Van Build Plumbing for $150! Simple Plumbing and Gray Tank Drain for Van Conversion- Water Foot Pump

Simple Van Build Plumbing for $150! Simple Plumbing and Gray Tank Drain for Van Conversion- Water Foot Pump
Whale Foot Pump Installation- Freshwater Galley Pump.
I was looking for a simple inexpensive solution for plumbing in my van conversion. The goal was to avoid having to use power, but still have running water.
I settled on a foot pump and the whale babyfoot fresh water galley pump worked great for what I needed! It is small, fastens to the floor and I was able to use a traditional faucet.
I wanted to be able to empty the gray water tank from inside the van. I ended up using a rain water drain and drilling a hole in the floor of the van. The drain can be emptied without leaving the van.
I installed the fresh and gray water systems over multiple days in my van build, so I wanted to make a video that showed the process all at once. Be sure to check out the full van build series for more!

    Very ingenious my setup will be bigger and use a 12 volt pump powered by the solar system but I like your idea good for you and thanks for the video.

    I love the 12volt option. I think they even have small single use battery ones that I considered, but you’ll like just having it hooked up to solar! This ended up working great for me.

    Forgive me if you’ve already explained but I didn’t understand why you needed the hose going out the floor. What is the purpose of? Is it to drain the grey water? Can the grey water just collect in the grey water container?

  • @LauraOnTheMove

    @LauraOnTheMove

    26 күн бұрын

    Hi! Yes, the reason was to just be able to drain the grey water easier. It was just a feature I wanted to avoid having to remove the grey water container and carrying it out of the van and emptying it. It worked out great, but is certainly not necessary.

    Do you have a link for the type of water shut off valve you used? I’m a little confused

  • @LauraOnTheMove

    You really need to go to a hardware store for this one. You'll need a 3 way compression shut off valve. 2 of them will connect to the faucet (one to cold water and one to hot. The 3rd will need to have a barb adapter and the barb fitting will connect to your hose. The sizes are very important so it is best to do it in the store and link everything together while you're there. I went to Lowes.

    I got it at Lowe’s. It’s a barb fitting with a hose clamp. I would recommend going. To the hardware store and piecing it all together there at the store.

    Could you link the valve that connects the two pipes on the tap to the pipe on the foot pump? Seems like a 3 way connection. Thanks!

  • @LauraOnTheMove

    @LauraOnTheMove

    Жыл бұрын

    It's a tricky one. I started with a 3 way adaptor with 3/8 compression fittings. The faucet connects to two of them. Hot and cold won't matter in this instance. You connect both and the water will flow through. Then you need to go from 3/8 compression to a 3/4 barb fitting. In all it was 3 pieces and I used thread tape to put them together. I would recommend going to a hardware store if possible that way you can fit the pieces together in the store to make sure you have what you need. It would also be comparable in price to shopping online for these specific items.

    You did not show you using the foot pump...wanted to see the pressure of the pump..does the pump make any noise?

  • @LauraOnTheMove

    @LauraOnTheMove

    Жыл бұрын

    I've never considered the pressure from the sink. You can actually control it some and push all of the water out fast with a ton of pressure in a second or push slower and have less water come out over a few seconds. The only sound is the suction of water into the pump and then the push of water out. You can hear it, but it isn't loud.

    The basket of the sink goes to the horizontal trap then I have an inexpensive elbow from the hardware store into the cap of the gray tank. I had to drill the hole in the cap for it to sit in but it’s the horizontal trap and elbow that make it happen. Hope that helps!

    Does your foot pump leak at all where the tubes attach mine does and I’m trying to figure out how to prevent this currently trying to see if some plumbers putty will work but at first glance I don’t think it will testing it out i keep finding areas that leak it’s not leaking right now but I’m trying to see if it’ll stay that way if I let it harden i’m not too optimistic but I might just be frustrated after fighting with this thing and it leaking all over my floor any suggestions

  • @LauraOnTheMove

    I haven’t had any issues with leaks. I did use pretty flexible tubing and I didn’t hesitate to really tighten then hose clamps. The hose clamps Sink into the hose and create that seal on my foot pump. Hopefully you find an answer because I do love the pump!

    if you don't have room for a gray water tank can you eliminate that and just have gray water empty directly through the hose to the bottom of the van?

  • @LauraOnTheMove

    @LauraOnTheMove

    2 жыл бұрын

    Some people do that, but you have to be careful about not dumping in places where it isn’t allowed. I spent a lot of time in national parks and they don’t allow dumping so it needs to be collected and emptied outside the park. I did however use only biodegradable soaps to give me more freedom on emptying it responsibly.
