CB, If you haven't read _1984,_ please do so to see how much this film owes to it. It was published in 1949 and less than a year later, the author, George Orwell / Eric Blair, died at 46 of complications of lung infection, after a several-month hospital stay. In the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, his novel was required reading at school here in the U.S. It remains very well-known in the UK, and i assume is still required in grade school over there, despite its failure to keep both sides of a bipolar world from sliding into the darkness and insanity it foretold. ✌🏼

As far as predictions go it is like a mirror in that it also reverses the image. The tyrants are nationalists whose motto is "unity is a strength" instead of the actuality of globalists tyrants whose mottos "diversity" is a strength. They even had a "message of hate" in the movie way before the Orwellian hate speech laws were brought into censor dissidents. It is remarkable how many parallels there are if we simply swap out the fictitious right wing dictatorship for the real left wing globalist dictatorship we are under.

I was uncertain whether CB used this phrasing correctly but it seemed she did. She said “on the nose” meaning on point, precise. But I thought of the term “too on the nose” meaning a lack of subtlety. What made it somewhat confusing in my mind is imho the movie can possibly have that criticism levelled at it in certain moments as the adaption from its source material removed a degree of nuance for cliche. Still a fantastic story and the film makes it reach a much larger audience.

@@sanctimoniouslocke3941 I'd disagree. In Watchmen superheroes were a key part of the plot. It was about the humanity and inherent failings thereof that lie beneath their costumes but it was very much a superhero movie in a world where they became the norm. V is the only one like him in the setting and his powers are subtle. The plot has nothing to do with powers, it's a story of the corruption of political power and people's need to guard and fight for their freedom.

@@platinumspider7859 I find it similar in that, in Watchmen, the superpowers are incidental. With the exception of... the blue guy, at least. The alienation they felt towards others always seemed to come from things other than being superpowered. Being a woman in a patriarchal society. Being veterans with untreated PTSD. Being vigilantes living in a fascistic state. Their superpowers were present in the story, but the story wasn't *about* the superpowers.

I swear, as amazing as the alliteration-ridden speech is, I will never be able to recite it, even with practice. Hugo Weaving is incredible at what he does. "Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. [carves 'V' into the poster on the wall] The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V."

It's not meant to be a chekov gun thing that there is a literal pay off to the links but the implication is the likeness of spirit certain characters share leads them to do similar things, like ook eggs the same way... Just brilliant script, acting and cinematography.

One of my favorite films of all time. You mentioned parallels with another Facebook mine, Beauty and the Beast, but even more similar is it to yet another beloved classic, The Phantom of the Opera. V and Erik have a good amount in common. V is so charismatic and endearing, Hugo Weaving did such an excellent job making us fall for a character whose face you never even catch a glimpse of. The graphic novel is good but very different from the film (just a couple right off the bat, V has a hat that makes him look like a pilgrim, Evey is blonde and Gordon Dietrich isn't gay, he and Evey actually sleep together while she's hiding out at his place) and I agree with/prefer the differences in the film version. That domino sequence is sexy though, innit? 😅 So glad you enjoyed it, your reactions are always such a joy for me to watch ❤

Beyond the primary characters I also really liked Stephen Rea's performance as Eric Finch (the primary investigator). His performance reminded me of his portrayal of Detective Viktor Burakov in a film, Citizen X (1995), about the serial killer Andrei Chikatilo.

So mosf people are familiar with the "Remember, remember the 5th of November..." poem. about the gunpowder plot.

Watching this time, I noticed after the first building was destroyed, the Chancellor demands Tchaikovsky's "War of 1812" overture is added to the black list saying "I never want to hear that music again." And he gets his wish cause he's shot dead an hour before the overture was played again as the British Parliament blows up !!! LOLOL

The comic writer was an anarchist and the movie was made by a trans woman (Matrix) but yes it is about fascism

5:00 You say there is something about this... Maybe you see what's happening all around you nowadays. I'm a conservative and I use the word "Fascism" only when appropriate. Take another look around you....

I wished this was edited much better. It took away a lot of the sensitivities that this movie had. The reaction was good, but I am left sorely disappointed.
