Valedictorian Slams Teachers and Staff in Scathing Graduation Speech | NowThis

This Valedictorian called out her high school's staff for their lack of support and setting bad examples in this scathing grad speech.

In US news, high school graduate Nataly Buhr shocked the audience and the world with her San Ysidro High School valedictorian speech. The headlines will surely read 'Valedictorian shocks world with brutally honest speech,' because in this grad speech she called out teachers and school staff for being negligent and accused one faculty of being a drunk teacher. Buhr hoped students would find her graduation speech inspirational. A rep from Sweetwater Union High School District called the speech 'unfortunate.' Buhr is evidently not the teachers pet.

Students should check into scholarships themselves,in this day and age of the internet. It’s not hard.I did myself, not relying on on anyone else. Not excusing the administration. But when you become an adult in the REAL World are you constantly going to rely on other people for everything.GROW UP!But it does wonder how legitimate her being a Valedictorian is.

@@gregoryadkins2213 The way she spoke about it, the school had made it known that they were aware of scholarships. Obviously students should ALSO be looking themselves (as did I), but if the school has a list of them, or perhaps are privy to programs not readily publicized and don't care enough to respond to students' requests, that's a huge problem. When you're that age, the whole transition to college thing is terrifying. They are not quite in the real world yet and need help.

Gregory Adkins a lot of the good scholarships are not easy to find on the internet. What I mean by that is the scholarships that are in the administration (for my school they had a bunch of forms of each one for anyone to apply to), they weren’t easy to find/wouldn’t show up with a simple search and these were some big (and really specific to program) scholarships

Find a better argument to make, because the United States has the best colleges/universities in the world. "Challenging schools" mean that the average SAT and ACT score is 1570 and 36 respectively, with an acceptance rate of 4% at best... Like MIT, Duke, or Stanford. Yes, I have hired plenty of people. I was the hiring/regional manager at LOVES for a few years before I decided to go back to school for nuclear engineering. People like the girl in the video make it much farther in life than people like yourself, who don't seem have the gall to stand up for themselves. You can call her whatever you want! Snowflake, crybaby, whatever. I'm sure if you actually said any of this to her face, she'd laugh you out of town. Lastly, I'm going to assume that you're an alcoholic yourself...since you seem so keen on defending them and their illness. If not, then I recommend you check your priorities. I for one pay taxes to send my children to school so that they can LEARN. If anything is impeding them of learning(like, oh, I don't know...a drunk teacher?) then it needs to be addressed. P.S. Scholarships are made purposely difficult to come across in the United States, since you can't just apply from anywhere you want. Most are regional, and hyper-specific. All schools are required by law to assist students in finding them, so her argument is valid regardless of your personal feelings.

We had a teachers assistant at my high school who was pretty cool. She was always different but I've realized in my time since high school how different this woman really was. She was older than most of the teachers probably late 40s early 50s and I remember her asking this one kid how things are at his job. This guy was not the best student and definitely struggled but he managed to graduate. While basically every other high school teacher saw working in high school as a waste of time, this teacher knew that that guy was gonna be working a job like that forever and that his success there while he was in high school was gonna help him move up within the company or a similar company and I'm pretty sure he still is doing something similar to this day. We also asked her one Friday night if she had any plans and she responded with "working my other job". It's pretty cool that she took the time to understand and talk with students like that (and I wasn't much different) where as the rest of the staff it was almost like we didn't exist. Most teachers seem to only really care about their smart kids that are gonna go to a big expensive college or whatever because that's who makes them look good. Rarely is there support for the underprivileged kids (usually males) who are lucky to still be in school because once they graduate they're gonna be into the workforce and none of that will matter to them.

I’ve seen this several times now. Glad this went viral, well deserved. Her speech was sarcastic, eloquent, fiery, bold and just overall beautiful. I’ve always imagined giving a speech like this at my university commencement where there were a lot of crazy liberal “professors” who gave me a hard time. I’ve got my Bachelor’s now, no regrets. I can tell this speech probably wasn’t authorized by the school but sometimes you might have to be sneaky to get the truth out. It must be a great feeling, accomplishing something so big while speaking out against those who wronged you and wanted you to fail. There’s no greater sense of retribution. Even if it doesn’t lead to change at your institution, at least you’ve had your voice heard. Good job.

