By not connecting your intake hose to the outside, you are using your cooled inside air to cool your compressor which in turn exhausts that air to the outside. The air that the unit cools circulates from the front and exhausts through the cool air tube. You'll also create a vacuum that will cause outside air to be pulled in whereever it finds a pathway to do so, increasing the work the unit has to do to cool the inside air.

About the "Why are mountaintops cooler than valleys if heat rises" question: Heat DOES indeed rise, but as it rises it also expands because the higher in elevation about ground that you go, the lesser the pressure. Air pressure at sea level is 14.7psi, but the pressure at 18,500 feet is 7.35psi. That means that as the hot air rises, it expands. As it expands, it cools (air conditioners work on the same principle). Back-of-the-napkin math says that for every 1,000' in elevation rise in dry air, you'll lose enough energy in a given volume of air to decrease the temperature by 5.4 degrees F. Baker is at 942 feet. The highest point in Death Valley is at 14,505 feet. That means if it's 100f in Baker, it will be ~27f on top of Mt. Whitney.

You need 2 hoses so you don't suffer from 'vacuum' effect! If you don't use an intake hose at night, after an hour of 2 the temp inside will go up because the vacuum effect will bring hot air in from all cracks! Sounds strange but its true, we've seen it with portables, and got a 2 hose portable and it works great.

Death valley is hot because the heat never fully rises (it gets trapped in the valley). The air gets thrown back into the sea bed and reheated instead of escaping.

I feel you on trying so hard and never being able to make it on your own. I worked for years for others and in recent times I've been an "independent contractor" which has given me a lot of freedom but I'm still stuck in the same place for the most part. I have tried once, so far, to do a "car life" vlog and it failed miserably because, even though i did my usual thing of taking photos (I'm more of a photographer than being a vlogger) so I can make my own unique style of videos, my car also broke down at the end of 2 wks on my way back home. I was trying it out for the first time, my car was also way too small and I definitely need a van...but I"m not giving up, I'm getting a minivan next because i have no way to get something like you have...maybe one day. I also SUCK at vlogging because I am SOOOOO camera shy...I am not well, fit so I just feel like my face is totally fat on camera (although I am trying to lose weight) and that I just don't have a good voice or personality for being on camera...so I really struggle with that aspect...I'm not funny or ironically weird...just kinda simple and boring...I honestly don't think people will want to hear any of what I got to say....but i guess I have to try anyways cuz my style of videos has only brought me 81 subscribers in about a year...even tho i think they are pretty awesome...I will be traveling w/my cat tho...he's the star! lol....hopefully it will eventually get there!

Taking a stab at your question on why mountaintops are cooler than valleys if heat rises. My best guess is that the sun heats up the earth so the ground would be the hottest and as hot air rises from the earth it starts to cool the further it gets so it's cooler on the mountaintop because of the higher elevation. Upon searching google, apparently it has something to do with the lower air pressure.

  • @7eardstapa7

Yes, it’s all about air density. Less air means less heat trapping molecules. That’s why space is freezing. Now, radiant energy is higher in space because there’s no insulation from the atmosphere, which is why if you’re in the sun in space, the side of you that’s facing the sun will fry while your backside will freeze. Weird, but that’s reality.

Because the Sierra Nevada Mountains block the Westerly winds and low temperatures from reaching the valley floor during the summer months; thus, you can succumb to "hyperthermia- too hot". HOWEVER, it is the opposite during the Winter months and you can actually succumb to "hypothermia- too cold" due to exposure. The joint ain't called DEATH-VALLEY for nothing. 🙄
