Gotta be honest I think Eddie did get robbed in the rankings. He holds 13 patents, invented tapping guitar style of play, and is the 6th of all time for albums sold I believe in total. On top of all of that disco was topping to charts kind of pushing rock back out of the main stream in the late 70s, it was Van Halen who them all on notice. When the band came on the scene he completely reinvented rock n roll. Why? Because in the words of DLR “We rock the house, but you can also dance to the tune”. When Van Halen came on the scene, everyone before him was irrelevant, and those who came after wanted to be him.

What Dad wouldn't want to be onstage with his son especially if the son had the chops to be up there. I don't begrudge him one bit. Especially now that he's no longer with us. I can't believe that in my 71 years of all the rock in the world from Elvis to today that I would be crying listening to hard guitar rock, but here it is. You always expect your music heroes (especially my guitar gods) to live forever, but EVH's passing hit me hard and by surprise. These takes are incredible and Roth notwithstanding, are the most amazing, untarnished live performances from one of the best bands ever and, to me, the greatest guitarist I have ever seen and heard. RIP, my musical hero. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

This is one of the best live performances of Van Halen ever captured. The music is tight, the harmonies nearly perfect. Uncle Alex and nephew Wolfie lay down a rhythm section of pure power and punch. Roth, the consummate showman, still hitting some high notes and high kicks. Eddie...just having a great time with his family while he shreds the fretboard as if he were sleep walking. What makes this performance extra special is Eddie and Wolfie, Father and Son, ROCKING OUT THE CLASSICS together! I just wish they had played Top Jimmy! RIP EVH - you are sorely missed!

He seems a very professional musician, but I can't believe the backing vocals are totally coming from Wolf and Eddie. Listen at 11:25... It sounds like there's a recording being played. It's almost exactly as the studio version (and I have no problem with that).

You always expect your music heroes (especially my guitar gods) to live forever, but EVH's passing hit me hard and by surprise. I've seen a lot of crap posted about VH lately and as someone who's been a fan for 35 years, just want to point out a few things to some of the bashers: 1. Eddie looks and is playing better than he has in YEARS. He's cleaned himself up immensely. Some have criticized his lack of new material. The guy has nothing to prove. He invented the 80s rock sound everyone copied. The guy will be 60 this year. You don't hear Clapton coming up with new stuff, do you? And Clapton was Eddie's main influence. Ed is just letting the body of his career's work speak for itself and going out and having fun playing it for the fans. Give Al a lot of credit. He always seemed to be the glue to hold the band together and keep Eddie from self destructing....... 2. To the DLR critics: When has David Lee Roth ever sang well live? When has he acted anything less than bizarre on stage? He sounds great on the records within the confines of the studio but was never a great live singer even in the early 80s in his prime. The guy is a frontman and entertainer, that's it. Plus he's over 60 now. He never had range in his voice and was never someone brought into the conversation of great vocalists. Dave was always about working the crowd for the VH brothers and connecting with the fans. That's what he's good at. And he's still doing it......3. No kidding that Wolfie isn't Michael Anthony. But the kid can still hold his own on bass. What's lacking is Michael Anthony's backing vocals. He was the one that was behind the distinguished VH sound and made Dave sound better than he really was. That said, I think having Wolf in the band is what has kept Eddie as sober as he's been. Ed has admitted that being an example for his son, is what keeps him in line now. Take Wolf out of the band, and Eddie is libel to run off the rails again........4. VH fans think back to '85 when you heard DLR was leaving and how much it sucked and how you'd give anything to get them back together again. They're back, not fighting (for now), having fun, put out a solid album in 2012, and touring again. I never imagined 30 years ago I'd be sitting here today and being able to take my sons to see Van Halen in concert this summer. I don';t care that they are 60 and over, going bald, and Eddie has dentures. I don't care that David's already below average singing voice is even more below average. I don't care if Eddie is going to play Eruption for the millionth time and hasn't made another better solo instead. All that matters is that they are back playing live, and doing so without the drama of the first reunion attempt. We all know what they were in their prime, their impact in the 70s and 80s, and what their contribution to the soundtrack of our youth was. Now let's just go out there, and have as much fun watching them as they are having playing for us again and stop trying to be Siskel and Ebert here. I'm taking my 10 and 7 year old sons to see them in September. They can't wait and neither can I. They will have a chance to take a glimpse into their own Dad's youth and see some legends of rock at the same time. I am grateful for that. Thank you Ed, Al ,and Dave!!

Chris B Unfortunately, Chris, you're operating out of pure nostalgia for something that has been lost to history. You're not taking your kids to see Van Halen. You're taking your kids to see three sixty year-old men pretending to be Van Halen. I'm glad Eddie is healthy. And I don't necessarily want him to retire. But I would like him to retire the '80s Van Halen schtick and show us that he has more skill than just finger tapping and dive bombs; that his musical talent has depth that exceeds Eruption. His playing was unique and over the top in 1984. Today, it's no big deal. Frankly, the most interesting aspect of the Kimmel event was when Dave clonked himself in the head and was forced to shut the f%%$K up long enough for Ed and Al to noodle around and improv.
