I want a dark fantasy story where the adventuring party goes into a town because a string of bizarre murders and disappearances make them think the local aristocrat is a vampire. Only the twist is that, no, he really isn’t a vampire. He’s actually just a rich asshole who’s making their lives difficult. Like, he hired goons to commit murders that look supernatural to keep the locals living in fear of superstitious threats, so he can increase their taxes or create artificial scarcity or something. *BONUS credited to tyrongkojy: The adventuring party meet a townsperson along the way who secretly IS a vampire, and seriously doesn’t appreciate being blamed for class conflict. They would join the party, or otherwise help with the investigation.

A take on vampires that my PCs recently enjoyed: In my campaign, the vampires were a very neutral faction. They'd long ago given up the predatory lifestyle of their predecessors, choosing instead to live in the ruins of an old human city, and took to raising mortals like livestock. They keep the mortal livestock 100% healthy, and don't mistreat them, as it improves flavor. They fear "wild/untamed mortals", mostly because they've isolated themselves to the point where they almost never see a mortal who wasn't raised in captivity. The visiting PCs were something of a novelty to them, for this reason. Because they live forever, and getting food is easy for them, the culture is heavily artistic, materialistic, and very into partying. They had street performers, shops selling luxury goods, enchanted liquors that create flashy effects (like an edible, lifelike, gummy-dragon that emerges from the drink to stalk around the rim of the glass), and a tavern that is always open and packed. Because they live in a desert area where nothing grows, they have a park that is just a bunch of sand that a bunch of the vampire citizens drew various pieces of art into. Just sharing on the off-chance someone sees something that might give them an idea for their own campaign.

@@bonzwah1 They went to the vampires to ask them about some cultists who were seen near their territory, and to have the vamps join their fight against the BBEG. They chose to stay far away from the human livestock, because they didn't want to risk pissing the vamps off. They knew what was going on the moment I gave them a map of the city, and they saw a large, mysterious building labelled: "The Farm." It was a moral dilemma, I suppose, but not one that required the PCs to do anything about it. More than anything, the livestock were there to show the PCs that the vampires weren't really a threat to them, because they already had more food than they could ever need.

The vamps give the necromancers their dead livestock to practice their magic with, and the necromancers supply cheap food. The necromancers have plentiful food because they figured out how to bring plants back from the dead. The actual trading would be done in neutral territory by a designated few, hence the vampire population's lack of "wild" human contact.

One of my best vampire moments came from making the vampire really nice. He was the ruler of a town that was undergoing a massive change and he decided to step up to the plate out of boredom. The first interaction the players had of him was having to ask him for help, he did so with no stings attached. He was still odd, but overall a really good guy to the point where the paladin was having second thoughts. Eventually the vampire became the main questgiver, and would even let the party stay at his keep whenever they were in town. Eventually the vampire started to pull some strings and with the help of another, sow deception into the party (all via rp) and caused the party to turn against each other. A level 17 party almost TPKd to a vampire just by good rp and being crafty. A monster can be more then their stat block.

This gave me an idea for an inn/tavern with a vampire that runs it. They say that anyone who stays there is invigorated. It's one of the best inns/taverns in town. However, stays are limited to one night, but ask anyone and they say it's worth it. Investigation leads to finding a dimly lit inn with beautiful workers with almost ivory skin, a gentle alluring demeanor. A very soothing atmosphere. Upon staying the night they sleep soundly. Waking up completely refreshed. More so than any other night they've slept. Depending on how the investigation goes it may lead to them discovering that the owner is a vampire, as well as the staff. Each night, and why they rest so well is that they sneak in and feed upon them at night. This feeding drains them, relaxing them further into a deeper sleep. Then, the vampire heals them. Curing their wounds so no marks are left. This also reinvigorates them. Thanks for helping fuel my imagination!

Considering that D&D, and other shows/sources, never specify what about "sunlight" actually hurts a vampire - all vamps are immune, in some form, to the sun. UV rays are the real radiation. What Vampires are apparently weak against is the literal light/heat of the Sun. Which isn't very realistic. Imagine this - it's a sunny day. Vampire is under a tree (because shade?!) then a cloud blocks the sun and the vampire proceeds to destroy humanity during that time. Not realistic.

There was this baron over a town, and everyone suspects he's a vampire because he's like 200 years old, until it becomes obvious that he's a vampire. Then you go to meet him, and he's a good-aligned knight who was blessed by the fey with long life, and the real villians are his enemies who are about to attack his manor with a mob... I think? Anyways, have you SEEN the 3.5 stat block for the vampire template? Freakin' STAKKED

I think keeping it a secret with subtle hints is a good idea, I also think it’s a good idea to attach a class to a vampire villain npc. For example, they could be a wealthy wizard who owns a fortress, they could be a scholar at a library, heck they can even be a priest, influencing the temple hierarchy from within. Attaching a class to the villain vampire npc could also boost the stat lock of that character. Great video as always Jacob👍

However, if it's in the desert, they're often referred to as "mummies". 4) Bats wouldn't have high AC, they'd have high reflex saves thanks to their sonar 5) Godspawn vamps would never be a thing. Radiant or necrotic damage at will? Can't detect them with "detect undead"? I'm sure a pally/cleric could still divine their purpose. 6) Even worse - Nosferatu vamp, aside from the fact that stakes can kill them, sound stupid. If you want to put satan in your game, just say so... don't make a stupid subclass for it. 7) For god sakes - learn how thought separation works. They could even be helpful to a town. A vampire with magical or alchemical skills could heal people, so the occasional bloodletting would go unnoticed. "Oh yeah, my potions need a sample of your blood to make them more effective. Give me a couple days at the house and I'll be back to fix that broken leg." Or "A bowl full of your blood is needed to cast this restoration spell, and once it's done you'll be healed." If they're helping sick people then the blood could be taken from close relatives under the guise of needing "healthy blood" for the cures to work.

