V5A51 Teardown Highlights

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, we look at the V5A51, this is my first one that I tore down. It's a RWD transmission and is very similar to the FWD transmission F5A51. This is a highlight video on this transmission. Thanks for watching

Gary, hope all is well. Thanks for posting about these transmissions. They seem not to be that popular here in the US (at least on youtube). I have same exact model. Would there be a "classic sign" appointed to clutch groups when having a very hard 2-3 shift (both in manual and auto)? I personally rebuilt the valve body and got better, but the shift is still too abrupt.

Hi, So i have a, and we call them Mitsubishi Pajero Gen 2. So i guess it would be the 97 Mitsubishi Montero gen 2 3.5 v6 LWB Auto OD FWD. I have the super select as they are all known. Now when i start my Pajero, it has a deepish whining noise that you can hear clearly at the bell housing area. It sounds like a power steering pump whine but constant. It does not change noise when you select R or D gets little louder as the cars revs pick up and down. The noise stays in sync with the engine speed. It has sound like this after owning it for a Year and a half, a little louder, i also have a vibration. I rebuild the engine, and after that the cars vibration was from 80KPH to 149KPH, about 50MPH to 90PMH and then it goes away. After i replace the rear differential LSD oil with OEM oil the vibration is only from80MPH to 86MPH. Some one said my rear diff bearings need replacement. The vibration when i purchased the car was only at 80MPH. After engine rebuild it started vibrating so badly. Not the engine causing the vibration though. I have replaced the Transmission filter and oil during engine rebuild in lockdown March 2020 with OEM parts from Mercedes Dealers as they are the dealers for Mitsubishi in South Africa. I also replaced the oil pump oil seal in front of the transmission. Does the torque convertor only go in one way that it is balanced or is it any way as long as the guides slide into the pump. Expensive This Mitsubishi parts. I will email you a video clip of the noise. Later today. Any ideas. Thanks for the great help last time with the Viano auto tear down and advice. Although it has jerking now when cold and changing from second to third or 1 to 2 after like a years driving

I worked for Mitsubishi for 17 years and went inside of every transmission they built from about 98 to 2017 but never had to open one of those up. They were some extremely good transmissions and of course it helps that the V6 engine didn't have a lot of power either. They often got driven around in 4 lo due to the transfer case switch issue. Wonder if that's why this one has damage? Thanks for sharing!

Hey Gary, love the channel :). I have a Mitsubishi Galant VR4 (called Legnum VR4 in Japan), it is a V6 twin turbo 280bhp 4wheel drive (all time). The automatic triptronic gearbox it uses is the W5A51 5speed. The W5A51 generally in this car has an issue with the wave spring breaking and destroying the internals. Some boxes are OWC One Way Clutch. Would one way clutch be a better box?. Can you suggest any upgrades or improvements that could be done to help the box handle the power. Also could anything be done to the torque converter to help handle the power?. I have gone through 3 auto gearboxes in 16 years. I am in the UK and it is more cost effective to find a second hand full unit and just change the whole box. I am running about 350bhp. The four wheel drive system is the same as the Mitsubishi Evo, with the centre diff and the ayc active yaw control rear diff. Any advice on any upgrades from other Mitsubishi boxes or kits etc would be much appreciated. Keep up the good work, cheers from Scotland, Louis

That is what happens to the F5A51 Transmission front wheel drive transmission, they make a real thick wave spring to fi that problem, The wave spring would break and a piece would work it's way into the pump and break the gears

I have for a long time wanted to learn how a auto trans works and how to repair them. I have stripped and repaired manual gearboxes but never an automatic. This one is from my own car which lost all transmission fluid and continued to be driven for a while. I topped up the trans fluid and have 1st and reverse with no problems then changes to 2nd and the trans slips. If I rev the engine, a clutch grabs and drives but the engine is reving far too high. I reduce the revs and the clutch slips. No bad noises coming from the transmission at all. I’m hoping the problem is in a couple of clutch packs. Prior to this the transmission was well taken care of. It’s a 4x4 Montero you call in in the US. I’m in Australia.
