Almost unknown in the US, Brown was part of the backing band for Eddie Cochran's UK appearances in the late 1950's. From Cochran, Brown directly and later legions of UK guitarists learned the trick of moving string gauges around to better facilitate string bending. Brown, along with Hank Marvin defined pre-Beatles UK guitar playing and was equally at home in the traditional UK show business methods of presentation as well straight out Rock and Roll. Brown was a most advanced player compared to most other early UK guitarists and had he made inroads on the US market would have been able to hold his own instrumentally with American acts of the time. Brown was an influence on a young George Harrison with Harrison sneaking playing time on Brown's Gibson ES 335 backstage on early 1960's package shows featuring The Beatles and Brown. The Beatles would perform Brown's hit "A Picture Of You" with George on vocals in their live shows, also including it on one of their earliest BBC Radio appearances. Years later, Harrison would appear on UK TV promoting Day Tripper using an ES 335 much like Brown's, Brown's influence still strong even in 1966 . Brown performed as a solo on The Concert For George playing ukelele with few dry eyes in the house in tribute to his friend George. Brown continues to amaze and delight audiences over 60 years since his earliest performances in the 1950's.
