Vacuum Systems the ULTIMATE GUIDE

I’ve been asked many times to put together a review video comparing the four major vacuum systems on the market today. These would be the Riptide, The Bottom Feeder, Power Vac, and the Hammer-Head Vacuum. Each one of these has some pros and cons and each one is a little different. Overall you really can’t make a wrong choice between the four. Let me highlight some features for you about each system in no particular order.
Chapter Marks:

Riptide:
This is probably the Tesla of vacuum systems. Riptide is always innovating. They basically only kept their vacuum head. And the vacuum head comes with a 10- year warranty because it is that durable.
The High Torque Motor (uses rare earth magnets) making it the most powerful vacuum on the market. The cord has a new protective external layer and comes in 40 ft or 60 ft lengths. The cart is now e-coated before powder coating
This makes the finish of our components much more durable. Extremely high-quality integrated steering knuckle -Integrated Stainless Steel Steering Knuckle. This allows you to hook any pole directly up to the Riptide vacuum without the need for any adaptors while being effortless to maneuver in the water. The SL model Riptides now include a Diagnostic/Tool Kit with a battery load tester, the load tester is essential for quickly determining battery condition.
Watch my Riptide review video here: • Riptide SL the Ultimat...
Power Vac:
The Power Vac wins in the maneuverability department hands down. Imagine pushing an office swivel chair around the pool bottom and you get the idea. Ideal for vinyl pools because of the safe wheels and vacuum head clearance and great for steps and spas. It takes some getting used to for sure but it works great and is actually was the first vacuum system on the market back in 1995.
The Vacuum head is unique in itself with the wide-body 20 inches by 11-inch cleaning path allowing you to pick up large debris through the 6” diameter throat. It has 35 lbs. of thrust and comes with the choice of a 40 ft or 60 ft cord. The cart is also one the most refined of the big three and it is extremely well made. You can also make the Power Vac portable and easily plug it into their battery case (sold separately).
Power Vac Review: • Power Vac Large Servic...
Hammer-Head:
The Hammer-Head has been around almost as long as the Power Vac. The vac head is shaped differently but it has the same power as the Power Vac. You can get the standard 21” vacuum head or the larger 30” vacuum head. For most service techs the 21” vacuum head will work fine. You can also get the cord in 40 ft or 60 ft length and the cart is probably the least refined of the big three.
NON-MARKING, BEARINGLESS, CAST URETHANE HEAD WHEELS
STAINLESS POLE SWIVEL MOUNT
FEATURING THE PATENTED SMART SWITCH™ (The new HH1062 Smart Switch comes standard on all Hammer-Head pool cleaning units. SMART SWITCH™ features include a motor-saving overload sensor, two speeds, and an automatic shutoff when the motor is out of the water for more than a minute).
Bottom Feeder:
Fast. Light. Powerful.
Finish vacuuming a pool faster and easier with The Bottom Feeder Professional-Grade Battery-Powered Swimming Pool Vacuum. This cordless portable pool vac is so lightweight and easy to use, you can carry everything in one hand in only one trip from the truck to every pool on your route. With no hoses, long cords or carts, simply connect the 2.5-Hr. rechargeable lithium-ion battery and you are good to go. Weighing in at only 12 lbs., this compact and lightweight battery-powered pool vacuum is the lightest commercial-duty swimming pool vacuum system available.
The 18 lbs. thrust motor makes it effective at picking up leaves, twigs, small stones, and coins along with the finer debris. So there really is plenty of power.

I like the way you described the Advantage Port-a-Vac as a complete equipment pad on a dolly because, that is why it is unique. When it comes to picking up sand and silt, a bag just does not get to the fine micron level of a cartridge filter. Also, you can run the system while waiting to make repairs to the main system. Sometimes with green pools you want to vacuum to waste, which a Port-a-vac handles very well. Many pool pros have multiple systems available for various uses. Another great video!

Of all of the examples, the bottom feeder did the best job of accelerating the smaller particles to the throat opening. It seems the "weir door" style flaps contribute to that efficiency. One of these companies needs to consider DIY and homeowners in their price range though. Excellent videos! Thank you for the informational videos.

I was an Power Vac PV2100 user for several years. Loved it! It had three features that I liked. One, the vacuum was not "permanently" attached to the power supply. It had a plug in to a connector on the battery. It was very easy to coil the cord after use. Second, the top of the vac had a plastic flap that would automatically close when the vac was unplugged, so there was no way for debris to leave the bag. And third, it used caster type wheels that rotated 360 degrees making it very easy to maneuver. However, the Power Vac has two problems. One, the motor has a major design flaw (in my opinion). The motor housing is in the shape of a capsule. The housing comes in three pieces, with each piece separated by a very thin o-ring. What happens with all o-rings guys? They deteriorate and fail. So eventually your motor fills with WATER. Nice! The second problem is that parts availability is non-existent. You can't find any parts for this vac anywhere. A new motor was about $300.00, but no one has them and Power Vac only uses distributors so you can't buy them factory direct.

A cheaper but not quite as good solution is adapting a standard leaf eater to the existing Polaris hose. It does work pretty well. I've been doing that for years, as I have trouble justifying the cost and effort of dealing with these type systems, for what my pools involve. If my pools were much more trouble, I'd definitely spring for one of these cleaners.

Great video! I have the riptide and its built like a tank!!! It will literally last for ever. But it is VERY heavy. I also have the bottom feeder and loved it until it died only a couple of months after warranty was up. By far my favorite vacuum but im disapointed with the quality. I also had the hammerhead and I loved it but I sold it right before my bottom feeder died. As far as the bags I agree, the riptide bags last a lot longer and never come off the vac head.I also like the hammerhead oem bags. . I guess ill try the power vac 🤔

Hammerheads will stop instantly from gumballs they will wedge between the body of the vac and the prop. Also if the leaves are the right softness and size and it run the vac into a pile they can wrap around the blade throwing it off balance. We ran power inverters instead of 12 volt batteries so I hung a remote shut off around my neck for those instances where I needed to shut it off quickly or to empty the bag.

Nice video. Couple things: 1. The way you have that hammerhead cable wrapped around the posts is bad. It will eventually break the cable inside the insulation and you will have to buy a new motor - unless hammerhead has a way of replacing just the cable, but it is wired directly to the motor. Cable needs to be neatly spooled with no twists. 2. You have the hammerhead racked backwards. It’s better to have the male (where the pole slots into) facing the front of the cart. That way, all you need to do is undo the bungie and insert the pole into the head while it is still sitting on the cart. 3. Did you talk about lifepo4 batteries? Compared to deep cycle AGM, Gel, and SLA…they are half the size, 1/4 of the weight, capable of being charged at their capacity amps (20 amps for a 20ah capacity battery for example and safer. Their capacity is not as great, but considering the other benefits, it’s the better choice. I no longer use a cart. We bought the remora by hammerhead. I bought a 50ah lifepo4 battery and placed it in a backpack. I removed the power switch and plug from the remora and integrated it onto the outside of my backpack. So now, all I do is wear my backpack and carry stand-alone hammerhead vacuum head with the cable. It plugs into my backpack, i hit the switch on the backpack, and wear it as i walk around the pool cleaning it, untethered to a cart. Battery lasts me all day at full power and i haven’t seen it drop below 50% yet.
