The discipline with the throttle here is the incredible. Notch three out the platform, up to four as they enter the tunnel, five comes later. This driver knew their train well.

It is a sign of the times for us "older" diesel enthusiasts that I am listening to this for the first time and grinning like a cheshire cat. Having disliked HSTs all my adult life for replacing Peaks and Duffs etc I can't believe that the sound in this amazing clip has made me smile so much. What I particularly like is that you think it is at full power as it opens up on entering the tunnel, but then he REALLY opens it up half way through the tunnel. Wow. Thanks for posting :-)

In that case, head to the Severn Valley Railway on the 16th - 18th May where the 125 Group is planning to bring the Valenta 41001 :-)!

Opinions differ ofcourse, but in my opinion: The Valenta is the best sounding vehicle, ever. Perhaps the best sound in general ever, with the exception of music.

I was born 1999 so i got to hear these things in all their ear deafening glory, I remember taking a Midland Mainline one from Darlington to Newquay and then a GNER one back and let me tell you, when the back car came past as it left for scotland, the scream from the engines nearly made me go deaf it was that loud and awesome!

Used to hear these every day in Leeds station whilst I was waiting to catch the local train home. I used to stand next to Platform 6 so i could listen. Probably why I'm half deaf now😂

I love the sound of this engine. Sadly we never had these where I grew up in Kent and by the time I moved to a new part of the uk in early the 2000s they were at the end of their lifetime.

The line speed limit increases in the tunnel from about 20 mph to somewhere nearer 50. Once clear of the second tunnel it goes up again.

East midland's HSTs still have the scream at full power. VP185s are quieter but still sound good.

Memory of a leaving an Edinburgh to London train at York. Going south out of York there’s no tight curves to negotiate and he put it on full power without any let up. The scream echoing around the cavernous roof and the trailing power car screaming as well. Painful but delightful.

I always remember getting a Grand Central set back to York From Kings X absolutely thrashing it through them tunnels, flying past everything in its site back to York non-stop, goosebumps on the back of my neck!

It’s quite easy not to drop the camera if you use a camcorder, most of them have a strap on the right hand side you can put on your right hand, whilst you hold the flip out screen with your left hand for steadier footage

Its now 2024. Do you suffer tinnitus or hearing issues like a lot of valenta bashers now say they do. I bashed VP185s and i have tinnitus.
