Rig Rundown: Mammoth WVH
Музыка
Full Rig Details: bit.ly/MammothWVHRR
Following in a parent’s professional footsteps is daunting. Imagine re-treading that ground in the public eye. Now conceptualize walking in the footsteps of one of the greatest guitarists to ever live. Succeeding on any level seems impossible. So where do you start when trying to find your own voice on an instrument your dad basically reconstructed?
“The main thing, when I started doing this, was that I wanted to find my own sort of sound and not do everything dad did,” says Wolfgang Van Halen. “When it came to guitar, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I just wanted to sound like myself.”
After 15 years in the family band (and working alongside Mark Tremonti for his solo project), that’s what Wolf did when he wrote and tracked all the instruments on the 15 songs for his debut album, Mammoth WVH, released last year. (The title is a nod to the original name of his father’s and uncle’s iconic band during 1972-’74.)
Things have changed since we last checked out Wolf’s setup. Back in 2012, when PG got the special treat of swooping into Bridgestone Arena to check out the rigs of Eddie and Wolf. We got to see the various Wolfgang models dad brought out, and Wolf’s custom-made one-off basses constructed by master builder Chip Ellis.
Now Wolf is playing guitar and singing lead. He’s flanked by two additional guitarists (Frank Sidoris and Jon Jourdan), while bass and drums are handled by Ronnie Ficarro and Garrett Whitlock (respectively). There’s still a lot of his dad’s thumbprint on the band’s setup, but there’s two new things afoot. This tour saw two new prototypes unveiled: a signature semi-hollow for Wolf and beefy, humbucker-loaded basses were being road-tested (or, as the Van Halens say, in the “crash-testing phase”).
“Through writing and recording that first album, and having fun, I ended up tracking most with a 335 and that semi-hollowbody sound became the baseline for all of Mammoth WVH,” says Wolf. So, he and Ellis sought to combine reverence for the EVH legacy with something fresh for not only Wolf’s sound but to expand the company’s appeal. “I want to make something that has the DNA of the EVH brand, but something that they don’t offer.”
Before a headlining show at the Signal in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on May 17th, PG traveled south down I-24 to see what was percolating in the EVH and WVH camps. We were fortunate enough to be joined by Ellis and Van Halen, who talked about the development of the new SA-126 semi-hollow guitar and then focused on the new thunder-stick 4-string prototype that’s being “crash tested” by bandmate Ronnie Ficarro. Additionally, we cover the setups of riff warriors Sidoris (also of Slash feat. Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators) and Jourdan (To Whom It May), who fly the EVH flag but bring their own shine.

Also that Eddie's humbucker in the original Frankenstrat was taken from a 335 and rewound by Seymour Duncan.
I don’t like hollow bodies but congrats to Wolf for continuing to develop EVH gear. 5150 lives on. I miss Eddie so much.
Now here is a guy who, despite his bloodline, found his sound and perfect situation...phenomenal musician!!!!!!!! love all his stuff!!!!
Wolfie is so spectacular, what an articulate respectable young man. Not spoiled or entitled. Great parenting
love that Kyuss shirt
Eddie might be gone but his legacy still lives on! Rock on Wolf 🤘
It’s nice to hear the spontaneity Wolf has with effects on songs. And talking about the guitars as they’re developing and testing them. It’s just a fun vibe.
Nice addition to the EVH line. I'm not a hollow body fan myself, but I'm sure a good amount of people are. Just shows how different Wolf and his dad are: Wolf doesn't like the 335 neck because it feels too big, yet Eddie said for some reason he could "blaze on a 335." That's a tough shadow to step out of, but the guy is doing very well for himself by BEING himself.

I love hollowbodies, from Alvin Lee to Chuck Berry to BB King and even some early Clapton. Can be problematic on stage but tone to die for. WVH holds tons of promise, his pedigrees is both a asset and liability - talk about the shadow he has to deal with! It doesn’t seem like he’s hit his stride identity-wise but no reason he shouldn’t…..it would be great if he collaborated with some other artists, guested on some tracks here and there. Get some “been there” musical tattoos…
It's so good to see Wolfgang be noticed for his own thing, even though his dad was and still is my idol im proud to see this and im sure his father is watching as well and is most proud of all.
Wolf is such a class act, great video.

I hope you get a chance to see him live. I've seen both EVH and WVH, and I literally had tears in my eyes watching Wolf play. We saw him in a small club in Austin, and he was the nicest, most humble front man I've ever seen. It was like hanging out with a buddy. And then he'd proceed to play, and it felt like it was decades earlier watching Ed. I remember watching that Smithsonian Institute interview with Eddie, and in it he said something along the lines of "oh, I'm okay, but wait until you hear Wolf's album," and I thought, yeah, right. That's just a dad being lovingly boastful of his son. But it wasn't. Ed wasn't BSing.

It's a bit more slash than Eddie isn't it... Tone wise? And playing style as well as supposed.. Actually.... To be fair.. he is sitting right in the middle between Slash and Eddie. I think that's a pretty cool result. It's how we all come up with our nown tones and styles... Combine all our favourite guitarists traits.. become a Hodge podge.. a new thing all unto itself. It's yet another take on the cross between a Stratocaster and a Les Paul... Or es-335 actually in this case. But so many artists have done their own take of the blending of Les Paul and Strat. Eddie's own guitars have always been a mix of the famed two. And nearly every other guitarist... From David Grisham... To Steve lukather... To Steve Vai... Even Keith Richards' fat teles were mixes between telly's and Les Pauls So many different fat strats and ergonomic mahogany single cuts or fat teles... Just like so many different players with their owns Styles and tones... All traceable back to similar origins. It's pretty cool. It's the story of humankind really..
