I like Van Buren. I was surprised that she as never promoted to Captain. But I guess it was implied that she never would be because she sued the department back in the day. I think it was 3 seasons later (from the season in this video). Curtis was Lenny's partner when it happened. Some background into it: she sued the department because they promoted another officer to Captain. Her and Buren got the same score on the test, but Buren has seniority over her. She argued that it was discriminatory (the other officer was a white woman). A judge dropped her case, but the damage was already done. They wanted her to quit. But as you know, she never did.

I remember this one. What finally cracks the case is her speaking to the mother of the boy that was killed. The mother reveals the boy... 3 жыл бұрын

@@yucol5661 I guess, to better explain the whole story: The defendant in the case was mugging her. When she shot him the bullet passed through him or by him and killed another kid, he just happened to be there with the defendant, I believe the mugging was kind of a spur-of-the-moment thing. So the defendant tried making up a story that it was the dead boy's intent to mug her, because he wanted to buy a gift for a girl he liked. She meets the mother of the boy who is actually killed and pleads with her. The mother has a change of heart and shows her that the boy had sold some valuable baseball cards and already had the gift ready and waiting before he died. Which pretty much sunk the defendant. At the end of the episode, Stone is talking to her. He humorously tells her that, if his father were in her place, there would have been two dead kids, not one. And Stone says he himself would have gotten a conviction as he kind of smiles at her.

Most cops will tell you this but since they aren't here to defend themselves I will: Good cops hate bad cops as much as the activists that hate all cops. The difference is that cops can see when a case just looks bad (IE a justified shoot with unfortunate consequences) and an unjustified shoot (Shooting a suspect in the back). This LOOKED like an unjustified shooting, as such the captain, who doesn't know Van Buren, is obviously and rightfully outraged. I'd also like to say that to sit here and judge a profession you know absolutely nothing about is plainly offensive, regardless of the profession. Maybe you should go for a ride-along and see what the profession is really like before you sit in your high chair and pass judgment.

I'm sorry, but I'm just going to go ahead and say, that, as a Precinct Sargent with the NYPD, Van Buren should've known better. She left those kids alone in an unlocked van, to, in the middle of the night, get out, alone, and use an ATM in a poorly lit alcove, in early 90's New York City? This scene is like a handbook case for everything any cop would know not to do.

Having a badge shouldn't give her a pass, but it should count for something. Yes, do a full background check. Make sure she she isn't spending more than she makes taking credit card debt into consideration. Put her through a psychiatric evall. But when and if that all comes back clean, start doing some digging. What motive would she have to gun down an unarmed boy? Has she shown cowardly propensities? Because shooting someone in the back is cowardly. To me, something just doesn't ring true here. The NYPD doesn't give command of precincts to those who have shown any kind of instability. If they don't trust you, you are not offered command. Of course there has to be an investigation any time there is an officer involved shooting. But don't go into it thinking the one being investigated is guilty (or even innocent for that matter). Go into it with the attitude, "I don't know which is why we are investigating."

I don't know what's with Hollywood and kids' ages They are teenagers. When I was 10, I was mediating arguments for my parents. By 16, those "boys" can impregnate a woman, be an effective part of a military combat unit, and be criminally charged.

What I hated about this was her character in multiple episodes always thought the idea of citizens carrying guns for protection was a bad idea, she has this horrific experience where even though shes acting as a normal citizen, she has a piece because shes a cop, and shoots someone in self defense, and after seeing that there is a legitimate place for concealed carry citizens because the police cant be everywhere, she never changes. She never changes her mind and considers ordinary civilians whi carry a gun to be paranoid cooks

@@davidinass uh no, she killed a mentally ill kid who had a gun because his "friends" put him up to it and he didnt know what he was really doing. Also, Cops are not well trained. Infact, minimum police training terrifies me because of how much it relies on individual officers training on their own time at their own expense. NYPD has more than most American cops. But even their standards are pitifully low. To call them well trained is like calling every person with a CDL a trained driver. In that yes they have been trained, but it is not a statement on their competency or skill. As well, as weve seen in statistics. Civilians with Concealed Weapons Permits actually commit fewer crimes than actual cops. Cops are convicted of felonies at 3 times the rate of citizens with a concealed weapons permit. According to the FBI and ATF.

She did get charged with murder but the grand jury didn't indict. The cops eventually figured it out: she tried to non fatally shoot the kid with the gun. The bullet passed through him and into his unarmed lookout behind him. That's how come he died and had no gun. Sad part was the kid was developmentally disabled and the true bad guy the kid who survived tricked him into it. In an emotional scene she had to go to the dead kids mother to get some proof to disprove the other kid's story in order to convict him. While the mother hated her they both wanted justice and to keep someone else from suffering the same fate
