Valve Deckard drives me INSANE

Ғылым және технология

Steam VR 1.27.1 released this week. And as per usual with these "large number" updates, Valve Deckard's VR and AR features tend to leak out.
This one was hell. I hope you enjoy my hell

    I always thought that if VRChat was a native feature of Steam with the workshop+market integration (and getting avatars/items from the actual games you buy on steam) + with SDK for devs to release steam games that can integrate seamlessly (so you could play it like joining a world in vrc) it could be quite revolutionary and far more of a "metarverse" concept than anything Meta Fornite tor Roblox did and it would fit Valve's business model.

    1 thing that I could see making this not happen is that it is against Valves TOS to put any workshop content behind a paywall, many VRchat creators use sites like gumroad to release paid content, under the workshop TOS this would get you banned from the workshop, while you can upload a workshop mod privately which is how VRchat creators currently sell content, your only allowed 1 copy on the workshop, currently VRchat creators sell the unity asset file and tell you to upload privately, this is mostly down to honor system but VRchat will take down content if a creator requests them to, this can't be done on the workshop, Valve will take down duplicate workshop posts, even if by different creators and private, this would kill off people selling VRchat content and private worlds as well since when you upload a private workshop item only YOU can see it, or anyone you mark as a creator but then they get edit permission the workshop in its current state would piss off a large portion of the VRchat community

    I do stuff in Blender, and also got interested in depth sensor tech. In Blender, there's an option to save a depth map when you render a scene, and that is useful for compositing images. Sounds exactly like your mention of a depth buffer. Great for overlays. Camera depth sensors're also relevant to VR. Is why the Kinect is used for body tracking; it has a depth sensor to detect how far from camera a surface is.

  • @World_Theory

    @World_Theory

    10 ай бұрын

    The lack of a depth sensor is also why purely webcam based body tracking needs more than one camera to not be janky. If you want to get some kind of depth data from a single viewpoint, you need a lot more processing, and perhaps some extra help from a specially designed pattern of light (IR light can be used) shown onto the room from a known angle. This technique is called Structured Light. Best depth sensor tech seems to be time-of-flight (ToF) cameras though. Which echo-locate with light pulses instead of sound. They're available on some smartphones.

    Love the SteamVR social features it seems they're working on, like screen-sharing and voice chat to people directly through Steam whether they're in VR or not. More spacial-audio stuff is also very cool. Valve's Index still has the best audio solution of any HMD on the market, even though other things are getting very long in the tooth. Dude, the idea of being able to use Remote Play Together to play a flatscreen couch co-op game but via the internet with your VR avatars sharing the same space and screen in front of you as though you were in the same room together? Holy shit, that's the dream, man, that's the fucking Holy Grail of social VR isn't it? If that's what this is all building up to, that is legitimately *the* killer app. That feature would make Steam and SteamVR *the* place to do VR stuff with your friends. Fuck what everyone else is doing, *nobody* would be able to compete against that. Valve really is gonna make *The Steam Deck of VR Headsets* , if that makes sense. It'll be category defining. Industry shattering. And if they price it as aggressively as the Steam Deck??? Hoooooly shit, they will *own* this market forever. Meta et al. eat your hearts out.

  • @HealyHQ

    @HealyHQ

    10 ай бұрын

    That feature, if it exists, like...that's something even people who don't give a shit about VR games would buy this headset for. Even people who hate the idea of room-scale VR games or moving around a bunch, if all you wanna do is play your typical flatscreen games, but in a super-immersive virtual theater, and with the possibility to invite your friends to share in that same virtual space with you and play together? That alone would sell a bajillion of these headsets. If that's what they're building, they take the gaming crown and will be the kings and queens of gaming forever, Gabe N. be blessed. If that's *not* what they're building, they better start building it. How do you sell VR headsets to people who otherwise think they don't care about VR? THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT, VALVE. YES!!

    I expect the Deckard to be able to accept a standard DP input and be able to project it into a (shared) VR place space. You picked up on this too when you spoke about the separation of concerns between the two hardware chips. I can see Valve wanting to leverage SteamDeck (after a firmware/software update) to be able to be one of those "hardware chips" for a less expensive option for people who already have one. SteamDeck would be put into a slave mode where it just does what the Deckard asks of it. DP has two pins for aux data that can be used for this master-slave communication.

    They're building Steam VR overworld that you can do social stuff in before jumping into vr games. Looks like it might actually let you play 2D games inside it, so you can literally play your whole game library with friends all over the world like you were all siting in the same room, using the game console in split screen mode. Possibly even watch videos you own with them.

    Seeing that mirror function and the fact that they’re fleshing out the SteamVRChat function makes me think maybe they’re going to build out the avatar system from Steam VR Home more and use that in their chat system for how you’d appear in a window alongside your friends in the group chat maybe. Since it’s integrated in the overlay it would be neat to see someone’s headset and controllers represented while they’re in a chat with you in the overlay.

    My first thought with the tiles thing is a sort of overlay for comfort for people like me with vertigo because a lot of games like to leave you floating or moving through space which isn't great for motion-sensitive users like me. I'm getting more used to it but I've noticed almost no developers build that comfort feature in. So having it natively spawn a floor under you would be amazing.

    The other day I saw a video talking about the OpenUSD standard, and it got me thinking; how performant is it? Or to get straight to the point, could it be streamed in real time with enough performance that people running different games could interact with each other's games in VR over the internet, even while locally running different engines and such; could it be a "html" for real-time multiplayer VR, could it be the language for a decentralized platform-independent, uh, "metaverse" ? (I hate how Zucker sullied that word)

    So we will at some point be able to buy a new Headset from valve and it will connect to the deckard instead of a PC? Curious about a date estimation and total price

    You’re hardcore, Brad, and your dedication should be appreciated by all. I partially wonder if Valve is far enough along to announce a Deckard release date just prior to Meta’s September conference (to steal some thunder so to speak). Did they not do that just prior to the Quest and Rift S reveal/release?

    It's really jarring in VRC (I just realized this a few days ago) when you talk louder, you can't be heard by more people. It's really annoying when you can't talk to a group because half of them can't hear you.

    I think what else is interesting, is how Valve have purposefully made it difficult to Data Mine, now. That says to me that they've got things to hide 👍👍

    Since you know so much about Steam VR, could you help me with my Cosmos Elite? I JUST bought it upgrading from an original Vive and I'm getting screen tearing in the headset, with a lot of lag and stuttering. None of this was happening with my Vive OG, just the Cosmos Elite. I have Vsync on in Nvidia settings and all should be working fine. My specs are: Ryzen 7 3700x AM4 32GB DDR4 3200Mt/s RTX 3060 12GB

    By the way, VR chat runs amazing on the steam deck and I was thinking if it’s going to be properly optimized for a brand new headset this is going to be awesome especially because I get almost Smoove 60 FPS and I could barely keep up on the old laptop The performance is actually really good and it’s very well optimize.