There are real problems in school districts with teachers and staff having addiction problems. This is one step in helping the system but there shouldn't be a bunch of finger pointing after this. Teachers and staff are generally decent people that have stressful lives. For God's sake they have to deal with kids being failed by the system which is seemingly neat impossible to change. Crabs blaming crabs when everyone is trying to get out of the pot. Well maybe not EVERYONE, but a lot.

In NZ we have what we call " headstudent ". I happened to be the headstudent for 2022 and I planned my speech out to be just like this touching base on the harsh reality students face. Students who really try have absolutely zero support yet when are to give a speech at the end of the year they are expected to say the most beautiful things. I was denied my speech of 'rebellion' and I just wish I had actually given out the words that I had been waiting to say for so long. I say good on her because she wasn't doing wrong to the teachers when they should've thought twice before letting their students down( It is their job to).

It would have made them look bad if they shut of her mic or pulled her off stage. It would basically show that they are guilty and trying to cover up - not to mention the social taboo of "silencing a child", and the media fallout would have been a hundred times worse. The only thing they COULD do was stand there and wait for it to end and do damage control afterwards. Honestly, it was a brilliant move by the student because they would have brushed ot under the rug if she "aired her grievances" on a letter or in the privacy of their offices because they protect each other and their jobs so nothing would have been done. Epically if she had waited until after the graduation - they would say shes no longer a student and dismiss her. So doing it this way forces them to hear her and address the issues because now the media and everyone else knows and are watching their response.

@@jansonshrock2859 Good. I would never want to graduate if it meant perpetuating the toxic environment and just pass the buck for future generations to suffer. I would remember back at this proudly, because we would've overcome the atrocities the school allowed. Students and their parents deserved better and to act as if they were given anything but a lesser education, might as well have dropped out and gone to an adult school instead. Only weak minded people with little chance of success would graduate with their heads hung low and allow their failed mentors to overshadow them.

I completely understand why she did this. Kids who excel in academics are not heard. The focus tends to be on the athletic department and anything that brings in money. When I was in high school, I had a teacher who got drunk every morning during class and didn’t bother to teach us anything, and he was a coach. My best friend was the salutatorian of our class, and I ended up writing her graduation speech. It ended up being censored by the administration, but some of it was allowed. It criticized the school because they glorified the sports (specifically football) because of the money it brought in) and severely neglected the academics and the students who they depended on to keep the doors open (accreditation and test scores). They always acted so proud at graduation when the students got scholarships and grants for academics, but they ignored them until they needed to use them for something. As a former teacher, I am really proud of this young woman for speaking out and taking a stand. She seems to have an understanding that change is slow in a larger scale like this, but that it shouldn’t stop her from making the effort. I certainly hope that she will realize that her experience was not unique, unfortunately. But I hope that she will continue to fight the good fight as she continues to grow and learn. I wish her all good things as she continues her education. I’m sure her parents are very proud of her.

That was my least liked teacher. The one who had nothing for the average, or the struggling, but instead elected to pour all their attention into the gifted students as if they were the ones that needed the help learning to be a better student. As though some future famous author was going to vindicate all the years they committed to the teaching profession with some fold out in a book sleeve, "About the author," where they thank the English teacher that inspired them back in highschool. I find that, among Christian's, this is also the same person to whom the "going *to* church," will never be as important to them as the "being seen *at* church," is.

My staff at my shool was terrible!! They always made appointments that never ended up being fulfilled and I genuinely feel like my school district let so many students who needed actual help slip through the cracks. I skipped classes everyday because I was being bullied and would cry in the staircase almost every day but all I got were scathing phone calls to home rather than giving me the help I asked for several times. my skipping made me behind in my classes and so instead of taking the classes I needed they put a bunch of electives instead of my core classes. Luckily I got out of there my senior year and I don't miss it at all but I never made good high school memories and that's what I regret most
