V8 Squarebody Swap in a Weekend!! Out with the old V6 and in with a new Small Block! Power Upgrades!
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Casper, our 1986 Chevrolet C10 Shortbed squarebody, is having some issues with his 4.3L V6 as it's just plain worn out. So it's time to upgrade for a Goodwrench 350 engine that we've had kicking around the shop for a couple years. Follow along as we show you how we converted our original 6 cylinder truck to an 8 cylinder. This one currently isn't for sale. As always, thanks for watching!

I like the real life restores. I cant afford all new everything to do perfect rebuilt. So this is my kind of revival. Remember all cars are running on used parts.

Remember “OK Used Cars”? They ain’t great, they aren’t bad, hell they probably aren’t even good, but they’re OK
I love your attitude about getting stuff running and drivable. That's why so many viable cars and trucks are sitting in peoples back yards doing nothing instead of being driven. Everybody thinks they have to do a 100 point concourse restoration.
Pheasants are gonna be sittin' tight.
1:41 Like @Sleeperdude always says ‘just cause she smoke don’t mean she broke!’
If it was a Toyota, I'd say "Bugger!". Well, the V8 runs at least, eh? You made quick work on that swap, mate. Amazing what you can do with stuff you got lying about the shop too. Just as a warning, I've had several ignition modules that died intermittently. Engine would get warm and they'd conk out for a couple of minutes and then fire up like there was never an issue - usually about the time it took me to lift the bonnet after cranking it a couple of times. I'd check for spark, the old cow would fire up on as many as she could, I'd put the plug wire I was testing with back on - thinking the problem wasn't spark - get a few miles further down the road and it would repeat the problem. Took me a few times of it doing this to find the problem. Once it was a loose connection on the coil and the others it was the module itself overheating and dying. From that perspective, you cannot beat points and a condenser, but those buggers have their issues as well. I'd still rather have an electronic ignition in the winter though, for sure. I'll never forget the time the first one started dying - I was in 3rd going down a hill and the rev counter kept going to zero when the module quit and bouncing back up when it came right again. Every time it came back to life there was an almighty BANG from the rear of the car as the unburnt gases in the pipe suddenly ignited. The bloke following me reckoned one of the belches of flame was at least 3ft long! All I know was that it really lit up the back of the car when it happened at night - certainly enough to see the looks of surprise on the faces of the people in the car behind me! After checking all the wiring connections to the ignition module, if you got a spare module in your stash, that would be the first thing I'd change. One thought - if the switched power going to the module - if it comes directly from your ignition switch, you might want to check that too. However, my money is on the module being temperamental. As to the gauge cluster being dead, the power gets fed through the gauge first and then it grounds out at the senders to various degrees, which in turn moves the needles. If there is a common power to the fuel, oil and temp gauge - either in the back of the cluster or through a fuse or relay - then that's where your problem lies. Otherwise I can't see how all three gauges can read nothing unless all three senders are bad.....so its more likely there is a common power fault. Check fuse, then relay (if it has one) and then power wire. Hopefully it just a dirty connection. All the best - and please let us know how you get on. Cheers!
LOL Mortske what a Hack! Just kidding dude, your content is on point. Duff adds 2 points.

Hey, '80's shortbed square-body love! Keep it up Mortske. Had to laugh, because I spent almost a year looking for a replacement core support for my '83 D-150...and, down the rabbit hole I went. Found a clean one 2,000 miles away. Now the entire front end is blown apart.

Boy, that was a budget build. Good thing you've collected quite a junkyard there to get parts from . I'm like you, I'm not a fan of cleaning/painting parts that no one ever sees. If they do, then you must have run over them and they aren't going to be able to tell anyone. Good thing you have Bernie to bring your Chevys back home..

I really enjoy the way you do the work. I think it’s more realistic and comparable to what actually happens in life. The scenario where engine goes bad driving home from work on Friday and you have until Monday morning to do a swap because you can’t miss work. Missing a day of work means some bill doesn’t get paid on time.

I had an 86 with a blown up 4.3 and a 4speed, just a plain-jane no a/c vinyl seat. I put in a 350, which was a pretty easy swap, made it a good working pickup. I was able to use a lot of the v6 stuff as you did. We got a bit of snow in McCook as well. I keep telling myself it is one day closer to spring!

I would agree that not doing the power-washing shouldn't be considered a "hack" move. But, I am also one that despises working in a dirty and grimy environment. I would rather work on something that is a little less filthy and greasy.
This day and age budget build is a good thing mortskee

I always thought the 4.3 motors never got the recognition they deserved. I found them cheap and dependable for the money. My 2nd gen Blazer had the fuel injected 4.3 and always ran very nicely. Always had great responsiveness. I never had any power train issues at all in that 4 by 4 SUV which I drove over ten years. I thought it tempting to change out the center point injection system to a multi port, with the adaptation of a neat Delco replacement kit. Then I thought, if it ain't broke,....... don't fix it!

Great video, great dog! Love the truck. I am biased though, cuz I am from a gm town
I never understand all these “complaints” from the opinionated. It’s your truck. It’s yours to do as you wish. Keep shooting videos your way Mort-oh and Duff.
I would do always a few things differently but than again I don't own anything in this video. But regardless it's always fun to watch every video. They all have some valuable knowledge. V6 where never that foolproof to begin with. Seen many of these engines being scrapped for various reasons. No shame in not washing the TH400 cause you don't even know if its any good in the long run.
A fella who wrenches on wrecks, needs to have good friends. Can't go wrong on a short bed Chevy. always entertaining to watch someone else fixin on them instead of me. Be well, all is right in my world. thanks for sharing.
I appreciate that you do "budget friendly." I don't have a bunch of money to not use what I have around. Real life stuff on your channel & it ROCKS!

I don't miss Northern Winters . Just got out of my pool here in Florida . I do miss the big deer hunting the most . Deer here are tiny . Great work Mortske . I need a truck like this but being broke tells me I can't have one .

Thanks for another Mortske Monday!
that 63 c10 big back window with the 6 banger needs either the high po 283 out of the hot rod or the 327 out of the sprint car,.and a 4 speed trans, and a posi rear end.THINK ABOUT IT! love to see that build.

I’m sure Mortske is gonna say something else that I completely agree with in this video. But I’m so freaking happy he is trying to appeal to us poor folks. And creating content that’s actually realistic to the common blue collar guy.
One of your best videos. Nice and to the point. Shorts are better than 3 hours talking. Very nice.
I like the fact that you used the correct motor mounts, I had a manifold problem on the exhaust hitting the valve covers. I stuck an LT1 in a 58 Delray. I had to grind the little lumps off the manifolds to have a little space between the valve covers and exhaust manifolds. Doing it right never makes you a hack.
Heavy metal weather potato gets me everytime!!!
I understand the pain we used to swap motors in a couple hours but that was 40 years ago. I would need a couple days at least today.
Don't change sh@t Morske not everyone can dump 20g into a project to complete it in a month, you do you and keep on posting we will still watch brother

WhooHoo! Just the greatest!
It's good to see someone actually doing work. I had to take a break from the Oklahoma interior decorator 😂
I did a V8 swap on an '87 long bed 4 speed that had the same issues with the 4.3L. I slid the V6 frame mounts ahead and welded the mounts and the bottom part of the mounts to the cradle. The 350 sat a lil' crooked, but it worked fineish
