killer tone, groove and true knowledge of the crazy syncopated rhythm and timing that only Eddie and Alex are capable of creating. Playing certain Van Halen Rhythms (a more primitive example is the second part of d the verse to unchained when the lyrics go to "But you never missed me til I gotta a fat city address, non-stop talker, what a rocker, blue eyed murder in a size 5 dress" the timing goes to 7/8 - I think-and the groove switches to one that matches the imagery of the "non-stop talker" gold digger bimbo. I wonder what she is doing at his fat city address that causing her to talk so much and create that awkward vibe. The genius of great Van Halen Tunes (especially with Roth's lyrics is the intro music sets up the angry but confident decision to get rid of the this gorgeous, but totally crazy gold digging drug addicted (note the tension that the crazy timing and lyrics create only to resolve to the chorus . The reason this groove reminds me of unchained (although it had a cabo Wabo, Summer Bights flavor) is the flip flop of the verse and chorus. In the beginning of the verse he says light em up and everyone is excited and optimistic about Amsterdam, then when the buzz kicks in the choruses timing creates tension as if the buzz is stronger than anticipated (it's like they are excited approaching the top of the Roller Coaster, but that first drop is a bit of a shock to the system. Anyhow, whether I am over analyzing the tune, you are one of the few players that understands Eddies rhythmically brilliant playing, extremely unique timing while retaining that filthy groove., Most players miss that critical element of the Van Halen sound because they focus on individual techniques (as opposed to trying to get inside EVH's head so they never understand Van Halen it uses what's necessary to express the vibe but never thinks about techniques. That's what distinguishes his playing from the generation of shred guys that cite EVH as an influence. Then rather than focus on trying to cop his relaxed, groove, massive vibrato, timing and dynamics, they think in terms of gear, tapping. pinch harmonics, tremolo picking, whammy bar dive bombs and quirky symmetrical scale patterns (in an effort to try and mimic the reckless lead playing that sounds like at any minute everything could go off the rails but it doesn't because he always lands on his feet just like a cart. Unlike imitators, however, he is more like Holdsworth or McLaughlin meaning he is in full control even when he sounds like he is out of control. In other words, he is not relying on finishing a prerehearsed scale pattern just to land on the tonic at the end. He is always in a position where he is instinctively aware of all the entrances and exits of the musical landscape he has created while he simultaneously explores the frontiers that he made possible the way a painter or director creates a general image that gives everyone from the special effects team, the stunt crew, the soundtrack creator and the actors the freedom and flexibility to bring their expertise to the project. the difference is that Eddie wears all of these hats yet managed to play each role as if he is not the guy who created the set but a brilliant improvisation expert who had found a fresh new background that he is discovering.
