing real good in the world. Thank you for all that you are doing.

Carol, being in denial about the dangers of being on the road is common. Some people are in denial about many things, from Religion to Prepping and everything in between. Good for you for speaking the truth! Fear mongering is NOT the same as warning people to be realistic and always stay alert and aware. If people want to take dangerous risks, they have only themselves to blame when bad things happen. I very much appreciate all your content. If some are offended by it, that is their problem; personally, I would much rather know the truth and be safe!

I went back to that video a couple of times to read the comments. One comment that stuck with me was a woman that said to carry bear spray. It’s hard to stab someone when you’re gasping for air. I don’t know, but it seems like we’re headed into a degenerating society that you’d see in old futuristic movies where society has gone to hell. It actually makes me feel pretty fortunate to be old. I feel fearful for my kids and grandkids that are going to have to carve out a life in this mess.

It is such a different world from the one I grew up in also. At 71 I look around at a society where mass shootings are common place, drive bys are the norm, and trafficking is so prevelant we can't let our kids out of our sight outside even in our front yards. I shudder to think of what it will be like when my 21 yr old has children.

I wonder what would have happened if the man had given the guy the keys, then as soon as he got in the Jeep, took off as fast he could to the nearest police station, with guy in tow! Even if they were in an unfamiliar area, wife could have called police, GPS police station. Of course hindsight.... I love that you are everyone's " Auntie Carol" 💗 We have to be aware of potential dangers, but not paranoid. I , too, dislike travel channels that pretend that nothing ever bad happens . If you know it can, you can be more relaxed when you know what to look for, and most importantly, know what actions you are prepared to take. We had a few rest area situations that scared me. Things like people having mental/ drug issue breakdowns at 2 am, domestic situations, and strange folks. One time, we were afraid to leave, thinking it would draw more attention to us. I wonder about our barky dogs being an issue sometimes because they might tick off someone already upset Most people think of having a dog as security, but ours, not so much. You can't stay stealth when they are going off! I pray 🙏 for wisdom about these situations. Each rest area has a different vibe, and as others have noted, it just takes one person having a very bad day, or life, to change that energy. The time that really had me scared, the guy drive in about 2 am, and up until then everything was peaceful. Flexibility is important. I have taken some chances going potty at 3 or 4 am. ( Totally different topic - but does anyone know what is up with folks that jam the toilets with toilet paper and trash the restroom???) I love your honesty. Truly , your law enforcement background, and walk with the LORD , experience on the road, and in life, gives you wisdom to share. When I travel it is with my husband, which gives me a certain amount of security; when I was single I had a vehicle I could have camped in and thought about it, but never did because I was too scared. Shout out to all the brave and smart women out there!🎉 🙏 Thank-you.

Since discovering van life on KZread and noticing it is mostly single women alone and on their own, I have been concerned with the safety of all of you. I pray for you and others like you that God will protect you and keep you safe. I pray that he will sharpen your instincts and make you hyper aware of a predator. You are not fear mongering. You are warning us all of real danger out there. I live in Missouri and there was a murder last week a block away from my apartment complex. I am 69 and crippled up with arthritis. When I go anywhere my daughter goes with me. I can only imagine how vulnerable you are on the road. May God bless and keep you.💜🙏🌹

I uave not read the decision and as such am not prepared to address it specifically. However, anything that basically identifies people as criminals because they are poor is unAmerican and a national disgrace, especially when you consider that many of those so classified are veterns who risked their lives for this country.
