Coming to terms with our bodies no longer being able to keep up with the power of our will is a battle in itself. Particularly where age is the prevailing factor. This is something I have/am getting through. But I can not imagine how those emotions are amplified for a world class fighter. Finding a path to escape from the self destructive emotions of frustration and anger. To find a sense of calmness. For me atleast here are some of the things I did. Seek out and embrace anything that provides a sense of relief to help change your perspective. The things that helped me change perspective was to be open minded. I had to be willing to try and do things I hadnt done before. Listen to people I hadnt listened to before. Talked to people I hadnt talked to before. Do things I hadnt done before. A change of perspective has helped me to discover new things in life that have provided me with senses of purpose and achievement. Hopefully theres a word or two in here to help someone else. I havent tried the painting Devon but it makes sense. It is a way to express emotion and the arts are very emotion connected. A friend has recently suggested to me learning an instrument. I think I will.

I've been grieving with you man, though some would think that a stupid statement. I think I speak for many when I say I live vicariously through your armwrestling journey, it's a big inspiration. Not just the matches, but the wisdom and dumb stuff you post. The victory would have been the single greatest achievement in the history of armwrestling, but more importantly, the most powerful narrative. A real Rocky Balboa fairytale. I've lost a lot, both friends and family, my sporting career, and more so recently, most of what was left. There are many metaphors to pick apart in this Loss. The folly of dreaming too big, what it means to risk it all on one pitch and toss... I could go on. In this game called the Elder Scrolls, if you kill a main character, you get a message - 'With this character's death, the thread of prophecy is severed'. It feels a lot like that right now. But maybe there is a way to spin this thread into a new narrative, whether that is through Brian or Auden or whatever else you set your mind to. I'll be watching to see where this goes and you'll always be my hero. I don't care if that sounds corny.

I feel that we have been robbed of that moment, now that the community has somehow decided that stop didn't count because Levan was only 'warming up' or playing around. From what I saw, it was like a woman lifting a car to save a child. I thought it was a superhuman effort and it took all that he had. That's how I'm going to remember it.

@@Tasmanaut i think that’s the right way to remember it. I don’t buy that he was warming up. Right before he transitioned to a press, levan tried to surge sideways and was unable to make progress without compromising his wrist. I wish i could go back in time and tell devon to focus on the war not the battle, and give up if he is in too disadvantageous a position (ie levan pressing when devon didnt expect it), vs expend all his energy. Wonder how rounds 2-4 wound’ve looked if he didnt redline to stop the press

Devon, As a guy turning 49 this year as well I think my take away from this is that all humans can only ride the huge waves for so long. I’ve never in my life rode the waves that you’ve been on year after year but I know it takes a toll. With years of wisdom gained it’s human nature to want to, and in most cases need to, head for calmer waters. A person knows too much and has learned too much compared to their younger years. I think you need to narrow your focus and ride the small waves that life will keep bringing you. Your legacy in life has already been cemented. Best wishes going forward and I really appreciated this video.

Man. I get this. I became an atheist at 10. Long story. My dad died, it was traumatic... 17 years later, I met my wife. She is my hero. Not long after that, humans decoded DNA. I had a strange feeling. I think I might be predestined. If I have a fate, maybe we all do. If predestiny is real, fate must have an author. That would be what most people call god. In spite of knowing this, I have yet to figure out which religion is the best one. Seems that is a very deep question. Devon, you are still a hero, even in defeat. You survived, so you can go on to do more great things. Like painting! Heck, I was entertained. Seriously tho, I am very excited to see whatever you do. I wish you good physical and mental health. Be well, brother. Edit: P.S. I hate getting old. It is awful. My strength, my strength, where did it go? Oh how I miss my youthful power.

The word "valkyrie" comes from Norse mythology and refers to female deities who served the god Odin. Valkyries decided who would fall in battle and who would survive. The fallen warriors, whom they considered the bravest, were brought to Valhalla, Odin's hall, where they prepared for the final battle at Ragnarök. The word "valkyrie" is also used in modern culture, often in literature, movies and games, where it symbolizes fighting, courage and protection.

FANTASTIC Devon! Love you for all the armwrestling but REALLY love you for all this deep, highly original independent, beautiful free flow of wisdom that seems to spring forth from you so readily like a Shaman Druid! BTW I've been working as an Art teacher for nearly 30 years and LOVE your Art too, those satirical bedtime stories you drew about opponents had that same characteristic refreshing originality of yours. I've always been particularly fascinated by Cave Art and the crystalline purity of those human minds behind them. Art and Religion are closely bound up together. Just on another note I was brought up a Catholic and went to Catholic schools but I'd be hard pressed to explain to you what a Catholic is. I think its good to be nice and loose within any framework. Stride boldly on!

I’m happy you made this video. I could tell based on your other videos that you were somewhat religious or at least curious and appreciative of religion. Don’t be afraid to share your own beliefs or giving light to the beliefs of others. Many people will love you even more because of this. Many people, possibly even friends, will hate you because of this. Don’t listen to them and find your path, which you seem to be doing very well. Also, the painting is actually really good. In art, if the piece fulfills the artist’s purpose, then it is a good piece. Yours does that while showing a creative layout and use of color and space.

I’m mildly triggered in a good way. Ty for being a voice and a face that teaches us how to go back and make things right in our hearts. So much more than an Armwrestler. ❤

I am an atheist also and I believe the answers to life come from within each one of us and will be different for each person. When we make the answers external and try to be all the same answer for everyone that is where conflict occurs because that is an impossibility.....Look inside yourself, do not look to others for your own answers, that's a cop out and too easy. It is much more difficult to come to your own place of comfort and well being in life.

Ahhh the joys of a mid-life crisis @43 I've started mine. Your whole life going from the bottom of the hill rising to the top. Then once you get to the top there is a hurdle you have to jump over to enter your second phase of life. You have influenced so many people we owe you the "Thank you" and training Brian Shaw will influence so many more, so thank you!