The easiest way for vampires to get around not going into other people's homes is the reason they're so often nobility in a lot of settings: landlord/fuedal-lord status. If you are the Duke (for instance) and you own all the land, with villeins and serfs given certain rights on land that you own (right to farm (with a share of crops owed), right to live on the property), and give out rights to run taverns and inns *that you own* and to live in homes within the towns walls *that you own* then every serf and villein is a wayside snack, and the whole town is a buffet. The only people whose homes you can't enter are freeholders (and you can just not have any, or force them off their land, or conveniently not protect them from an "unfortunate" monster attack) and people outside of your holdings. To give a modern setting example, Eric in True Blood bought the mortgage to Sookie's family home. Because she was in arrears on the payments, he was able to foreclose the note, and owned her home, which meant he could enter it at will and she couldn't bar him by not giving permission -- because it was his house, not hers. So, in a modern setting, you could have a vampire slumlord, or even landlord who caters to higher-end clients, leasing out property -- and every lease-holder is another potential item on his smorgasbord because he owns the building and they only have right of tenancy. Maybe he applies some sort of alchemical mixture to protect him from the sun that has the side effect of *turning his skin an unnatural shade of orange* . . . .

  • @batmanboy9794
    @batmanboy97944 жыл бұрын

I ran one campaign recently where the sun went down and didnt rise again, and out of anger the masses destroied anything that was sorta religious because they felt the gods had abandoned them. The party began trying to combat a new vampire empire that began and flourished because of the missing sun. The players were paranoid of every NPC they met, using every test they could come up with to figure out if someone was a vampire. And with no religious places there were no priests or holy water. So vampires became much more of a threat.

It was just in some random town they stopped in and they totally ignored the main quest once they noticed all of the townsfolk bar their doors and windows every night. I did all the foreshadowing I could for my level 6 party, warning them how powerful and strong this mysterious monster terrorizing a village was. I gave them multiple outs as they tried to lure it out with bait and whatnot. Finally, it appears and what does the Light Domain Cleric do immediately upon seeing it? Throw a Fireball. Long combat story short, the vampire summoned some wolves and had himself a feast.

behold, the Nachzehrer! if a mortal contracted with this case of vampirism dies (the mortal kind of dying) the vampire will consume its own flesh at night inside its coffin. everynight while the vampire is eating its own flesh, one of the townsfolk will talk (edit: not talk, die, goddammit!). once nothing but the bones of the vampire is left, they will burst out of the ground in the middle of the night, climb the nearest clocktower and ring the bell. all mortals who hear this bell will die on the spot. or they might find a party of heroes investigating the unusual deaths and you could have them try to kill the vampire before it gets to ring the bell. this vampire being part of slavic folklore could very well explain entire villages littered with corpses because of some unkown disease. but seriously, slavic folklore is filled with fucked up cool vampires. imagine someone has been killed by a vampire and, as a result of being bitten by a vampire, will resurrect as a vampire. you put the corpse in a coffin and drive it off to some road intersection. leave the coffin there, in the middle of a four way intersection. somehow, the freshly re-unalived vampire won't know what to do and will dwell there for all eternity... or until your party wants to bury them.

The trick I feel to running vampires successfully is by acting on their cunning, and intelligent nature. A vampire shouldn't be dangerous because they are dangerous, but rather because they have potentially hundreds of years of experience when it comes to planning and political maneuvering. For example a vampire themselves might not be dangerous to the party, but their cleverness may outright kill the party due to well placed traps and hoards of vampire spawn that he has been accumulating overtime. As a result a vampire isn't dangerous because their a vampire, but because of what they can do as a vampire.

I made a jester who’s secretly a vampire. Using her profession to get invited to parties so she can enter people’s homes. Edit:She even had a kidnapped monster that summons thunderstorms to prevent the sun from showing itself.

Personally, my plan is to make the vampire very self-aware of their weaknesses. Stakes: he wears full metal plate under his cloak. Fire: the aforementioned cloak is fireproof. Holy water: the terrain is so hilly there's no puddles to be found. Needing invitation: he's a real-estate tycoon and therefore owns basically all the houses for several miles.

That'd be perfect for Strahd. He's already rich, a former soldier, and Barovia is said to be his domain. Maybe garlic weakness makes him ban all spices so the people can only eat bland, miserable gruel. Makes a bad situation even worse

Full metal plate is not reasonable. I think what you're thinking of is either a) chainmail or b) mithril Mithril would be within his grasp and is much stronger than plate. Also, the terrain being hilly would mean that making "moving water" would be very easy. And how would hills stop there being holy water? A cleric could literally bless the sweat on his brow. People like you should consider their comments more carefully.
